Pettine: Browns to name starting QB by third preseason game

Johnny Manziel or Brian Hoyer?

According to coach Mike Pettine, we’ll have a winner of the Browns’ QB derby in about a month.

In a Q&A published Monday, Pettine told the Akron Beacon Journal the club will pick a starting quarterback by Cleveland’s August 23 preseason game vs. St. Louis.

“I don’t know if I’ll set a date and kind of paint ourselves into a date, but it will be sooner than the third preseason game,” Pettine told Nate Ulrich of the Beacon Journal.

Teams typically play their starters more in the third exhibition game than in any of the other preseason contests, so if the Browns stick to the plan, the No. 1 quarterback will get an extended stint with the first-team offense in an important dress rehearsal for Cleveland.

Hoyer, a sixth-year pro who attended high school in Cleveland, will try to hold off the rookie Manziel, a first-round pick and the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner.

Go Manziel I hope you win it and show how great of a qb you are and prove Hoyer a 7-6 td:int ratio is really the overrated guy! Go Johnny we support you!

  4. footballguy5 says: Jul 21, 2014 9:08 PM

Hoyer played really well before he got hurt, so there’s no question he should start. Manziel is flashy but lets face it, he’s not going to thrive if he continues to run around and act like this is college ball. NFL defenses will destroy him

Based on Jersey sales, the starting quarterback is….

Johnny must of made of that “not even close” distance in a hurry.

The only was it ISN’T Manziel is if he gets hurt. They won’t bench the kid. The fans would lose their minds.

  16. dalcow4 says: Jul 21, 2014 9:51 PM

Hoyer deserves the early nod. But really– what do you have to lose by starting Manziel? You’re looking at 6-10 at most anyway.

What preseason game do they expect Johnny boy to have his season ending concussion?

  19. glmore says: Jul 21, 2014 9:59 PM

Amazing that no one is talking about Connor Shaw. 24 TDs and only 1 INT last year without a receiver who was 6’6 like Johnny Bieber had last year at A&M.

  20. mrfrostyj says: Jul 21, 2014 9:59 PM

Is it me or does Akron newspapers seem to break more major news about Cleveland sports than Cleveland’s own media does?

  21. bucsorbust says: Jul 21, 2014 10:02 PM

Did I miss something here? I thought the job was Hoyer’s to lose. Man, looks like a rug pull in Cleveland. Just remember…once you take Johnny and start him, you can NEVER go back, for it’s an admission to the world by Cleveland GM and HA that the Browns blew yet another 1st rounder on a QB that didn’t pan out. But if you pick Johnny, you are also telling Hoyer to take a hike. But we all know Johnny is ready to go to the pro-bowl, given his large blocks of time for partying. Yeah, right (wink wink). Here’s pulling for Hoyer!

  22. root4cleveland says: Jul 21, 2014 10:02 PM

    Hoyer has home field advantage.

Johnny can sell jerseys from the bench. I hope he sits and learns how to learn – learns how to prepare.

  23. reeggss says: Jul 21, 2014 10:05 PM

I’m sure this will end well, browns fans need to pray your coaching staff is wise enough to start hoyer

  25. ytownjoe says: Jul 21, 2014 10:11 PM

    Hoyer’s the man.

  26. blacknole08 says: Jul 21, 2014 10:12 PM

I really like Hoyer. He’s got moxie.

But Manziel is the future there. He probably starts day 1.

Would you prefer to drive a flashy new Lamborghini or a slightly dinged 2010 Nissan Altima? The Altima is safe and will get you from A to B, but the Lamborghini offers thrills and maybe some risks.

  29. jayfish6402 says: Jul 21, 2014 10:36 PM

I really thought the Browns would fix up their team this offseason, but they screwed up everything and now they have Johnny Vegas on their team. It doesn’t matter who starts, because either way they’ll have first overall pick next year and draft Jameis Winston

  30. ajgreenhof says: Jul 21, 2014 10:37 PM

    Please be Manziel.

Can’t wait to watch Burfict smear him into the turf.

    If Johnny wins….Cleveland loses.

  32. pftcoachmen says: Jul 21, 2014 11:00 PM

    Rooting for Hoyer.

Not a big Manziel fan. For these reasons :
    1. Not Very Big
    2. Wreckless with his body and the ball.
    3. Not Focused enough.
    4. History of being a problem. (Manning camp, alcohol, etc)
    5. He’s all about himself.

  33. jamaltimore says: Jul 21, 2014 11:01 PM

Who Cares! What we do know is the browns starter will lose a lot more than he wins regardless of who starts the most games this year. Put Modell in the HOF or suffer the losing curse until then.

    Signed Baltimore Browns 2Xsuperbowl champs!!!

Johnny football will be the qb when he knows the playbook or by game 2

  35. thestrategyexpert says: Jul 21, 2014 11:03 PM

It would be really interesting if both looked absolutely dreadful during the first 3 games but Connor Shaw looks like a megastar, will Pettine name him the starter then? 🙂

“Hoyer will be the starting QB at the start of the season”. Coaches are so so full of it. Pettine’s folding up like a paper towel to the pressure to start Manziel. A disaster in the making.

Thumbs up if you think it will be Hoyer and thumbs down if it will be Manziel.

Browns would be stupid to not start Hoyer he actually played decent before he got injured and personally I still dont think JM will make it in the NFL

  48. avenueoffreedom says: Jul 22, 2014 1:53 AM

May the best QB win. I just hope the winner can get this team to at least 8-8. That city deserves it.

  49. jets13 says: Jul 22, 2014 6:13 AM

You gotta have some big ones to bench the #1 selling jersey in the NFL.

  50. natelan says: Jul 22, 2014 6:20 AM

Seasons don’t generally go well for teams who have waited until the 3rd week of preseason to select a starting QB.

Manziel is likely to get popped for cocaine possession well before then anyway.

  51. baddegg says: Jul 22, 2014 6:23 AM

Does anyone really believe Hoyer is going to start?

This will be the most anti-climactic announcement of all time…

  52. coonsqualler says: Jul 22, 2014 7:11 AM

    Just Sayin’…Go Brownies!!

  53. oldcracker says: Jul 22, 2014 7:15 AM

This is Hoyer’s year to earn, while it is Manziel’s year to learn.

    Don’t underestimate Connor Shaw, either.

  58. detroitdawg says: Jul 22, 2014 8:35 AM

I hope hoyer comes out and wins the job. Let johnny sit and learn how to be a pro. If hoyer struggles out of the gate hopefully johnny will be ready to go by time to get ready for the titans after the bye. I’m to the point as a browns fan I could careless which name is on the back of their qb’s jersey I just want one who can win. Go Browns!!!!!

Perhaps you should wait until Manziel takes at least his first NFL snap and goes to his first training camp before anointing anyone the starter.

If this clown had any chance of being taken seriously, it went out the window when he pulled out the Belichick /Jets playbook rhetoric….

  63. dmarado says: Jul 22, 2014 9:55 AM

LOL @ the emotion that Manziel stirs, pretty amazing. I reckon Brian Hoyer will be the starter, and I’m Ok with that. The thing is, though, with the Oline and now (hopefully) running game Cleveland has either guy could probably be at least marginally successful.

  64. coldwater32301 says: Jul 22, 2014 10:08 AM

Wait I thought they already stated that Hoyer was the starter… Trouble… Trouble…Trouble…In the Dog Pound…Indeed…

Does the homeless man get a vote?

  66. mrfrostyj says: Jul 22, 2014 10:55 AM

Only way Manziel starts is if Hoyer gets injured during the pre-season or he looks BETTER in the pre season than he did in college.

Manziel is 21 and to put him in week 1 vs Pittsburghs defense (even as iffy as they are right now) at Pittsburgh’s painted dirt field he better be the second coming of Joe Montana. Hoyer not only played well last season but he used to be a Steeler. On top of that the Browns owner Haslam takes these Steelers games (A team he used to be part owner of) very personally IE loosing to Pittsburgh I’m pretty sure got Pat Shurmur fired, so “win now” has a different meaning in this game. When your boss is as competitive as what Haslam is you don’t start a guy due to “jersey sales” or “draft status” which reportedly is what got Chud fired.

  67. brownoholic says: Jul 22, 2014 11:23 AM

Why do people think Hoyer has already been declared the starter? No, no he hasn’t.

But I hope like hell that he wins the job & keeps it. I’m in Manziel’s corner as long as he’s a Brown, but I say sit & learn the kid. I’ll be in heaven if Hoyer is a healthy starter all season.

If this regime makes decisions based on idiot fans and jersey sales then they deserve to be canned like the last 800 we’ve had since ’99.

  68. buddysguys says: Jul 22, 2014 11:36 AM

  69. logicalvoicesinmyhead says: Jul 22, 2014 12:21 PM

Johnny Snowflake worked five times as hard as Hoyer for the first 30 minutes of practice and then crashed.
