Report: Jordy Nelson’s looking for $10 million a year

Jordy Nelson Charity Softball AP

Jordy Nelson is definitely a wide receiver.

And he wants to get paid like one of the best.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com, a source familiar with the negotiations said Nelson wants a deal “worth at least $10 million per season.”

Nelson’s currently working on the final year of the three-year, $12.6 million deal he signed in 2011, and his $4.2 million per season average is 34th among all receivers.

And since he signed that deal early during the 2011 season, he’s averaged 67 catches, 1,107 yards and 10 touchdowns per season.

With Roddy White cashing in with the Falcons today, the bar was raised again for Nelson, who just turned 29 years old.

The Packers would like to keep Nelson and Randall Cobb (who is also up for free agency after this season), but they might find themselves in a spot where they can afford one or the other, but not both.

Jordy Nelson is nothing more than a product of Aaron Rodgers.

If Ted Thompson pays him $10 million a year he’s a fool.

Look at his production with Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien.

He’s nothing more than a possession #2 WR in most offenses.

  3. olyniner says: Jul 24, 2014 2:35 PM

Maybe his car will run out of gas and phone dies like Jamal Charles.

The league should test Jordy Nelson to determine what drug he is taking.

Easily the most underrated WR, if not player, in the NFL.

Indeed. Just like Greg Jennings, right??? ;-)

You mean his agent wants $10 million for him. Agents and lawyers have ruined this league.

  9. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 24, 2014 2:42 PM

Thank God they didn’t re-sign Jennings and waste the money on him. Nelson is more athletic, stronger and more complete WR than Jennings ever was. Worth every penny regardless of what the village idiot thinks.

  10. jh500 says: Jul 24, 2014 2:42 PM

    give him the veterans minimum.

  11. seapoeschl says: Jul 24, 2014 2:42 PM

  12. newdayintampabay says: Jul 24, 2014 2:42 PM

Hes definitely not a product of A Rod. Jordy was the reason Josh Freeman even got drafted because of how well he made him look in college. Losing jennings and jones is one thing but jordy is a keeper

  13. robert831 says: Jul 24, 2014 2:43 PM

Pay the man! He’s been vastly underpaid and by far their best receiver for a few years. This guy is a stud, and I’m a Vikings fan.

  14. blacknole08 says: Jul 24, 2014 2:43 PM

He’s better than Eric Decker, that’s for sure.

    @pftpoet
Jordy is better than all your garbage recievers including coradelle Patterson, and when Flynn and Tolzien played we fed the ball to Lacy, you know the guy that destroyed your pathetic defense. Do us all a favor and shut up until those POS Vikings actually do something worth talking about.

    @ thepftpoet,
You’re just hoping the Packers let him go to FA so your beloved Vikings can sign him just like Jennings. You might get that chance as I don’t see Ted paying him that much. He’ll wait out the season and see how the stable of receivers in training camp develop. We have the luxury of having 8 good receivers in camp and they can’t keep more than 5.

  20. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 24, 2014 2:49 PM

Look at his numbers with Tolzien and Flynn. LMAO Look at any great WR’s numbers with garbage backups throwing to them.

Brandon Marshall is a possession WR as evidenced by his low YPC. Jordy Nelson stretches the field as evidenced by his YPC and many catches over 20+ yards over his career. In fact, his YPC last year was better than Greg Jennings over the last 3 seasons.

  21. kylerichards76 says: Jul 24, 2014 2:50 PM

If he can manage to get injured and lose a little productivity this year, hes a lock to be a Viking the next 5 years for $55MM.

  22. whatjusthapped says: Jul 24, 2014 2:51 PM

Nelson has been mentioned by the so called “football experts” or talking heads as one of the most underrated players in the NFL.

Just look at the Superbowl game or playoffs in 2010, he is easily the MVP of the team in that stretch.

GB will pay him because he is worth it, not because his sister takes to twitter to tell us so. When the Packers don’t want someone, they simply don’t pay them and they end up going over to the last place Vikings for more money, less production and a last place finish.

  23. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 24, 2014 2:51 PM

He’s no Brandon Marshall. Thank goodness. Marshall is a slower possession type WR who is a product of being targeted all the time because his QB never goes through his reads. Just like in Denver when he was with Cutler. When he wasn’t with Cutler and was in Miami, his padded stats suffered.

I’d take Nelson and his versatility and hands over Marshall any day of the week. He’d put up even better numbers than Marshall if you were to swap out Marshall for Nelson and make Cutler lock onto him every play.

  24. dryzzt23 says: Jul 24, 2014 2:57 PM

White WRs deserve to get “paid” just like black players do.
Don’t rip the man for trying to get a salary that he has EARNED on the field…not b/c of his “potential” or “personality”.

  25. truenorth84 says: Jul 24, 2014 2:57 PM

Man all that money tied up in Erin Rodgers and Fabio 52 , then all the $$$ need for Jordy makes you wonder if they can afford anyone else???Good thing Peppers is well past his prime and couldn’t demand as much as someone in their 20’s. GB has had a decent run, but this might be one of their last shots before a steady decline… Hello 70’s and 80’s type seasons, stay a while!

  26. fatsolio says: Jul 24, 2014 2:59 PM

He’s not worth 10 mil a year. Good luck there Jordy. Jeez.

  27. fwippel says: Jul 24, 2014 3:00 PM

Tough call between Nelson and Cobb, and I’m honestly not sure who’s going to have the better future.

No question that as of right now, Nelson is the better WR, but Cobb likely has more productive years ahead of him than Nelson does, and I’m not sure we’ve seen Cobb reach his potential yet.

  28. joeyashwi says: Jul 24, 2014 3:01 PM

Jordy is a great player. Jordy is not a $10 million a year player. As a Packer fan, I would love to see Nelson stay but at a more affordable level, say four years/$30M. I would maybe even throw in a fifth year but no way do I want to see that much money tied up in one WR on this team.

  29. wisconsinhillfolk says: Jul 24, 2014 3:01 PM

No way he deserves more than $4 million a season. There are half – a – dozen receivers in the same division alone better him. Scrub.

  30. mavajo says: Jul 24, 2014 3:01 PM

Love Nelson, man. Guy is awesome. Been one of my favorite Packers for years.

But you can’t pay him $10M in a salary capped league. The 2014 NFL salary cap is $133M. So Nelson would account for 8% of your team’s salary cap. That’s just not feasible. Even if Nelson was a transcendent talent ala Calvin Johnson, locking up ~10% of your team’s salary cap in a receiver is just not something that intelligent organizations do.

So if Nelson really is looking for $10M per year…ah well. It was great having him while he was here and I wish him the best.

  31. vikesfan says: Jul 24, 2014 3:01 PM

  33. emoney826 says: Jul 24, 2014 3:04 PM

Before Jennings became a free agent and signed with minnesota, viking fans thought he was garbage too. So you can’t take their opinions serious. Especially the biggest viking troll on here..thepftpoet. I’ve never heard anything logical from him. He says the opposite to get a rise out of packer fans. He makes the dumbest packer fans sound smart. I’d be embarrassed to have a follower like him represent my team on this forum.

  34. cheeseisfattening says: Jul 24, 2014 3:06 PM

LOL, please let the Packer commit 10 mil a year to Jordy Nelson!

  35. bigd9484 says: Jul 24, 2014 3:10 PM

Well, see you somewhere else next year Jordy. TT doesn’t make a habit of giving long term 10mil/season to 30 year olds. You might get lucky and get a franchise tag for 1 more year, taking you to 31 at which point you would definitely be walking. Give 8 per year to Cobb for 5, and keep drafting WR’s. Anyone who gives Nelson (who is admittedly very good) 10/year is NUTS. Watch especially how much Decker improves the NYJ, that will determine your fate. Take 6-7/year to play for a contender, or take 10-11/year to go to a doormat. Pretty much the options for all FA.

  36. drs12522 says: Jul 24, 2014 3:11 PM

This is the problem with paying Sam Shields $9 mil. a year. They paid him to keep him, but it impacts every signing the Packers will try to make. If Shields is worth $9 mil. a year, then Jordy and Cobb are worth $10 mil. a year. They probably won’t keep both though. Stay healthy guys! One way or another, the money is coming.

  37. thebeast431 says: Jul 24, 2014 3:16 PM

Green Bay will have plenty of cap space (Over 13$ million this year alone) for both players and a bunch of dead money coming off next year (Williams 8.25$/Raji 4$). Plus new tv deal money will increase the hard cap, it wont be an issue.

  38. northpackalacky says: Jul 24, 2014 3:17 PM

I like Jordy, but he’s not worth $10 million per year. First, they’ve got to pay Randall Cobb. He’s worth more. Then pay Jordy after that.

  39. largent80100 says: Jul 24, 2014 3:21 PM

If so, let him hit free agency. I consider Nelson a second-tier receiver but 10 million is top receiver money now, unless the market inflation makes it a bargain.

I wonder what’s the best for Green Bay, let both Nelson and Cobb walk or sign one of them, before this I would probably choose Nelson.

But when your QB is an elite one you never know if his receivers are a product of him just like Jennings.

    ——————————-
Cobb is a slot WR, those guys are much easier to get than your outside WRs. Cobb while talented hasn’t had a big season yet either. Nelson is the one who should get more money.

I think Nelson is more of the 8M max per year type. If a new deal is only 2 seasons maybe you do go up to 10M, but i assume he wants at least three years and that is where i would start dropping the amount per year.

  43. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 24, 2014 3:38 PM

It’s funny to hear people compare Nelson to Eric Decker because he’s white. It’s also funny to hear people who don’t have a clue what they are talking about with regards to salary cap space.

The Packers have the most salary cap in the division. And tying up Rodgers at his contract for the best QB in the NFL is a bargain, especially when his average cap hit is only 500k more than a garbage QB like Jay Cutler.

  44. conormacleod says: Jul 24, 2014 3:41 PM

Ask any Packer fan; ALL their players are great. And if any free agent leaves it’s only because the Packers didn’t want him anymore. Just ask the guy up above that proclaimed they have 8 great WR’s in camp. EIGHT!!!

  45. dublindemonszfl says: Jul 24, 2014 3:47 PM

I hate the packers like most of the planet. But I do respect the way they run the team. They will not pay the guy, they get another player for Rodgers to throw it too. He will quit mad and go somewhere else to become irrelevant.

  46. veence69 says: Jul 24, 2014 3:55 PM

Maybe not worth $10 mil but no Super Bowl in 2010 without Nelson (see playoff games). As he third receiver, no one else’s third CB could cover him.

  50. omeimontis says: Jul 24, 2014 3:58 PM

I am amazed by some of his tip toe catches along the sideline, but his reception numbers are not that good, considering Aaron Rogers just loved to throw the football. Not sure he is worth $10 million but he is definitely worth more than $4 mil per year.

  51. golforepar says: Jul 24, 2014 4:01 PM

  52. Aaron Rodgers has Tiny Hands says: Jul 24, 2014 4:02 PM

Seriously, this is amazing. Nelson has been the Packers’ second-best player the last four years. All he does is produce, including in the Super Bowl. Yet, almost every Packer fan commenting here is saying he isn’t worth $10 million, while at the same time proclaiming Julius Peppers to be the greatest free agent signing of the offseason for the exact same contract Nelson is looking for. How can anyone reconcile these two opinions?

  53. ariani1985 says: Jul 24, 2014 4:09 PM

Jordy is a talented receiver, and after the Pack win the superbowl this year, he’ll get his 8/10/12 million three year contract knowing that he can be released or renegotiated before the third year. For the Brandon Marshall commenters, it’ll be interesting to see how he does when officials make offensive pass interference another point of emphasis. He pushes off to create separation all the time.

  59. Jeff says: Jul 24, 2014 4:24 PM

Would hate to see him go but with the cap there may be no way to keep him and Cobb both so in my opinion they will see how Boykin, Adams, Janis, and Abby work out this year and Jordy or Cobb one may be moving on just like they did with Jones and Jennings! Its sad but it is the way TT does bussiness he drafts develops and lets them go for younger and less money players!

  60. voiceofrealism says: Jul 24, 2014 4:24 PM

He’s not going anywhere. He’ll take an 8 mil/year contract and be happy. Only CJ is better in the division, and Marshall, while very good, is just a possession receiver. He’ll get his 10 mil/yr in 6 years when the Vikings overpay him at the end of his career.

  78. mutantman87 says: Jul 24, 2014 6:00 PM

Nelson would have been better served to pass on the first extension and proceed quickly to free agency. He has legit speed, strength, hands, and balance.

  79. shepwp1 says: Jul 24, 2014 6:01 PM

Perhaps we need to consider trading him for some defensive help. It would be a loss for us, but we do have some WRs drooling to catch a pass from AR.

  80. cribbage12 says: Jul 24, 2014 6:04 PM

He’ a legit receiver on the edge and in the slot. Good receivers are easier to find and are not worth the pay of a top notch shutdown corner, LT, QB or edge rusher. That said, he’s proven to make the tough catch along the sideline and is a legitimate deep threat. They do have to lock him – my guess is 3 years, $26M. Remember, he’s also had some injuries. Although I love Cobb, he’s more expendable, especially if Davante Adams has the skills most expect him to show.

  81. beauch11 says: Jul 24, 2014 6:43 PM

I like Jordy and think he’s a very good receiver, but let’s face it, when Aaron Rodgers is throwing you the football, you are going to have a lot of opportunities to make catches. Look at Greg Jennings’ numbers once he left. I’m not saying Jordy should not want more money than what he’s making now, he should, but I don’t know if he is worth $10 million a season. That’s number one receiver money and who knows if he will even be the #1 guy next year? I would think about inking a deal maybe worth a little less per season but maybe longer term and stay with Rodgers if I were him.

  82. greengayfudgepeckers says: Jul 24, 2014 8:30 PM

Don’t get me wrong Jordy is a good player, but he’s nowhere near being worth 10 million. Lets face it, Rodgers can make WR’s look good. If they lost Jordy tomorrow, they would still do fine with Cobb and plugging another guy in. They would be stupid to pay him 10 million IMO.

  83. crazyhorse2609 says: Jul 24, 2014 8:45 PM

No way the guy is worth 10 million. He’s 29? He is definitely a great player, very underrated, but too old to be throwing him that money. I would think he would want to stay in GB, he should still make, what, about 6-8 million or so. I think he would be a fool to not sign something reasonable just to stay in GB with Rodgers. I should state I am not a homer…I am a vikings fan.

$10 million a year?! Who does he think he is, an over-the-hill has-been defensive end who is being moved to linebacker?

No he thinks he is more deserving player than a reserve defensive end who averages 4 sacks and 24 tackles over the past 4 years that received a ridiculous 9 million a year from the queens or how about a 10 million a year receiver in Jennings who caught 60 somethings balls for 800 yards. Jordy looks like a hall of famer to your overpaid hacks.

Nice strawman argument again trying to say everyone is claiming Peppers was this best signing. No one said that they just said he was a great compliment to Matthews but that’s the way you try and prove you are right at something by making things up

Jordy is one of the good guys, no controversy or ego, already said he has more money than he needs and said he wants to stay in GB. He will sign for 7-8 per year for 3 or 4 years. The pack will also resign Cobb because they will probably have the money to pay both based on Finley’s injury which will save them at least 7 million a year.

  86. rogerrodgers says: Jul 24, 2014 9:28 PM

Pay the guy, he’s worth it and he doesn’t smoke weed.

  87. rogerrodgers says: Jul 24, 2014 9:31 PM

I don’t understand all these guys saying he’s not worth it. Are you blind? His pay is 34th amongst the other bums in the league. He was the go to guy when cobb disappeared. I didn’t see Boykins stepping up, so it’s not just about the QB.

  88. mypercyhurts2 says: Jul 24, 2014 9:35 PM

If I hear that Jordy himself said he NEEDED $10M per year, I’ll get concerned.

3 year extension, $8M per. The guaranteed amount is the only holdup.

  89. revelation123 says: Jul 24, 2014 9:49 PM

Nelson actually is worth it, but that might put GB’s cap space in a slight bind. They got him for a steal last contract.

  90. txpackfan77 says: Jul 24, 2014 9:49 PM

Let’s try this again. If there is one thing we know about Ted Thompson, is that he is not sentimental and is unlikely to overpay even one of his own draft picks. Remember that when Thompson drafted Nelson, the Packers didn’t “need” a receiver, and many, if not most fans criticized the pick? What did Thompson do in the draft this year? He went out and got insurance. He drafted three pretty decent receivers, including Abbrederis. Whether it is Cobb or Nelson, one of them is going to go. People are saying to sign Cobb and let Nelson go, but Nelson is proven. People talk about Cobb’s potential, but potential is a four-letter word. Nelson is a good receiver that is great because he has Aaron Rodgers throwing him the ball. I would be surprised if he gets more than an average $8M a year with $15M guaranteed over four years. Another option would be to sign Cobb to a short deal, and then give him the big deal in a couple of years after he has proven himself.

I look for $10 million every week — in the lottery. Doesn’t mean I’m gonna get it.

  92. pftpoetisloosebuthole says: Jul 24, 2014 10:18 PM

His agent might want 10 million a year but Jordy has already made clear his desire to play in Green Bay. The guy will get what he can but he will offer the hometown discount in the end.

  93. trapshoot says: Jul 24, 2014 10:33 PM

Damn good receiver. Worth that much, not sure.

Another Packed House of Illinois and Michigan Green Bay Packers Fans at the Annual Stockholders Luncheon in Titletown , USA this afternoon. The local retailers were jammed with these ‘paper-only owners’ buying everything with the GB logo on it again. Wish they would just stay in their own state and root for their “Home Team” , but you can’t fault them for choosing to root for a WINNER in the NFC North “Black-and-Blue” Division – lol

As for Jordy Nelson, he is most CERTAINLY worth every penny that he asks for in a new contract. PAY THE MAN !! Also, for those of you arguing about ‘he’s only a product of Aaron Rodgers passes’ ??? How about ” A-Rod is only the Top QB in the NFL BECAUSE of targets like Jordy and Randall Cobb’ ??? You can throw the ball all day long, but without Jordy making those sideline tiptoes in catchs and guys like Driver, Jennings, Cobb and James Jones to through to all these years, Aaron Rodgers wouldn’t have had the success to command HIS High-Paid salary !!

  95. Timothy Benton says: Jul 24, 2014 11:53 PM

While Nelson is great, and is a really great fit with this organization. One has to question 10 million from the stand point that how much of this is Nelson and how much is Rodgers. Since we are already paying Rodgers crazy money, and rightfully so, he is the best QB I have ever seen, I wonder if some of the greatness of Nelson is coming from the fact that our QB can drop the pass with such accuracy that no one else could ever touch the ball, thus making the receiver look great. I just have to look at every receiver that left Green Bay, not one of them are even a shadow of what they were when they played here.
Guess Nelson has to weight if he wants more rings, if that is the case should he stay here or go someplace that he will have a better chance. Since Denver sold out their future to grab the SB now, they will be nothing when this catches up to them. Patriots could use him, and to be frank, Brady is the best behind Rodgers (you can argue who was better in their prime, but until Rodgers loads up another two rings, that is out of the discussion), but how many more years before he starts to drop, and when he does he most likely will quickly (Farve, last year and the year before).

Devonte Adams is soooooo happy right now. He and Boykins are sending thank you cards to Jordy and James jones at this exact moment! Next man up, (when we don’t want to pay for you) did anyone talk to Greg Jennings?

  97. tomh51260 says: Jul 25, 2014 1:30 AM

In a league where way too often players are paid on future potential rather than real productivity I say give the man a nice contract…. Maybe not 10 but as much as you can stand as little as he will take to stay.

  98. minnesotascrotum says: Jul 25, 2014 2:13 AM

How many ’94 Chevy Silverados does a guy need?

  99. stellarperformance says: Jul 25, 2014 7:10 AM

He’ll get paid whatever other receivers with similar production numbers are getting, no more, no less. He has great route running and catching skills, but not top-tier speed. He is also one of my favorite players, because he is tough and can make any defender look bad.

  100. kingpeeny says: Jul 25, 2014 9:48 AM

Pay the man. Rodgers has a 143.9 passer rating throwing to Nelson since 2011! And this guy is not a clone of Eric Decker; Nelson is one of the best receivers in the game outside the hashmarks, and one of the best receivers overall. I’m glad TT continues to stockpile receivers, but reward your guys every now and then; he’s vastly outperformed his current contract

  101. numba1wiscosportsfan says: Jul 25, 2014 10:04 AM

hmm, not sure if we can swing that Jord-o. we all know that MY GUY Rogers can pretty much work with any reciever. next man up! hope you get your payday. maybe the vikin’s?

  102. frellmedead7 says: Jul 25, 2014 11:45 AM

Decker wishes he was a clone of Jordy Nelson.

  103. immafubared says: Jul 25, 2014 1:14 PM

I love Jordy, one of my favorites. But if football is 65% business and Nelson is approaching 30, with injuries the past two years, time to trade him and get value.
That’s what the Vikes do and it works great. Dump Percy Harvin and get a one pick and a three. Draft Corderal Patterson and a top dback.

Why pay him what he may be worth when someone else can. Hey there are a lot of fast guys who can catch a football in next years draft.

  104. judsonjr says: Jul 25, 2014 3:29 PM

I think the Packers will get a deal done. They have to pay him $4M this year anyway, so a 3yr/30M deal ends up being more like $8.5-9M a year.

As for Cobb I have no idea what his market is. He is a versatile guy who has had 1 very good season so far. I’d say he’s probably in the 5-6M a year range, but I guess if he fills someone’s niche he could get more.

“Jordy Nelson is nothing more than a product of Aaron Rodgers…

..If Ted Thompson pays him $10 million a year he’s a fool.”

Indeed. Just like Greg Jennings, right???

Yes, I didn’t notice Jennings lighting it up last year, did you? Every player has a price, if he asks too much he will be replaced. That is the reality. There is no shortage of talented football players, especially WR’s. I love Nelson, I dearly want to keep him in Green Bay, but we can’t let him destroy the payroll.

  106. codythao35 says: Jul 25, 2014 3:57 PM

Who calls Nelson great have no knowledge about football. He’s just another piece who’s on the verge of done. Again, that’s the Pack. Perhaps he should go ask Aaron to share some of that money and pay towards him since Aaron wants him on the team.

  107. stellarperformance says: Jul 25, 2014 7:21 PM

Whatever is best for the team . Which is exactly what ALL teams do with situations like this. The Packers don’t have the market on expendable players. If he’s worth it, he’ll get it. If not , he won’t. Doesn’t matter. Next man up. Personally, he is under contract this year and I would rather see what he does this year before committing to an unknown situation next year.
