Steelers place Mike Mitchell on PUP list to start camp

Mike Mitchell AP

The Steelers will open camp without a pair of players, including one of their rare free agent splurges.

The team announced that safety Mike Mitchell and running back Alvester Alexander would begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list.

Mitchell parlayed a solid season with the Panthers into some security, with the Steelers stepping out of form with a five-year, $25 million deal.

He showed last year he’s not averse to coming up and making big hits (though he thinks Roger Goodell is targeting him for fines), but will have to play more of a coverage role paired with Troy Polamalu.

Did the author have any thoughts of including the REASON he was placed on the PUP?

Can anyone answer psmith7716′s question? Anyone?

Groin. Tomlin said he’d be off in a week.

    They both have groin injuries.

With Mitchell having groin injury gives thomas opportunity to showcase training with Tory with 1st team.Maybe battle for position.

To many thrusts during time off!!!

    Stev433,

You dont pay mitchell 5/25 to battle for a spot. Besides, word is shamarko is more built/has the abilities moreso for troys role, not a fs role

Let’s hope both players are back to 100% soon. Go Steelers!

Thomas might be built like a SS but he has CB speed and ball skills…doesn’t matter though Mitchell will be back next week (slight groin pull)

Huge mistake by Steelers. Mitchell is all hat and no cattle. He needs to be put on the shut your pie hole list.

Tebowed out of playoffs years ago and then o winning records and o playoff appearances. The team is irrelevant anymore.

  13. steelcurtainn says: Jul 25, 2014 9:04 PM

This groin injury is just a small bump in a long season. Mitchell will help lead the steelers to their 7th superbowl title making Troy Polamalu a 3 time superbowl champ with 3 different safeties.

Nothing big. This is the best offseason signing of the year. Jealous?

Hey once you leave the raiders you get cured from the stench of losing.

Ugh see I’m almost afraid to make the post I want to make, because if I do, I might jinx the Steelers and their overall current good health. I think they’ve had it worse than most teams on the injury front the last couple of years. The only time I ever get superstitious is sports and my teams. Totally worth it though! I’ve saved us many times. :)

is he Tomlin’s nephew or something? that picture is striking!

Panthers fan club was shocked by that contract. Mitchell is a decent player, can lay the wood, but not exactly smart or technically sound. Seemed to be a journeyman who looked good playing behind that Panther front 7. Wouldve been great to sign at $1 mill a year… Shaping up to be big gaffe for the Steelers D

As a Panther fan I wanted him back BUT things didn’t work that way Good player & a old style safety good fit with the steelers

Mitchell is as overrated as they come.

  21. drfeelyouup says: Jul 26, 2014 8:19 AM

He sure isn’t Tashaun Gipson or Donte Whitners caliber. This guy is just a scrub, just like Polamalu is at this stage.

  22. olcap says: Jul 26, 2014 8:34 AM

It looks like the other Mike has picked up another regular addition to the weekly injury list.

    It’s the Tomlin way.

  23. shakespeare22 says: Jul 26, 2014 9:05 AM

Overrated? I’ve never heard of this guy until 1 minute ago.

  24. petehimself2112 says: Jul 26, 2014 10:18 AM

The Ravens just signed a better safety with a way smaller deal. Hill>Mitchell

    What I thought.
