Dareus fails Bills conditioning test

Apparently, Bills defensive lineman Marcell Dareus can’t run like he drives.

The Pro Bowler, who was arrested in the offseason both for possession of synthetic marijuana and drag racing, landed on the non-football injury list to start training camp because he failed the pre-camp conditioning test.

He needs to focus on getting himself ready,” coach Doug Marrone told reporters regarding Dareus.

While a technicality of sorts, it’s a bad sign for a guy who has faced serious questions about his commitment after the off-field incidents.  With the team in his corner following the arrests, common sense suggests that Dareus would have redoubled his efforts to show gratitude for the loyalty, and to prove that his off-field issues won’t affect his job performance.

Dareus presumably will remain on the NFI list until he can pass the conditioning test, a drama that four years ago marked the beginning of the end for Albert Haynesworth in Washington.

  1. But… what about all of the fans who bought his jersey? I mean, what ever are they going to do now?

  2. This is indeed a stunning development considering a man who weighs in excess of 350 lbs

  3. Yeah that’s pretty bad if you can’t get yourself in tip-top shape to play if you have millions at stake in addition to millions you have already been paid. I don’t have a job that requires me to be physically fit, but I’m making it a point to get into better shape just because it’s a good idea anyhow. I started thinking the other day after teasing a little bit in the Ngata “get-up” post about Ninja Warrior and it made me think, why am I not training for that if I’m willing to call out others to compete at it? Maybe I won’t complete the whole course, but I aim to try next year because I’ve been too lazy about getting into shape and I need a challenge. Plus I found some “secret workout” techniques online by the new Lion James Ihedigbo, so I’m going to steal some of his ideas and see how great his routine really is.

The point is physical fitness is important to be healthy in life in general, so we should all improve our efforts to get into shape and find the motivation and inspiration to do just that, but if you are getting paid millions to be in shape then you better be tip-top or you are a genuine disappointment.

“Go, you chicken fat, go!!!” Isn’t that such a great and catchy tune? Thanks JFK, I got the message a little late, but I’m paying attention and trying now!

  4. First day of camp. Give the boy a break. It’s not like it’s a year round job. MUCH!

  5. Two teens a date were killed down the street last year because of people like Dareus drag racing. They’re not coming back. What will Dareus get? Probably nothing but three hours of driving school and a letter from Roger Goodell. After all, look at Aldon Smith’s joke of sentence (12 days of a suspended jail sentence for weapons and driving drunk). The story isn’t that he’s out of shape. It is why he is out of jail.

  6. Dareus is in a long line of Alabama guys who get to the NFL and become non factors(Richardson,Rolando McClain,Kirkpatrick, etc.)On top of that this dude is as dumb as a broken hammer.

  7. That photo should be the cover of the Madden game. Every year. Get your shtuff together gents.

  8. He’s not doing a very good job of earning his second contract, but from the comments some folks are forgetting this is a pro bowler. And probably not the only defensive tackle to show up to camp a little heavy.

  9. WOW!! After reading some of these comments from so called bills fans,I gotta tip my hat towards the pats fans, they are behind their players thru thick and thin no matter what regarding the comments section on this site(even stuck up 4 their fallen hero Aaron Hernandez until the evidence was overwhelming and even then they didn’t bash him on a national website.Marcell crashes his car speeding and gets caught with fake weed and ppl wanna cut him or call him stupid.yeah he failed the conditioning test but who wouldn’t after the self inflicted crap he has been thru this summer.2 time pro bowler.#go bills .

The cheater fans support cheating and turn a blind eye to it. Why are you surprised they supported a murderer?

  11. Rolltide510- ah finally i find someone with a brain on here.lol his own teams fans calling a 2time pro bowler a bust.a lot of it is jealousy and i get it,he is making more money then we can only hope to dream of and some ppl just love to see it taken away from someone because they are not in the players position.

  12. Hey, if you guys do not want him!! I’ll take him on my team twice on Sunday!! A month from now, he’ll be back to his old ways of crushing QB’s and Halfbacks!!

Do you watch football??? Dareus is one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL. He is dumb as a broken hammer though, I’ll give you that.

  14. Well at least you dont live in seattle….
    #@seattle the gem of canada
#$ seattle fans didnt exist before 2012
#@bunch of dorks and school teachers in green mullets are their bandwagon fans

  15. Having just returned from St. Johns Fisher College and the Bills practice… I sort of feel bad for the man. Everyone was on field one running drills… Dareus was on field 2 with the Kickers… but he was with a trainer down at one end zone running sprints from one side of the endzone the full width of the field and back. Over and over and over.

He brought it on himself… but that was painful to see.. by the second hour of practice Dareus looked like he had gotten caught in a hurricane. Man was drenched….

  16. Relax guys. His drag racing didn’t kill anyone and a 350 pound men ate too much. This certainly isn’t earth shattering news. The guy is an absolute stud so all of this bust talk and Rolando McClain, Albert Haynesworth comparisons are absurd. Dareus is a great player and a great person. This offseason has not shown it, but he is a high character guy. He will be just fine.

  17. It’s okay, though. They’re going to the playoffs, says Doug Whaley, and no one else. :))

  18. Again, he’s a man child!! Love to have him!! By the start of the season he’s going to be fine. By midseason He’ll be a Pro bowl D linemen! As usual

  19. @henryjones20

If this was your son would you be proud of him?
Then again maybe this is how you lead your life.

  20. this ain’t a big deal you see next year is his contract year not this year. So he can pretty much take this year off and then come in next year in the best shape of his career and pronounce how he has grown and ready to be an elite player, at least for the next year

  21. Hey nflinsider711:

When did Dareus ever make a game changing play that you can remember?Typical low information Bills fan!Dude is fat and takes every advantage of being on a good defensive line.

  22. What a “drag” that he is stinking up the “joint”. The fact that he has potential is not outweighed by being a lazy non contributor. Get rid of him now Buffalo. You don’t need the distraction.

  23. That D just lost a third really good player….Byrd, Alonzo, and Dareus. Thats going to be hard to replace. They better have some players step up.

  24. If I had anything to do with this guy’s future in Buffalo I would get him back up and running, showcase him as the pro-bowler he could be, and trade his sorry butt as soon as I could. Stop getting nothing for these troubled assets. Trade this junk during the season. His presence is a distraction and a contagious disease that could do harm to the rest of the team.
I am infuriated with you fools that “”FEEL SORRY For him””, or denote Give him a Break mentality… I think you people are more of a problem to society then he is. Your apathy and/or Sympathy enable these idiots, thereby giving them the fuel they need to re-enforce their self-absorbed and self-indulgent life styles. Personally, any professional athlete that plays in our public paid for stadiums that runs a foul of the law should banned from playing “Period”.
