John Idzik maintains Jets quarterback competition isn’t tilted to Geno Smith

Michael Vick, Geno Smith AP

It wouldn’t be a Jets training camp without beat writers painstakingly counting first-team reps for the players aspiring to be the team’s starting quarterback and the practice has continued in 2014.

Geno Smith has taken 75 percent of the snaps with the first team in the early days of camp, which would seem to lend credence to the widely held belief that he has an edge over Michael Vick. It’s a belief held by Vick and one that many members of the Jets have also espoused since the start of camp, but General Manager John Idzik continues to insist that the team is not leaning in any direction.

“I don’t think it’s tilted at all,” Idzik said, via the New York Daily News. “It’s not just purely quantifiable like that and reading the playtime and the reps and drawing assumptions from that.”

Vick has a much longer track record than Smith and it is understandable that the Jets would feel less of a need to see him in action right now, especially since he has already played for offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. When every other sign points to it being Smith’s job to lose, though, it points more to the Jets wanting Smith to avoid any complacency that could come with having the job than the kind of open competition that the team has said it is at other points this offseason.

FACT: Geno Smith went through a 4 game stretch last season where he failed to complete 10 passes or throw a TD pass in 4 straight games.

Is this the guy you can count on to win you games?

I started to read this article and then realized that I don’t care what these people say at this point. In a few weeks the QB will be officially named and then the team will play sixteen games and we will watch them while drinking beer and consuming unhealthy food.

John Idzik can say whatever he wants. Doesn’t matter at this point. Why are we pretending that this is the pentagon papers?

    TILT!

  4. whiteknightblackheart says: Jul 25, 2014 3:36 PM

Fact is that a 2nd year QB needs more reps in camp and the coaching staff needs to see if there is progression. If there isn’t then the Jets will have their QB in Vick.

… and then John Idzik sold you the Brooklyn Bridge.

When the guy you signed off the street David Nelson is the best thing he’s got to throw to how can you expect him to complete any passes??

And of course Geno will get more reps if you know what you have in Vick in Marty’s O all you need to see is his timing with these WR’s ,Geno needs the actual “work” he’s the 2nd year QB who had bad feet and no pocket awareness

As a Patriots fan I really glad to hear that the competition is tilted in Geno Smith’s favor and hope he is the Jets starting QB Week #1

If it’s not tilted toward Geno, it should be. You need to find out if this guy can play ASAP. If not– move on.

FACT: He was also a rookie with a below average offense line, no talent at wide receiver, and barely average running backs.

Yet his team STILL went 8-8 including wins over the Patriots and the Saints at home.

So the answer is yes, and I expect him to make a major step step forward and be a solid starting qb in this league.

Geno Smith had better receivers in college. FACT.

  11. nehxas says: Jul 25, 2014 4:00 PM

Fact: when he went through the four game stretch mention above the only real receiver the Jets had was out with a dislocated elbow. People loved talking about how whoever the QB was going to be he would have no one to throw to and now a year later everyone is ignoring that fact.

  12. scrp2 says: Jul 25, 2014 4:13 PM

If the Jets sweep the Patriots, that’s the super bowl to them.

  13. coloneldukelacross says: Jul 25, 2014 4:17 PM

If Vick does not like this situation, why did he sign with the Jets?

  14. gayforbrady says: Jul 25, 2014 4:37 PM

Geno Smith. I love that fact that he is the jets leading QB.

I hop Rex Ryan is their head coach for many years to come.

  15. stercuilus65 says: Jul 25, 2014 4:45 PM

FACT: Geno apologists need to quit making excuses for his terrible play last year.

  16. pisano says: Jul 25, 2014 4:56 PM

That will all change by the third or fourth game, Vick will take over, make book on it.

  17. dlk47823 says: Jul 25, 2014 5:24 PM

Of course, the Pats trolls are on the Jet page as usual. Keep making fun of Geno, he’ll take big steps in year 2 with knowledge of the offense and 4-5 new weapons. Brady will just continue to regress and you know it. Change is comin’ to the AFC East!

  18. alexb1234 says: Jul 25, 2014 5:25 PM

if you defend geno you are an “apologist” and if you knock him you are a “hater”

FACT: Geno was a rookie last year with no WRs, if anybody denies that then they are not a “hater” they simply do not know what they are talking about.

CONVENIENT that guy pointed to the 4 game stretch where Geno did not do well and ignored the last 4 games of the season… Last 4 games Geno had 59% completion percentage, 4 passing touchdowns, 2 INTs, and 2 rushing TDs.

but hey I guess I’m an apologist for pointing out FACTS

I need to find the over /under of how many games until Vick takes over so I can bet my house and become rich.
