49ers waive QB Kory Faulkner, add OL Michael Philipp

The only NFL club with five quarterbacks on the active roster parted ways with one of their passers on Tuesday.

According to the NFL’s Tuesday transactions, the 49ers waived rookie quarterback Kory Faulkner, an undrafted free agent from Southern Illinois. This leaves Blaine Gabbert, McLeod Bethel-Thompson and Josh Johnson as the three passers vying to back up starter Colin Kaepernick.

To replace Faulkner on the roster, the 49ers added undrafted free agent rookie offensive tackle Michael Philipp on waivers from Miami. The 22-year-old Philipp started 48 games at left tackle for Oregon State.

The 49ers have all 90 roster spots filled. However, eight spots belong to players on active-reserve lists, meaning they must pass physicals to return to the practice field. In short, the 49ers are a little shorter on depth than the 90-player limit would indicate.

  1. Kap can rest easy now. Wow looking at their list of backups 49ers are in big trouble if Kap goes down.

  2. Harbaugh tried to explain to Kory that the reason the football was coming up and hitting him in the mouth all the time, off the snap, was that he wasn’t keeping his hands together. But he just never got the hang of it.

Don’t you mean. Go Santa Clara?

Once again, let’s run through all the teams where their stadium is not in their represented city.

Giants/Jets – East Rutherford, NJ (not even the same state)
    Cowboys – Arlington, TX
    Dolphins – Miami Gardens, FL
    Cardinals – Glendale, AZ
    Bills – Orchard Park, NY

Calling them Santa Clara is NOT an insult. Get more creative immediately.

  4. Josh Johnson is the only decent backup they have at QB. Faulkner is a nice kid from what I have seen in the media on him but he just isn’t NFL caliber. I couldn’t believe they signed hm. He had a good pro day but his senior year was not good. He’s just big and can run well in shorts. He has CFL backup written all over him.

Don’t forget about my Redskins who play in Maryland, and practice in Virginia.

You know, I didnt know that one actually. I’ll add your redskins to the list next time some silly little seattle fan calls us santa clara as if it’s derogatory.

  7. Uhh, who was the back up last year? Colt McCoy. All real teams are screwed if their starter goes down. It’s the salary cap era. No one has Steve Young as a backup anymore. We will win it all anyway. Go Niners!

More proof that seashells fans are so new to the NFL. They just don’t understand it’s ok for a team to have their stadiums outside the city.

  9. So, I guess we all agree that the 49ers moved out of San Fransisco and is now located in Santa Clara……hence the Santa Clara 49ers.

    Don’t Hate………..Appreciate

    Go Hawks

What does this have to do with your team at all? Even if they are the Santa Clara 49ers, how is that an insult? Please, be logical for a second and give a real answer. Im very curious.
