Three long-time and respected NFL owners have died in recent months, including Lions owner William Clay Ford.

The Lions will honor Ford in 2014 with a uniform patch bearing his initials, via Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com.

Ford’s wife, Martha, now owns the team. Bill Ford, Jr. serves as the team’s vice-chairman.

As noted by Rothstein, Ford bought the team for $4.5 million on November 22, 1963. A date that is far better known for a much different reason.
