Aldon Smith says he’s remained sober, expects to meet with Goodell soon

With word of Ravens running back Ray Rice’s two-game suspension being announced on Thursday, we may be drawing closer to learning what kind of discipline the league has in store for 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith.

Smith pleaded no contest to three weapons charges and a DUI this offseason and reports were that he’d meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell soon to discuss his situation. On Thursday, Smith confirmed, via Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, that he expects to have a meeting with Goodell soon but that no date has been set yet.

Barrows also reports that Smith said he has remained sober since checking into a rehab facility after being arrested for DUI last September. Smith missed five games while in rehab, something Goodell said could be a factor in any penalty that is ultimately handed down.

The sobriety may also help persuade Goodell to opt for lesser discipline, but Smith has racked up enough negatives that it would be surprising if he’s in the 49ers lineup for the first few weeks of the regular season.

Should have just knocked your girlfriend out. Would’ve got the slap on the wrist and dont do it again punishment. And he plead not guilty. WTF!?!? Dude was kicking her to see if she moved or not. 2 games, that definitely sets the standard. Aldon might be gone a year.

Aldon Smith should be in jail along with Ray Rice. I don’t give a darn about that football talent. They are menaces right up there with Aaron Hernandez.

  3. scoops1 says: Jul 24, 2014 3:45 PM

He remains sober for now…but he will be drunk when he meets Goodell….

  4. bassplucker says: Jul 24, 2014 3:45 PM

I’ll be shocked if he misses any more than the first two games. More likely Goodell considers “time served” as sufficient and he’s in the starting lineup on opening day.

  5. trailbreaker77 says: Jul 24, 2014 3:46 PM

Just a fine he’s already missed 5 games for this last year.

  6. percyscoredasmuchasdenver says: Jul 24, 2014 3:47 PM

Deserves a year suspended from the league. Hopefully, the commish does the right thing here.

  8. danflores93 says: Jul 24, 2014 3:52 PM

I think voluntarily taking himself out of 5 games to get help last year is gonna make a big difference. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s doesn’t miss a single one this season.

  9. johndaly69 says: Jul 24, 2014 3:55 PM

Not only should Smith be in jail for at least a year, but his sweet lil buddy Chris Culliver should be in there with him. If they both get off with no suspensions you know things are rigged.

  10. jda129 says: Jul 24, 2014 3:56 PM

He’s been sober since Sept 2013? Good for him if that’s true, but I’m slightly skeptical that is entirely true. 5 weeks of rehab seems like a bandaid. What continued outpatient treatment or measures has he taken to maintain his sobriety? I only question because if this is not behind him he remains a hazard to himself and the public should he get drunk and behind the wheel of a car again.

  11. dacktle49 says: Jul 24, 2014 3:56 PM

He will be out for 1 preseason game..

  12. bellereve1000 says: Jul 24, 2014 3:56 PM

I think it should be a year suspension amd then death by hanging in Union Square.

    Comments from Jim Hairball.

“It’s not a big deal, it’s just part of the process,” Harbaugh said, via ESPN. “There are consequences when you make a mistake like that. I stand behind Aldon. He’s a heck of a guy. He’s done everything right since. He makes a mistake, alright? He’s going to have to pay a consequence. I think that’s good for kids to understand it works that way. That’s how it works, that’s how it should be

  14. bucsorbust says: Jul 24, 2014 4:04 PM

Take a cough drop with codeine in it? Get 4 games and a month’s pay. Hustle weapons, cocaine, weed, drive through the city out of your skull, knock out some woman and drag her around for half the night. You get 2 games, $700K, and a contract extension.

This must be the “tough love” NFL system that’s really reverse psychology.

  15. bucsorbust says: Jul 24, 2014 4:06 PM

Not now on all this discipline stuff okay? Roger Goodell’s in full campaign mode for a team in London in 10 years.

It was reported that he was drunk when he said he had a bomb at the airport. Why isn’t anyone picking up on that?

How much time off does Marshawn Lynch deserve for his gun and DUI charges? Just curious.

“It was reported that he was drunk when he said he had a bomb at the airport. Why isn’t anyone picking up on that?”…

Because Niner fans choose to ignore facts that reflect negatively against them. They will defend/support a drunken criminal if he’s on their team, but be the first to lynch mob a player for a post-game rant if he’s not.

  25. brettfavresmidget says: Jul 24, 2014 4:40 PM

He’s been removed from the All-Irsay team.

    Current squad:
    Justin Blackmon
    Mike Goodson
    Josh Gordon

  26. joey49er says: Jul 24, 2014 4:41 PM

Well if they dropped the charges on the supposed bomb threat! Are u really that ignorant to think they would of not charged him for disorderly if he was DRUNK??????daaaaaaaaaaa

  27. drudema says: Jul 24, 2014 4:48 PM

He’s probably been as sober as Blackman.

  28. higheriqthanyou says: Jul 24, 2014 4:51 PM

You have to pick your offense…

Knocking our your fiance and dragging her by the hair from the elevator, and then kicking her to make sure she’s not faking it…

Driving out of your mind drunk, hustle weapons, make bomb threats also while drunk…

Those are “mistakes” by “good people”.

But take a fertility pill prescribed by a doctor and boy oh boy, you’re missing serious time!

  29. 6superbowls says: Jul 24, 2014 4:58 PM

Plays for a Harbaugh. Roger will give him 2 games.

  30. dirtydrew says: Jul 24, 2014 5:00 PM

If the league won’t suspend Jim Irsay, then it has no business suspending Aldon Smith. It’s not like he knocked his wife out. I mean, Richard Sherman tested positive for Adderall, and missed zero games. Time for some consistency Goodell.

  31. decon49 says: Jul 24, 2014 5:15 PM

Dirty drew not according to Seattle fans. The nfl uses a drug testing company that leaves open urine sample cups that have been used already laying around…Isn’t that how every drug testing place is? I know I’ve never seen one like that before

  32. RegisHawk says: Jul 24, 2014 5:23 PM

Just remember when Irsay gets even less of a penalty than Rice and Smith that you wanted it that way.

  33. sonoco says: Jul 24, 2014 5:28 PM

A witness THOUGHT Aldon Smith was intoxicated and reported it to LAX Police but no sobriety test was performed. I’m sure that’s convict him in this forum.

    oh the irony of things…

  35. 1rockyracoon says: Jul 24, 2014 5:48 PM

We can take him at his word. It’s not like he appeared intoxicated and mentioned having a bomb at an airport.

  36. denverdude7 says: Jul 24, 2014 5:57 PM

    8 game suspension minimum.

After all, this is so much worse than punching a woman unconscious and dragging her down a hallway by her hair.

  37. troy43mvp says: Jul 24, 2014 6:22 PM

Aldon should have met with Rog today….apparently he is in a good mood. Ain’t that right Ray Ray?

  38. worldbefree78 says: Jul 24, 2014 8:10 PM

Glad he’s been sober since the morning he passed out behind the wheel and crashed his car into the dentist’s tree. But there is no way you can cure an addiction in five weeks.

  42. chawkup says: Jul 24, 2014 11:15 PM

I’ll take my Niner meat at full strength, thank you. And we will continue to win Super Bowls while they lose NFC Championships. No other way. Above reproach, baby.

It’s interesting to see the kind of comments here and the judgement.

What are you doing to try to help this kid and other players?

I’ll tell you what I’ve done. I’ve talked to a substance abuse counselor who is very good at what he does and who has had the same issues, and specializes in sober coaching and sober companionship(spending days with players to keep them from relapsing). He is reaching out to Aldon’s Agent and the 49ers organization to offer his services to keep Aldon, and other players in the same situation, from ruining their lives.

He is also reaching out to Drew Rosenhaus to offer his services with Josh Gordon and has already talked to people close to Titus Young to do the same.

If you’re going to judge, at least substantiate your “all knowing” opinions with a solution, and not just criticizing and condemning these guys.
