Mike McCarthy ready to drop bombs on the Bears

Mike McCarthy AP

It’s no surprise that Packers coach Mike McCarthy wants to lean on air superiority to win the NFC North.

It’s the way he’s going about it that’s surprising.

According to Jeff Alexander of WBAY, McCarthy and his family took a flight in a World War II-era B-17 bomber last week, and the Packers coach had a simple request.

“All right, let’s go bomb Chicago,” McCarthy joked.

McCarthy was able to take the flight with his wife’s grandfather, 96-year-old Bob Schneider, who flew in similar planes during his service.

“This is probably as adventurous as anything I’ve ever done,” McCarthy said.

Now he just has to prepare for the flak from people who lack a sense of humor, and Bears fans.

Packers-Bears is the best rivalry in all of football (pro or college). This year, their final matchup is in week 10. This should be a week 17 game every year!

  19. godofwine330 says: Jul 22, 2014 9:22 AM

I pray the media doesn’t blow this one up like they are blowing up Tony Dungy’s comments on Michael Sam. This was a joke by McCarthy, and not serious in any way. The same way a Cleveland Browns fan or a Baltimore Ravens would say in the same situation would say, “Let go bomb Pittsburgh, or a Buckeye fan would say in the situation, “Let’s go bomb Ann Arbor.”

    Totally Harmless.

Let’s see how mature the media is and hope that they don’t make a mountain out of a molehill in order to fill a slow news story day.

  20. bhuettl says: Jul 22, 2014 9:22 AM

At least Bears fans will understand the humor in a good natured rivalry, much unlike morons to the west who are probably running for their bomb shelters as I write this.

Can’t wait for the PC police to get a hold of this one, and start crying “hate speech”. After all, President Obama is from Chicago.

Sure hope McCarthy isn’t a Republican. If he is, an IRS audit will be coming his way shortly.

    After having pulled our card for years now he wants to blow up Chi-town? I know it’s a joke, I have a sense of humor. I think in the back of his mind he’s worried about daa Bears, so would soon blow it up then deal with it lol I look forward to this years game’s as the tables have finally begun to turn in the north »:~}

  23. adolfoliverbush says: Jul 22, 2014 9:28 AM

He will get plenty of chances to drop some bombs on the Bears when the season starts as long as Rodgers is healthy. The Bears defense is horrendous. One of the worst defenses in the league. They are gonna have some trouble with QB’s like Rodgers and Stafford in the north.

  24. aa1829 says: Jul 22, 2014 9:32 AM

This is about as clear an off hand joke type comment, given the many decades old rivalry between these two teams, not to mention Lovie Smith’s comments about being hired specifically to beat the Packers, that any public figure could make. Prepare to hear the whining of all the PC people in this country now, not to mention the whining of the vikqueen fans as usual. Also, who was in that plane, pretending to be a friend and fan, that couldn’t wait to shoot their mouth off upon landing.

Insecurities will eat you alive Mike. It’s a telling sign that he sees the Bears as a true threat to their dominance of the North & for great reason there should be worry in Packer land. Can’t wait til the first meeting this season between the two teams, should be epic! BEARDOWN!!!!!

Just like the 17 year old girl that was found at the World Cup and them quickly dropped by loreal because she said something like let’s hunt Americans before the Germany game and “social media”(faceless cowards) blew up with rage.

People need to relax in this world. PC is so far out of hand I’m not sure we can bring it back.

I remember when Aaron Rodgers missed half the season and the Packers still won the division. The Packers are clearly the best team in the NFC North, as they’ve proven by winning the division more than 50% of the time (7 times in 12 years). They will add to that total this year.

  49. dfeltz says: Jul 22, 2014 10:46 AM

This BS. How can McCarthy make light of people dying!?!?!? No class.

I’m just kidding. There is not a single person who took this literally. All this tells me that there is no news in the football world. A coach flew in a plane. I’m glad the media was alerted.

  50. ruvelligwebuike says: Jul 22, 2014 10:50 AM

I love the WI/IL rivalry. It’s about good-natured ribbing, beer, good food and better football. Loyalty and tradition. I’m honored that Chicagoans flock to Wisconsin on the weekends to enjoy our tremendously active, outdoor lifestyle and natural beauty. And I love hitting Chicago for some original Malnati’s, Italian beefs, and a very enjoyable time in a great city.

Meanwhile, there is a less exciting version of Northern Ontario to our west that somehow thinks they are superior…let alone in the conversation.

  51. arnoldziffel says: Jul 22, 2014 10:54 AM

Heck, Rex Ryan fires off heavier lines than that before breakfast on a regular basis. It’s a total non-story.

Those in Chi-town who would feign outrage are probably still a little sore about losing a couple of big season-ending games over the last few years.

For those in Minnesota, it’s knowing the Packers are finishing ahead of them year after year – because if you’re not if first place, the view is always the same.

But, those who feel the need to grab at straws … have fun!

  52. kevjones75 says: Jul 22, 2014 10:56 AM

  54. purpleguy says: Jul 22, 2014 11:19 AM

Seriously? News flash for you but the Packers defense was not that great either last season in case you missed it and I’m not sure they’ve made too many improvements there. As for the Bears defense, it’s a time will tell situation, but they certainly addressed it with free agency and the draft, so we shall see.
Also, did you watch the last regular season game between the Bears and Packers last season?? That was a last second TD that Green Bay needed to win.

Bears fan – Love the comments, we have a wonderful rivalry. and while I know it’s very difficult for fans of many teams and divisions to understand, this rivalry has always been about mutual respect. These two teams, in a weird sort of way, are bonded at the hip and they know it. The talk is always along the lines of “We’re gonna kick their butt”, rather than “I hate them and they suck”. I would be personally offended if McCarthy had referenced the Lions or the Seahawks, rather than the Bears. While I wish GB would lose every game they line up for, they have generally been a class act. That is something they should take pride in, coming from the opposing army, in wartime.

  59. gbwisfan says: Jul 22, 2014 11:46 AM

I’m sure he said it with a smile on his face and all in good fun. Bears fans shouldn’t be so offended. It’s football season soon!! Let the hype begin…and that’s what McCarthy is doing. The REAL problem here is the fact that the guy can’t even go on a bomber ride with his family without the media getting up close and personal. Hey journalists…the man’s on vacation let him have his peace. Training camps open in a few days then you can have your time!!!!!

  60. gbwisfan says: Jul 22, 2014 11:51 AM

It was the no.11th defense (no.3 run defense) before our Linebackers were wiped out with injuries, along with a pretty good slot corner.

You replace MD with Micah/or Ha Ha – you basically fixed the back end.

Up front, we’ve just gotta keep Clay and company healthy, we’ve seen what they can do (even with AJ hawk in the line up).

  63. tokyosandblaster says: Jul 22, 2014 12:31 PM

    Come on, meow.

The Packers addressed every situation but inside linebacker and a bears fan is trying to tell us that the bears addressed every position?

Please remember, the bears defense is older than the steelers defense, and nary a spring chicken can be found.

The Bears defense was almost as bad as the Vikings last year, and what did you do? Added a Vikings defender.

    Nice work.

    ————————-

So the Packers are the only one’s who suffered injuries on defense last season??
Bears fans knew going into last season the defense was lacking but they lost key players as well and others seemed to lose a step, so don’t think the Bears didn’t have their share of problems too.

  65. jorgeb420 says: Jul 22, 2014 12:37 PM

I wonder if it’ll be like the bomb that Rodgers threw to Cobb. Conte screw you for messing that up!!! The Bears D was pathetic last year, but so was the pack’s, so please stop making it sound like the pack’s D was head and shoulders above the Bears. The best bomb though was watching the 49ers beat the pack at Lambutt, AGAIN lol. Thanks for that 9ers, that’s why you’re my second favorite team lol!

As far as the remarks go, much worse things have been said about this rivalry. I too would love to see a bomb dropped on green bay, and maybe the SouthSide of Chicago, too many degenerates there lol. Can’t wait for the season and hopefully revenge will be on the Bears minds. Bear Down!!!

All the cheap talk, mostly from lunatic Vikequeens fans, will soon be meaningless. The games will start and the excuses will be made. By Vikings fans, of course. McCarthy was joshing, it isn’t a big deal. I am sure Vikings fans would love to get him fired for cracking a joke, that is the ONLY way they would have a chance to get past the Packers, and most likely not even then. The Packers would just reload, while the Vikings are still trying to load.

  69. wallbanger2 says: Jul 22, 2014 12:58 PM

  70. rho1953 says: Jul 22, 2014 1:00 PM

Hey, the Bears are going to be formidable, especially on offense, but honestly, they don’t have any depth. It will depend on how much they improved their defense and which team gets lucky with injuries. For the Vikings it doesn’t matter, they are a last place team for the next three years no matter what. Their fans should go to the mall and buy some humility and stop running their mouths about how great their team is.

There is no trash talk between the franchises because neither is trash.

Both teams are #1 and #2 in World Championships and #1 and #2 in players in the Hall of Fame. Both teams existed before the NFL.

Lovie Smith put in simple terms what both have known for decades. One cannot be successful without winning against the other.

Their games are always among the top regular season games in television ratings.

He always got the better of us, but he epitomized what makes the relationship between our teams so great.

Love this comment by McCarthy, and I’m sure most Bear fans truly understand that it’s coming from a place of respect and admiration.

  89. deweyaxewound says: Jul 23, 2014 2:36 PM

I LOVE the fact that the league now widely regards the Bears as having one of the worst defenses in the entire league…just keep right on thinking that way.

Never mind that they’ve been a top 5 unit in every major stat for the past decade.

Never mind the fact that the Bears lost almost their entire starting defensive line-up nearly from the get-go, and for almost the entire season, including 3 starting D linemen, 2 starting Linebackers, and 2 starting backs (also losing 3 Pro Bowlers, btw – one at each level — in Melton, Briggs, and Tillman).

And never mind the fact that not only will be the Bears be returning the BEST of those injured players, but that they’ve also upgraded by adding two of the best d-linemen in the game (Lamar Houston was second only to JJ Watt in disruptions/tackles for loss), and Allen’s notched double-digit sacks for last 7 consecutive seasons.

And forget that the Bears took the exact same approach to addressing and rebuilding their d-line this year that did with their o-line last year – with a mixture of elite veteran free agent talent and strategic draft picks.

You can mark my words: the Bears will be right back where they were, and where they belong: having the best defense in the NFC North (at least).

I’m shocked by all of the Bear fans who are just laughing this off. I’m glad you guys have a sense of humor. I know not all have one, just like not all packers fans do, but I have an entirely new respect for you guys. Unlike the d – bags to the west of us. Those idiots just run their mouths for no reason with nothing to back it up. I hate the Bears but I respect the rivalry and fans more than viking fans.

Great rivalry, great fans on both sides…Can’t wait for the season to start.
