Vikings sign two receivers, place Captain Munnerlyn on PUP

Green Bay Packers v Kansas City Chiefs Getty Images

The Vikings changed out two roster spots Friday, signing wide receivers Andy Cruse and Ty Walker and waiving undrafted rookie offensive tackle Matt Hall and third-year wide receiver Josh Cooper.

Cruse (6-3, 216) spent time on Houston’s practice squad in 2013, while Walker (5-10, 191) had practice squad stints with Green Bay and Seattle a season ago. The 24-year-old Cruse is a Miami (Ohio) product, while Walker, 23, played at Illinois State. Both players entered the NFL last spring as undrafted free agents.

The Vikings also placed cornerback Captain Munnerlyn, tight end Chase Ford, and safety Andrew Sendejo on the active/physically unable to perform list. According to coach Mike Zimmer, Munnerlyn has a “slight” hamstring ailment, while Sendejo has ankle and lower back ailments. Ford is dealing with a foot injury.

The Vikings are at the 90-player limit.

Dang – Captain Munnerlyn, like all Vikings, is a future hall of famer.

    See, I’ve been brainwashed.

Hey, a Viking article which is about football and doesn’t use the words Kluwe, Priefer, stadium, birds, Ponder, Ponder’s baby, Bridgwwater, gloves, small hands or Adrian Peterson’s children!

Is there anything this historic franchise does wrong?

We’ve filled our roster with top talent in every single position.

From Pro Bowl Receivers in Greg Jennings and Cordarrelle Patterson.

To Hall of Famer Adrian Peterson.

    And future all-star Teddy Bridgewater.

There’s nothing stopping us from being a top offense this year.

And a coach who’s never not had a top 5 defense.

    We will DOMINATE this year.

The Vikings are a horrible franchise and are 0-4 in superbowls including a beatdown to my raiders.

No ex-Packers this time? How do the Vikings expect to crawl out of last place without the maximum number of former Packers around to teach them how to win?

  10. thegreenandcold says: Jul 25, 2014 2:09 PM

They found 90 people willing to play for that joke of a “franchise?” That alone should be a story to space out the Kluwe articles.

    Top 5 NFL Receivers

    1. Calvin Johnson
    2. Andy Cruse
    3. Ty Walker
    4. Corrdelle Patterson
    5. Greg Jennings

Thought i’d get in there first.

  12. emoney826 says: Jul 25, 2014 2:15 PM

    Who? Ty Walker? Who?

Okay minnesota, you can have another ex packer. If you can’t beat us, continue trying to get players from our team, or should I say practice squad, to beat us. One of these years, you might get lucky.

Captain is supposed to represent an improvement to the Vike’s secondary and he can’t do it from the PUP list. Chances are he can’t do it from the field either but you have one of the worst if not the worse secondary in the NFL, someone else’s left overs are better than bringing back a 2nd round draft pick and girl friend beater.

  14. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 25, 2014 2:23 PM

The Vikings could sign 10 WR’s….it isn’t going to change one thing for this junk team with a horrible defense, horrible passing offense and a quickly fading run game. The Vikings finished below the Packers in rushing last year for crying out loud.

Greg Jennings is no where near a top 5 receiver anymore. Patterson has the potential to be once he learns how to actually run a route and the Vikings find a QB to get him the ball.

    To Viking fans:

Walker is the one to watch. He showed promise in training camp in GB last year. Very good hands, possession reciever, would work well in the slot. He would’ve stuck on Green Bays roster but they had too much depth on the roster to keep him.

You have to keep in mind that year after year of losing takes its toll. You can only sign so many ex-Packers and claim so many off-season SB trophies before you turn crazy.

  25. Aaron Rodgers has Tiny Hands says: Jul 25, 2014 3:27 PM

Munnerlyn is the biggest key to the improvement of the defense. They had many issues last year, but I think the biggest was there was no one to play slot cornerback. Josh Robinson was woefully out of position there last year. With Munnerlyn starting on the outside across from Rhodes Island, then moving into the slot in nickel, that problem should be solved. They’ll need to cobble together that third cornerback to play the outside in nickel and that’s a big question mark, but Munnerlyn is going to be a huge upgrade over last year, as long as that hammy doesn’t linger.

  29. fwippel says: Jul 25, 2014 3:34 PM

Hope Munnerlyn gets back on the field soon. The Viking secondary needs this guy as full strength.

Note to Mike Zimmer: Antone Exum is a corner, not a safety. Put him at CB and he’ll win the nickelback spot over Josh Robinson hands down.

Seahawks must have signed these guys to developmental contracts and assigned them to the farm club with the Minnie Tikes. They are an NFL* team, after all.

*if you include the AAA teams.

Packer fans are just so jealous cuz they don’t have a nice big city like Twin Cities. Say what you want, our time will come and Carl will be crying again like he did in the cold 2:00 am in the morning when Brett lost the championship game and left the wood packers in 07. I’m loving it. LOL!

Indeed. Just look at us Seahawks fans. Folks like to pretend that the Hawk fan base started in 2011, but in fact we’ve been here the whole time… we just had been really quiet after not winning for so long. Can you imagine how “classy” Vikings fans will be if they ever win a Superbowl?

Oh, that’s right, I guess there’s no point trying to imagine the impossible.

  36. emoney826 says: Jul 25, 2014 4:26 PM

    @ejmat2,

Actually statistically the packers defense did finish better than the vikings defense, so to answer your question, yes the packers defense was better.

Yes, the Vikings time will come, just like it has been coming since 1961. Gotta love the Vikings signing guys that aren’t good enough to make the Packers’ practice squad. Enjoy your last place finish again this year! You can always go ice fishing after the Vikings have been eliminated from the playoffs by October, as usual.

  38. beerbratscheese says: Jul 26, 2014 9:52 AM

Wait, are the Vikings seriously counting on Munnerlyn to improve that secondary? Wow. On the Packers depth chart he would easily be 4th and possibly lower. TramonWilliams, Sam Shields and Casey Hayward are all better than him; and it’s not even close.

  39. skolvikes28allday says: Jul 26, 2014 7:08 PM

Did i miss something? With all of the Packers fans on this blog talking smack about how great their personnel is vs. the Vikes, did you guys win the Superbowl last year? Your “great” team sucked and are getting worse.
Here are the Packers 8-7-1 2013 team rankings:
    RUSHING PASSING
    Offense 29th 124.0 (13th) 157.0 (31st)
    Defense 24th 167.0 (29th) 214.0 (7th)

Have a fun season after Mr. Rodgers and Mr. Fragile Clay Matthews go down with another injury this year. Wish you Sconnies had something better to do than sit in your Mom’s basement and troll on Vikings articles and dream of years past….must be a very fulfilling life.
