Evan Mathis still wants a new deal, but comes to camp

Evan Mathis AP

Evan Mathis wants a new contract, and likely deserves one.

But he won’t be holding out to get one.

According to Tim McManus of PhillyMag.com, Mathis has already reported to Eagles camp, after considering a holdout.

Mathis is set to make $5.15 million this year, coming off an All-Pro season. But he has three years left on his contract, which keeps him from having too much leverage in the situation.

The Eagles have locked up their entire offensive line for the near future, but will be without tackle Lane Johnson for the first four games, making Mathis’ presence even more important.

Play out your contract, if not for football try getting a job that will pay you that type of money

If this whole football thing doesn’t work out for him he can always fall back on playing Ogre in a Revenge of the Nerds sequel.

I’ve never seen a more deserving face for a contract extension.

He could have easily used Lane Johnson’s suspension as leverage for a new deal…..which would have left the Birds with two holes in one of the best offensive lines in football…..but he didn’t, and for that, I respect him even more.

It’s a shame. I remember how excited he was two years ago about his $25 million contract and now he’s saying it’s not enough. Excellent player but he has no right asking for more money now.

5.15 million isn’t exactly chump change from where I’m sitting.

    Just sayin’

Journeyman lineman gets rewarded with a 5 year deal near the end of his career, and he wants more 2 years into it.

    I hate NFL players entitlement.

If you wanted more, you should have requested it in your contract. Youre the one that signed it. If you played below average, the Eagles couldnt hold out to pay you less.

They got him off the journeymen scrap heap a few yrs ago he should be thrilled with what he’s getting (ingrate)
