Jets agree to terms with Jason Babin

AP

The Jets are adding a veteran pass rusher to Rex Ryan’s defense.

Jason Babin, the 34-year-old defensive end who visited the Jets this week, has agreed to terms. Babin’s agents announced the deal on Twitter.

Babin started all 16 games for the Jaguars last year and recorded 7.5 sacks. That was his highest total since 2011, when he had a phenomenal season in Philadelphia and finished with 18 sacks for the Eagles.

Babin was a first-round draft pick of the Texans in 2004 and has also played for the Seahawks, Chiefs and Titans. Although he’s not the All-Pro caliber player he was a few years ago, he’ll provide some solid depth as a situational pass rusher for the Jets.

  1. Great addition by the jets. But do they have an offense that can win the division? I think not

  2. This should be very interesting season for the Defense Squad.. I can’t wait to see how Mo, Richardson, Harrison, Ellis, Couple, Barnes, Babin, Harris and Davis do better this year.. It gonna be epic dog fight this year!!!

  3. i like this signing. every time i’ve seen him play he’s always chasing the qb around like a maniac.

  4. I wonder why he never signed with Detroit???? Jim Washburn is here and he had his best season when they were both with the Eagles. Also he went to Western University. Plus he’s better than Jason Jones and Darryl Tapp. Just makes too much sense to me. Must be a MONEY thing….

Yeah as in Detroit was unwilling to pay the man what he deserves even though what he deserves is very little, greedy. That’s why the Lions will never win anything and have never won anything, not willing to go that extra 10% that other teams are (also your team, like mine, can’t draft worth a lick).

  6. incredible depth move, rex will have some fun with babin as a 4-3 end rushing the passer, maybe some 3-4 olb as well. going to be a monster season for this dline

  7. No conerbacks, Safties are box players, no QB or Wideouts.

Yea it will be an Epic year all right. Epic just not a playoff team. Rex builds the D neglects the offense. Someone tell him you need offense in this league to win.

He Did Crap with Philly, he had is best and only good year with Tennessee.

  9. I don’t know what you’re seeing but the jets are going to be a problem next year.

Improved running game, and with the addition of Calvin Pryor on the back end to go with a nasty nasty nasty front 7 good luck running on them.

The only concern I have is the Quarterback, but Vick has shown time and time again not to count him out when everyone already does.

Corner back is a concern but again when you have a good front 7 you can cheat a bit at the CB position.

Still though this is going to be a very good team, and this is coming from a Ravens fan (so I remember having a dominant defense to go with a power run game and no QB).

  10. Was wondering why he didnt catch on faster after his release. Apparently any team needing a DE doesn’t feel like he’s an upgrade.
Won’t lie though, was hoping the Bills would’ve signed him and maybe slide Lawson to OLB to make up for Kiko’s loss. Good depth player but don’t see him as difference maker.

  11. Team didn’t need front four help. Babin cannot play OLB .

CB & Saftey suspect in coverage, If you believe otherwisw your kidding yourself. Good luck in 5 wide coverage espically in the slot. Got killed in that defense will be worse this year without Cromartie.

Both QB’s suck and are injury prone, No Wideouts and trouble in pass protection.

It’s great running the Ball if your Seattle with a good QB and servicable WR’s.

3rd place in the division. Defense may win championships but offesne gets you to the playoffs.

He had 18 sacks in a season with Philly. Didn’t so much against the run, but if they use him strictly for pass rush he’ll do ok.

  13. He had the label of a malcontent when the Jags picked him up off waivers.

He has been nothing but a class act and good locker room influence in Jacksonville. He took a pay cut in an attempt to stay in Jacksonville, but in the end it was a numbers game and Jacksonville has too many young players at his position which need to see the field.

He has a no nonsense type of personality. He’s not afraid to tell someone that they look or are acting like an idiot… which might rub some locker rooms the wrong way.

  14. While the Jets D has a chance to be very good, though DB’s are quite suspect, I don’t see enough improvement in the O to make the team legit in the NFL of 2014. Babin is a JAG.

  15. Not a jets fan and think this was a nice sign for depth. Seems like a gamble worth taking to me.

  16. Gotta give this guy credit… it looked like he was finished when the Jags picked him up, but he turned in a nice comeback season down there. Odds of him repeating that at 34 yrs old are slim, but who knows?

  17. So 31 other teams had all offseason to sign this “GREAT” pass rusher, they have had him in for looks and workouts. Nobody was interested. I hardly think this was some steal for a team struggling for relevance again. Just another signing…

  18. Jets fans listen to me. This guy is a cancer on the team. Totally overrated. There is a reason this jerk was on 4 teams in 4 years. Why do you think he has been out there? Because not one other team wants this baggage.

  19. You must respect what Rex is doing on defense. Should keep them in most games. You just can’t help but think about the offense and how bad it was last year and they STILL won 8 games.

Say what you want but addition of Vick, C Johnson and Decker simply must equal 1-2 more wins this season.

  20. Babin was loved here in Jax. Hard worker, great locker room guy, leader on the field, played all 16 games. Great attitude, loved the area and community (he will retire here), he still has some gas in the tank!!!

The guy is a 4-3 defensive end playing in the 3-4.

Sounds like yet another dumb move by the JESTS.

    ——

Rex has always played to his personnel. Jets D-line is so good it was expected that they would play more 4-3, even if listed as a 3-4.

  22. If it was 2010, and championships were won on paper only, this Jets team sure would have a shot!

  23. The Jets run a lot of 4-3 and nickel(especially on passing downs). There will be a lot of opportunities for Babin to rush the QB. On every other down Pace will be in there to squash the run.

  24. Lots of people saying this is not a great move. Dude has always had
the ability to get to the QB. If Calvin Pace can get 10 sacks in Rex’s D… then so can Babin.
