Pat Angerer signs with Falcons

When the Falcons lost linebacker Sean Weatherspoon for the season, there were several veteran free agents mentioned as possible signings to shore up the team’s inside linebacker group.

Former Colt Pat Angerer was on that list and he worked out for the team on Tuesday. The workout apparently went well because Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports that Angerer is the newest member of Atlanta’s roster.

Angerer ended the 2013 season on injured reserve after hurting his knee and required microfracture surgery to repair the injury. That kept him from shopping himself as a free agent this spring, but things have obviously progressed well enough to satisfy the Falcons.

Angerer, a second-round pick in 2010, played 54 games and made 39 starts during his time with the Colts. The Falcons have Paul Worrilow, Joplo Bartu and rookie Prince Shembo among the in-house options who will compete with Angerer to fill the starting linebacker jobs come the regular season.

Wow, talk about a no-name crew of LBs for the Birds. I follow the NFL pretty closely and I’ve never even heard of these guys.

Angerer will add some needed depth, but he will not start ahead of Worrilow or Bartu. Although the Falcons defense overall is very young, they have some talent and should take a major step forward this year.

Paul Worrilow, Joplo Bartu, Prince Shembo and now Pat Angerer? I don’t know how good any of those guys are, but they’re names are first team all pro.

It’s too bad the injury bug got him. In 2011 he was awesome. Got something like 145 tackles.

Falcons will like Angerer. He was a leader on the field and fired up the team. He worked his way up from special teams to be a starting LB.

Headline composers are praying for this one:
Falcons Fight! Prince in Royal Rage; Angerer Even Angrier!

If u like Paul Worrilow you will like this kid, Pat Angerer he has a nose for the ball ball and knows how to make plays in the back field but also in coverage I give pat an A+ in his all around play and will be a good replacement for LOLB Sean Weatherspoon this season

Great addition to this D. Paul and Pat are like twins on the field. Falcons D will make a giant leap from their previous rank. Bulked up the line and have the two best young CB’s in the league in Alford and Trufant. Good looks front office

I heard the Colts are angrier at the Falcons because they signed Pat Angerer

The Falcons will be lucky to win 4 games this year. Their defense is young and talentless. Bad combo.

Two sides of the coin w/ Pat.

Early in his career he was a spark-plug fan favorite draft find. A few injuries later and he would just evaporate when he got on the field.

Hope he rebounds his career, but had a shocking fall off over the last few years.

@bccooper99 … have you watched him play recently?

    Just curious.

    That should make him happierer.

Angerer was a good player 2 years ago. If he can be healthy (unlikely) he will be a nice contributor for the Falcons.

dude should have been a jet on basis of name alone.

I wonder if his ancestors had a habit of angering other folks?

  19. slick50ks says: Jul 22, 2014 7:25 PM

The Falcons defense continues to be absolutely horrible.

Don’t make me Angerer. You wouldn’t like me when I’m Angerer-er. er.

  21. bornahawker says: Jul 22, 2014 10:49 PM

Pat did have injuries that cost him his job in INDY. If he can stay healthy expect a Sean Lee type.

@bassplucker – Obviously, you don’t follow the NFL enough if you’ve never heard of them.

@slick50ks – If you haven’t gone to any practices to say that how would you know? Yea, we were bad last year. Actually, we were horrible. Nothing has really changed scheme wise. The difference is that we now have the personnel to run everything Nolan has wanted to in the last 2 years. To be honest, I credit Mike Nolan for the 49ers defense we see today.
