Raiders will cut Kevin Burnett

Ryan Fitzpatrick, Kevin Burnett AP

The Raiders won’t have cornerback D.J. Hayden in the lineup for a while after foot surgery and they won’t have linebacker Kevin Burnett in the lineup at all.

Multiple reports from Raiders beat writers have the team parting ways with the veteran linebacker. Burnett missed a portion of the team’s spring work because of an ankle injury and Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports that he was never medically cleared to participate in practices this summer.

The Raiders signed Burnett to a two-year, $5.25 million deal before last season and Burnett started all 16 games for the team last year. He didn’t play particularly well and the Raiders will go with either Sio Moore or Miles Burris across from rookie Khalil Mack this season.

Burnett was a second-round pick in Dallas in 2005 and has played for the Chargers and Dolphins in addition to the Cowboys and Raiders. If he’s healthy, he could get a look from a team in need of an experienced hand on defense later this summer or during the season.

When you can’t make the Raiders roster, you know your NFL career is finished.

@Humbolt Its not that dummy. Could have made the roster with ease. He just wasnt cleared medically and was still being a baby about Oakland drafting Khalil Mack.

Following his release, Burnett was quoted as saying “Whew!”

Chargers Fan here: Kevin Burnett was one of my favorite linebackers in the league. The only reason why he’s not in SD is because he got a big time raise in Miami.

…and I watched two Raider games last year (vs. San Diego) and Kevin Burnett was a BEAST!

Dallas should sign him up, as he is an upgrade over Sean Lee.

He’s alright, certainly better than the invisible man, Mante Teo.

The article said Burnett didn’t play well last season, NOT TRUE. He had a good season. Some of these writer will write anything and need to be called out. I doubt he watched 1 Raider game.

Burnett has always quietly been a good player. Doesn’t grab headlines, but makes plays. Kind of a Donnie Edwards type. He’ll find work.

He was cut because of his bad attitude ever since the Raiders took Mack .. I liked Burnett, I thought he brought veteran leadership last year as well as solid play.. but we need guys that work for the best interest of the team not guys who cry because they aren’t starters anymore.

What would it hurt to take a look at Vince Young….. Don’t let this guy retire without bringing him in for a tryout….
(NFL Rookie of the Year, 2 Pro Bowls, Playoff experience and Mobility). Vince has a career winning record of 31-19…
He can help this team…even if it’s only to upgrade the team’s quarterback pool…

Kevin Burnett is much to young for the Raiders roster…….CHOO CHOO

Vince Young never should have made any pro bowls.. His career high of 2546 passing yards in a season is pathetic even for a running QB, He has thrown more INTs than TDs in 4 of his 6 seasons.. His career QB Rating is 74.4 .. Vince Young cant help any team.

Atlanta, New York Giants, Buffalo, or any team that need a weak side or middle linebacker should sign Burnett. The guy can play.

Thumbs up for clearing room for “Andre Johnson”

It is a fact that Vince Young can win games in the NFL…. All the awards Vince won in college and pro… all of a sudden he forgot how to play the game he loves…. BULL!!!!!!!

Kevin Burnett would be a starting LB in sunny San Diego.

Vince stop posting about yourself, we know your bored because its football season and you have nothing to do. but you stuck and need to go away.

  20. pooflingingmonkey says: Jul 24, 2014 9:52 PM

If signed, Vince Young would indeed be the best Quarterback on the Joakland Faiders roster.

  21. raiderufan says: Jul 25, 2014 7:29 AM

2012 Dolphins: 80 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 5 passes defended…according to you guys he was a solid signing after grading out top 4 in 4-3 OLB’s.

    2013 Raiders: 83 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 1 int, 3 FF and 4 passes defended….wasn’t terribly affective…

    Huh?

He is better than the two stiffs San Diego just cut at LB. And he was a lot better last year than Philip Wheeler, who took his job in Miami last season. But keep yapping, slumb0lt. Your mindless buffoonery never fails to amuse us.
