Vikings waive DE Spencer Nealy, sign TE Michael Higgins

The Vikings have parted ways with suspended defensive end Spencer Nealy, waiving him on Wednesday, the club said.

The 24-year-old Nealy was banned four games earlier this month for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. Should Nealy sign elsewhere, he could take part in training camp and the preseason before serving his suspension, which can end no earlier than September 29.

According to a statement released through the NFLPA, Nealy’s suspension stemmed from a banned stimulant in a supplement.

To fill Nealy’s roster spot, the Vikings signed tight end Michael Higgins, a Nebraska-Omaha product who was on the Saints’ practice squad a season ago and played four regular season games for New Orleans from 2011 through 2012.

  1. The historic Minnesota Vikings never dissapoint.

Year after year, we make amazing free agency signings, get in their prime players for solid contracts.

We have won the past 3 drafts undoubtedly, getting future building blocks for players to build around.

This season, we will win at least 12 games and take the division easily.

There’s absolutely no reason to be negative about this team, the Super Bowl rings will come.

    We.
    Will.
    Change.
    The.
    Game.

The Zimmer Trophy will be the real “Lombardi trophy” in 20 years.

Your children’s children will be talking about the 2014 Minnesota Vikings.

  2. Spencer would easily be a key cog to the horrible packer defense!!! Would easily be a captain and be in their ring of honor in no time!!!

  3. Dude, after you get waived by the Vikes the only place left is Oakland. Might be time to think about another career.

  4. Vikings always sign other teams cast offs. They will finish 15th in the NFC. Only ahead of the pitiful Atlanta Falcons.

  5. Given that Nealy is now a “former Viking” and also suspended for PEDs…

I would imagine he’ll be a Seattle Seahawk by morning.

  6. So….. let me get this straight.

    This Michael Higgins fellow.

    From Nebraska – Omaha.

He’s a future Hall of Famer?

  7. Wow that was prosinski #42 tacking or mistackling in that photo. Jags fans would know how the play ended just with that photo.

  8. After all the vikings suspended for performance enhancing drugs, steroid maskers, and street drugs humanoids should be careful throwing the World Champion Seahawk name around.

Higgens on the other hand, coming from Nebraska Omaha, just might be their #3 TE with a chance to move up. (#1 John Carlson 344 yards, #2 Kyle Rudolph 313 yards). His tackling will have to be good though.

  9. Higgins is too good a player and too nice a guy to be stuck on the miserable, pathetic Vikings. Hopefully they don’t realize that and send him packing so he can join a real team for the regular season.

  10. Someday they’ll figure out what they really want/need. Of course, it will be after they’ve once again missed the playoffs.

  11. If our practice squad in Minnesota doesn’t want him, you know he has NO CHANCE in the NFL.

Since you don’t seem to know much, Carlson is probably retired from football because of concussions.

  13. Carlson is on the Arizona Cardinals. Look for Rudolph to have a break out season because of Norv Turner’s offense.

  14. Your children’s children will be talking about the 2014 Minnesota Vikings.

    …and laughing.

  15. Go ahead and make fun of the 2014 Vikings you packer fans…The 2014 Vikings are going from worst to 1st ! We finally have a quality and respected coaching staff with lots of young players. Your laughfter will quickly turn to tears. SKOL 2014 !!!
