Stephen Hill hears heckling from fans, responds to it

AP

Generally, the Jets currently enjoy a strong (and increasingly loud) sense of optimism.  Specifically, the team still has some players about whom there is concern.

Atop the list sits receiver Stephen Hill.  The 43rd overall pick in 2012, taken two spots before Alshon Jeffrey (yes, Jets fans, Alshon Jeffrey), Hill faces a likely up-or-out training camp and preseason in 2014.

Some Jets fans already are casting a vote for out.  Via Jane McManus of ESPNNewYork.com, a fan at training camp on Friday expressed a sentiment of that sort to Hill.  And Hill responded.

“Take me out of the game?” Hill shouted to the fans behind him as he ran to the field. “You act like I didn’t hear that sh-t.”

Hill is tall and he’s fast and he went to Georgia Tech.  And that’s where the similarities with Calvin Johnson end.

Through 23 games in two seasons, Hill has caught 45 passes for 594 yards and four touchdowns.  The man who drafted Hill, G.M. Mike Tannenbaum, is long gone, and it was clear from the get-go that, like Friday’s heckler, coach Rex Ryan doesn’t belong to the Stephen Hill fan club.

“Well, nothing told me he would [contribute],” Ryan said in 2012. “Nothing. When I saw the tape [of his collegiate play] I was concerned. But Mike Tannenbaum and [senior personnel executive] Terry Bradway and all our scouts were adamant about this guy. They were adamant that this guy can do it. He can run all these routes, he had good hands and he’s got 4.2 speed at 6-foot-5. He was the guy they all wanted, but honestly, when it came down to it, a wideout? Not my dream pick. But now that we have him, of course, I want to claim him: ‘Oh, that was my pick.’ But it really wasn’t.”

Through two years, Hill has proven Ryan right.  Which could mean that Ryan will finally get his wish.

But even if Hill has joined Tannenbaum as a former Jets employee before the season starts, Ryan will be reminded of the decision to take Hill over Jeffrey when the Bears come to MetLife Stadium for a Week Three Monday night game.

  1. It could be that the Jets have had the worse QB’s in the league since he has been with the team is the reason he hasn’t produced. Just a thought.

  2. I still think the guy has some potential. He hasn’t had a QB in the NFL yet. I wouldn’t put too much blame on him.

  3. Giants should send a 7th rounder for him, sexy rexy would def agree to it and the fans would think it’s a great return on a non investment

Can you read? I enjoy my fair share of taking shots at Rex but it clearly states he made those comments in 2012.

  5. Not that he doesn’t suck, like the entirety of the organization, but his low numbers could be directly link to having the golden arms of “Butt Fumble” and Geno Smith. Also he doesn’t have an offensive coach he has Rex Ryan.

  6. The kid played in a triple option offense in college. Not exactly the best proving ground for a starting NFL WR. Calvin Johnson was fortunate to have been recruited & played at GA Tech before the Paul Johnson era.

  7. I remember that draft when everyone was taking a WR and when the Jets took Hill and we got Jeffrey I honestly thought they were the best 2 of that draft. Hey Jets fans at least you didn’t get A.J Jenkins. #DaBears

  8. Quit with the Calvin Johnson comparison. He played under Chan Gailey in a pro style offense. The better comparison would be Demaryius Thomas who also played in the triple option offense under Paul Johnson. He seems to be doing pretty well.

  9. Wow, coach really has your back. However, you can bet if Brady or Manning were throwing to him he would have much better numbers. Doesn’t matter though, he is a huge bust at this point.

Demaryius Thomas was 46/1,154/8 in his senior year at Georgia Tech. That’s almost all of the production Hill had in his college career. Still a bad comparison.

Jenkins is still better than this pure bust, which isn’t saying much, I know.

  12. Bears fans should get on their knees daily and thank the Lord that Phil Emery had the brains and stones to trade up for Jeffery.
Hill has all the measurables to be world class but it is just not coming together for him and I doubt it ever will. He honestly might be best served adding 30 lbs and trying to reinvent himself as a TE.

  13. I am a GT student who watched Stephen Hill play and I can tell you that all of us knew that after he blew up the combine he went from being a 5th round pick to a possible 1st. I am not surprised he has struggled. He made highlight reel grabs and could make defenders look silly, but he had infuriating drops and made dumb mistakes at the same time. Ultimately I still root for him to succeed and I honestly do think he could be a good player on a team with a strong offensive system, like the Broncos or Eagles. The Jets haven’t had an offense since Curtis Martin.

  14. For starters, like quarterbacks or anybody on the offensive side of the things, the JETS have zero clue how to mold offensive weapons under Rex. Watch for an under the radar trade surface between now and the end of training camp.

No, there has been plenty of times the ball hits him right in the numbers and he’s doesn’t come up with the catch. The dude has hands made of stone

  16. Stephen Hill has struggled through several injuries and poor QB play. Jets fans should cut him some slack. This is his third year. Demaryius Thomas also struggled until his third year and was talked about as a bust. Hill’s tools are still off the charts, that hasn’t changed. He’s taken his lumps, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he emerged this year. Hopefully Rex Ryan lets his play this offseason and not fan reaction and punditry be the deciding factor. If the Jets cut him without giving him a fair shot to prove he’s put it together then they may live to regret it.

  17. This guy should WANT to be cut.

Rex probably just fears Belichick and Brady turning him into the next Danny Woodhouse (in this case a 6′ 5″ Danny Woodhouse with speed)

  18. As a Lions fan it would’ve been nice to see Jeffery go to the Jets. This guy is Calvin Johnson good and it’s hard to believe he wasn’t a high first round pick. Kid is a beast and I’m not looking forward to watching him shred our D twice a year for the foreseeable future

  19. Ok. How does one judge his play when you have Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith (rookie yr), and now have Vick?
If Jeffrey were on Jets he would be insame place as Hill.
Until Jets find a real QB, all receivers would suck. Put Hill on Bears with efficient QB’s, I bet he succeeds.
The issue here is the Jets from owner to janitor.
