Coughlin thinks Giants will be rejuvenated under new offense

coughlin AP

The oldest coach in the NFL wanted some fresh blood in his offense.

That’s why, Giants coach Tom Coughlin told Josina Anderson on ESPN, he decided to hire Ben McAdoo as offensive coordinator. Coughlin said he thinks McAdoo’s playbook will go a long way toward making Eli Manning look more like he looked in the Giants’ two Super Bowl seasons, and less like he looked during his 27-interception 2013 season.

“I felt like this would be an opportunity for us to rejuvenate those veteran players who were here, Eli for one, to force all of us to learn, again, a new system, a new communication process,” Coughlin said. “For 10 years we had used the same system — we got two Super Bowls and accomplished an awful lot of things offensively — but last year wasn’t one of those years. We turned it over way too much.”

Coughlin was careful not to make it sound like he was taking shots at former offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride. But it’s clear that Coughlin believed a change was in order.

“I just felt like after Kevin retired that this might be the time to make a wholesale change and in so doing reinvigorate the entire system, the coaches that were kept, the veteran players who have been here, to put new energy into their preparation,” Coughlin said.

Rejuvenating the Giants’ offense this year may be Coughlin’s last hope of making a run at his third Super Bowl ring.

Like the Redskins n Cowboys n let’s not forget Chip Kelly’s second year should b even better with the players mastering the up tempo n the many packages the Eagles will throw at opposing defenses. Remember Manning is a turnover machine, so all the changes the giants make will mean nothing if he continues to turn the ball over. And let’s b honest, who on the giant offense scares anyone. If the Eagles can stay reletively healthy, they should blow the division away.

The Giants need an HC that can adapt and improve things. They should consider the one they already have if his changes bring great success. Coughlin is saying it’s on me and watch me get it done. How do you let him go if he makes good on that promise?

  11. brokebackbrees says: Jul 22, 2014 5:50 PM

Rejuvenated Eli Manning. He will only throw 25 interceptions.

Eli is the most overrated player in the game right now.. The best way to rejuvenate him and the entire offense is by having an open qb competition throughout camp. Make him fight for and earn his starting job.

  14. officialgame says: Jul 22, 2014 6:09 PM

Talent, age, and injuries had a lot more to do with the demise of the Giants and frankly I don’t see much of an improvement in those areas. Learning the West Coast offense, terminology, and audibles when you are used to doing things one way will not be easy for Manning. Furthermore the West Coast offense isn’t exactly a cutting edge approach anymore.

  26. TheDPR says: Jul 22, 2014 6:50 PM

Manning could go one of two ways. He could go back to the guy he was before last year – a pretty good quarterback who can win some games if he has talent around him OR he could continue the bad play and move into the twilight of his career by either becoming a backup somewhere or retiring.

It’s really about 50-50 on where he goes from here.

  27. babehuee says: Jul 22, 2014 6:51 PM

Eagles are the most over rated team in the NFL this year. 500 at best. No defense.

    ==============================
    There, fixed it for you.

However, that isn’t the issue here. The issue is his play the other 90% of the time: mediocre. Unless you think numbers like 85-66 (W-L), 229-171 (TD vs, INT) and a QB rating of 81 is special.

  32. olcap says: Jul 22, 2014 7:00 PM

I was expecting him to say there’s not much reason to have hope, so I’m kind of shocked.

  33. victorycruz says: Jul 22, 2014 7:09 PM

Dallas has no defense after losing Ware to trade, and Lee to injury, the Eagles defense besides Kendricks are horrible, and the Redskins have 2 players on defense that worry me in Orapko and Kerrigan.
With that said the only team I’m the slightest bit worried about is the Redskins because their offense on paper looks amazing right now. The Giants amped up their secondary, and got young on the d-line, while the LB’s are still a concern b/c of injury.. I honestly think with no bias at all that this division will come down to the Skins and G-Men.

Hey man, seeing as Buffalo isn’t going to be finishing last in the division for the next few years, you guys can make yourselves at home down there.

Just, you know, be sure to clean up after yourselves.

We always have to remind you guys about that.

  38. justintuckrule says: Jul 22, 2014 7:37 PM

Keep regurgitating numbers that don’t matter to us. The only number we care about is TWO.

Eli doesn’t have video game numbers for one reason and for one reason only. We never ran a video game offense. Our offense was feast or famine and it resulted in two glorious feasts.

You can keep your 27 TD 2 INT qbs. All that tells me is that your QB doesn’t take risks and is more worried about upsetting his stats than shooting for immortal glory. To wit…how on Earth do you become the first team in NFL history to let the Saints beat you on the road in the playoffs??? No guts, no glory offense…that’s how.

    Cheers.

  40. thegronk87 says: Jul 22, 2014 8:26 PM

Eli doesn’t have video game numbers because he doesn’t have the ability to play that style of football. So, because he takes risks, that means he’s a good QB now? That’s a new one – you can argue that every crummy quarterback that throws eli-like interceptions takes risks and therefore should be rewarded with the league MVP. His peers haven’t recognized him as a top 5 QB, so why should the NFL fan base? But But But…eli has two rings, lol.

  41. sbboundgiants says: Jul 22, 2014 9:18 PM

Eagles gave up 394 yards per game last season, 4th worst in the league, and their Defense has gotten worse. You have nothing to look forward except for getting scorched every game and being an NFC East bottom dweller. Sit down

KINDLY STOP THE ELI BASHING. Yes taking risks and having 2 superbowl rings and pro bowl appearances as well as being clutch in playoffs does mean something. I am a statistician and a professor and if you conducted an analysis of variance or a linear regression on Eli’s stats you would be surprised at the independent and dependent variables consisting of awful wide receivers and an awful offensive coach.Give Eli a chance and stop the Eli bashing. Eli bashing does not show intelligence or knowledge, just short sightedness.

Well, of course he says that! Until Eli comes out tossing turkey’s to the Cornerbacks. Hackim nicks gets injured on the 3rd play of the first drive of the first game, go figure! All (3) of the Giant RB’s are injured by game 4. Coughlin has to bring in a RB from the Jaguars Practice squad. Anyone paying attention to history should pick him up on the waiver wire and start ‘m ASAP m!
Prediction- Giants stumble into wildcard spot & decimate the donkeys , permanently etching Payton’s legacy as a regular season czar and a post season jester!
