Johnny Manziel’s jersey the No. 1 seller at NFL’s online store

Johnny Manziel AP

Time will tell if the Browns’ selection of quarterback Johnny Manziel works out, but this much appears true: from a merchandising standpoint, the move has been a home run thus far.

According to the NFL, Manziel’s Cleveland jersey has outsold all other jerseys from April 1 through July 17 at the league’s online store, NFLShop.com.

The sales of Manziel’s jersey are all the more impressive when you consider he wasn’t drafted until May 8. From there, it appears, sales have taken off, much like the air leaking out of a poorly made inflatable swan.

Manziel isn’t the only rookie whose jersey is selling well. Rams defensive end Michael Sam’s jersey has been the sixth-best seller since April 1, with Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater (No. 13), Texans outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney (No. 16) and Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles (No. 18) also selling well.

Here are the 25 best-selling NFL jerseys at the league’s online store from April through mid-July:

1. Browns QB Johnny Manziel.

2. Seahawks QB Russell Wilson.

3. 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick.

4. Broncos QB Peyton Manning.

5. Seahawks CB Richard Sherman.

6. Rams DE Michael Sam.

7. Patriots QB Tom Brady.

8. Saints QB Drew Brees.

9. Packers QB Aaron Rodgers.

10. Seahawks “12th Fan.”

11. Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch.

12. Eagles RB LeSean McCoy.

13. Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater.

14. Vikings RB Adrian Peterson.

15. Cowboys WR Dez Bryant.

16. Texans OLB Jadeveon Clowney.

17. Redskins QB Robert Griffin III.

18. Jaguars QB Blake Bortles.

19. Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill.

20. Seahawks S Earl Thomas.

21. Texans DL J.J. Watt.

22. 49ers ILB Patrick Willis.

23. Panthers QB Cam Newton.

24. Lions WR Calvin Johnson.

25. Colts QB Andrew Luck.

That’s because no one sees Carrs greatness yet he is the best qb in this draft class. He will lead us to a superbowl

Johnny Snickers, Tattoo The Midget, and The Lizardman. In that order.

Wow…the 12th Man is STILL in the top 10?

Most people here would think those bandwagoners would have stopped spending their money by now…

i am pulling for the guy to suceed….hope he does great…..in all reality the odds are stacked against you…after all hundreds of guys play qb in d-1 , and only a few of those get drafted, and even fewer of those get to ever play in the nfl…so why no Go Johnny Football

with that said Go MattSchaub, Go Raiders!

  7. grabgrabgrab says: Jul 21, 2014 3:37 PM

Hopefully that Manziel jersey comes with a money back guarantee when it’s officially known he’s a monumental BUST!

  8. thestrategyexpert says: Jul 21, 2014 3:38 PM

Surprised to see Tannehill up there so high, I would have guessed that Eli Manning or Tony Romo would have edged him out like they did in the past, interesting.

Lotsa room still left on that Seattle bandwagon, apparently.

Do your homework. There have been arrests. BTW, one of the 25 names doesn’t belong. Any guesses?

The fact that Andrew Luck is below Tannehill is hilarious.

If GMs had a real life fantasy draft with every player on the board, Andrew Luck would be their unanimous first overall pick.

This coming from a Broncos fan who watched Luck live last season.

In related news, Ebay recently planned to upgrade its server as a surge of Johnny Manziel jerseys are expected to be listed for sale in January 2015.

  14. kando53 says: Jul 21, 2014 3:45 PM

Take plenty of pics of your friends wearing JM jerseys now, and be ready to start posting them on all the social media sites in a year or two when he goes bust, lol. Better yet make sure to make some YT videos of them spouting off about how great he is going to be, and have those ready as well. :-)

  15. kosarkid says: Jul 21, 2014 3:45 PM

As a Browns fan, I can never understand why people buy the Brown’s QB jersey. You think people would at least wait and see if he’s going to be good and there’s a chance that they’ll still be on the team in 3 years first.

Jerrah GM Jones is gonna put out his own jersey to reclaim the top spot for the Arlington Cowboys.

  22. perkjctc says: Jul 21, 2014 3:58 PM

I can’t believe Michael Sam is on there. Nothing against him but he is far from a lock for a final roster spot. It probably would’ve been wiser to wait until he actually makes the team to drop $100 on his jersey.

  23. granadafan says: Jul 21, 2014 4:07 PM

To be fair, in Seattle, wearing a jerey is considered formal clothing.

  24. therillest says: Jul 21, 2014 4:10 PM

No Jags in the top 25? Yep, they are definitely building the right way….

  25. vincefromtx14 says: Jul 21, 2014 4:12 PM

How is Michael Sam’s jersey selling so well since April 1? The draft wasn’t until May, meaning the jersey was not available until mid-May at least. Please be accurate

  26. rodvmunchiii says: Jul 21, 2014 4:12 PM

You mean the Bucs Mike Evans and Josh McCown didn’t make the list?

  27. leagueobservr says: Jul 21, 2014 4:13 PM

Manziel reminds me of “Broadway” Joe Namath off the field. For Cleveland’s sake, lets just hope he reminds us of Bernie Kosar on it.

  28. midwestconservationist says: Jul 21, 2014 4:19 PM

Who has the $100 or $300 to spend on a singular jerseys (particularly for an unproven one) nowadays? I think the NFL is trying to kill the golden goose with exorbitant prices of jerseys, tix, concessions, etc…

  29. mtheparrothead says: Jul 21, 2014 4:34 PM

And if it had been a Cowboys jersey instead of a Cleveland jersey it would have been astronomically higher!

Dallas is already a marketing machine, leading all NFL franchises in value every year despite lackluster performance.

Combine that with the legend of Johnny Football… China doesn’t have enough workers to make jerseys as fast as that one would sell…

I’ve been a Seahawks fan since 2001. It ticks me off when people talk about Seahawks fans being bandwagoners.

All I know is nobody would have the guts to assume i’m a bandwagoner in person.

  34. samsonight1010 says: Jul 21, 2014 5:11 PM

  35. tennesseeoilers says: Jul 21, 2014 5:15 PM

It’s been my experience that Seattle’s fans may be the most polarized (amongst themselves) in the NFL. Their die-hard fans are the cream of the crop … informed, passionate, and love the game. On the flipside, their bandwagon fans (those who emerged in the past two or three years) are loudly arrogant, embarrassingly uninformed, and an overall pain in the brain.

  39. acromartieismydad says: Jul 21, 2014 6:47 PM

As cool as it is to see my Hawks become mainstream and have 5 of the top 25. Jersey sales dont always translate to worth or success, a guy who hasnt even taken a snap and could implode at any moment is #1.

  40. channer81 says: Jul 21, 2014 7:31 PM

    —————————————————-

Obviously Dolphins fans support their team. As a resident of Indianapolis I have no problem telling you this city is divided big time between Bears fans and Payton Manning fans. They’ve been selling Broncos merchandise all over Indianapolis the second Peyton went there and Manning Broncos jerseys definitely outnumber Luck Colts jerseys here. I’m honestly surprised to see Luck as high as he is on this list.

  42. chasedbyturtles says: Jul 21, 2014 10:01 PM

I’m still ticked I bought that Couch jersey. Lesson learned.

  43. National Fanatic says: Jul 21, 2014 10:45 PM

…if anyone can lead the Browns to a winning record (let alone playoffs) it would have to be a Johnny Manziel type of QB: quick and improvisational (min. 80% of the total offense)

  44. snipedanglecelly13 says: Jul 21, 2014 10:48 PM

Manziel making money for the nfl? Guess you can call him Johnny cash

  45. brownsmakemecrazy says: Jul 21, 2014 10:56 PM

    $ Manziel $

  46. spfripp says: Jul 21, 2014 11:17 PM

We’ll, maybe Dolphins fans are not so bad. I mean after all they are showing support for a QB who still has a lot to prove oppose to Colts fans, who have a proven QB. Time to step it up Colts fans.

  47. labucs says: Jul 22, 2014 6:15 AM

The Michael Sam jersey is a good investment. I bet several people bought it as a collection piece to make a profit from later.

Also, the Browns don’t get all that money from the jerseys. All 32 teams split all jersey revenue equally.

  51. crownofthehelmet says: Jul 22, 2014 12:18 PM

The added some elements to make the A-Rodg jersey more authentic: it comes with dirt stains on the back, and when you put it on you automatically break your collarbone.

  52. dolfan13 says: Jul 22, 2014 12:34 PM

chasedbyturtles stole my thunder, but here goes anyways.

I assumed most Brown’s Fans would just re-purpose their old No. 2 Browns’ jerseys. It’s not like the design has changed in the last 15 years (only the 8 different head coaches). Manziel is the new Couch.
