Mike Smith: Steven Jackson “will be ready” for Week One after hamstring injury

We may have to wait until the regular season to see whether Steven Jackson has returned to top form.

Jackson, the Falcons’ starting tailback, sustained a left hamstring injury on Monday, coach Mike Smith told reporters today.

The good news? Smith anticipates Jackson will be available for the September 7 regular season opener against New Orleans.

“I don’t think it’s going to be anything that’s going to be real significant. He will be ready for the first game,” Smith said.

Jackson dealt with hamstring and toe injuries and missed four games in 2013, his first season with Atlanta. However, Smith said Jackson injured the opposite hamstring on Monday.

The 31-year-old Jackson rushed for a career-low 543 yards on 157 carries last season, gaining just 3.5 yards per carry.

Fourth-year pro Jacquizz Rodgers and rookie Devonta Freeman are among the top reserve options behind Jackson, who’s entering his 11th NFL season.

Jackson probably didn’t figure to get too much work in the exhibition games; he had a combined 25 carries in three preseason games in 2013, and he didn’t play at all in the finale. The play of Rodgers and Freeman now becomes something to watch all the more closely during the summer. Freeman, a fourth-rounder from Florida State, is the key new addition to a running game that struggled a season ago.

Guy is constantly injured about the legs. Could have been a great one.

He will be ready for week 1 with a hurt hamstring. Why?? Cause his hamstring is always hurt cause its made of dental floss. He has had hamstring issues every year along with quad issues for the past 4 seasons. This is no different.

Mike, it doesn’t make any difference if S Jax is ready for the opener. Your MO is brutal game management and having your squad losing to the Saints again…

Perfect time for the ol’ “unless he isn’t” addition to the sentence. Hammy injury on a chronically injured hammy ready to go on a big NFL RB in 4.5 weeks? Nope. No sir-ree it won’t be. But if he plays week 1, it’ll pull again and then we will be doing the same song and dance again.

Did I say we? I meant you (falcons).

    The human injury.

They better put Secret Service protection on Rogers…they are out of RBs if he goes down too. Jackson is proving to be an unreliable asset. The rookie RB is never going to be able to protect Ryan like he needs to, and the O line, while perahaps better, needs time to gel. Going to be tough to keep Ryan upright and healthy.

Hopefully the talking heads are right that the NFL is a passing league otherwise, this crew looks thin.

Ready by week #1…back in the trainers room by week #3.

I certainly agree about one point the author made — and will take it a few steps further. Devonta Freeman is the future of the Falcon ground attack, and will actually be a key cog in the birds’ air attack too — plus he can blog.

Unlike T-Rich who prances around waiting for a big hole to open up, which blows up in his face a lot as the NFL-speed pursuit swarms in — Freeman trusts his blockers and hits holes full speed with reckless abandon. Freeman is a very intriguing prospect — keep an eye on him, especially if you run any dynasty league teams.

Remember when this guy was the last piece for the mythical “Ferrari offense” in Atlanta? Good times.

Another loss to the Saints, delivered Week 1…soon to be 2-13 with Sean Payton on the opposing sideline, Falcons.

Smart move by Fisher & the Rams cutting bait on Jackson when they did.

Steven you’ve had quite the impressive career. 10,000+ rushing yards and 60+ TDs are no joke. You were a monster in St. Louis. But your best days are behind you. It might be time to throw in the towel.

Alshon and Brandon > Julio and Roddy and it’s not even close, the Falcons are pitiful.

Rams dealt Jackson away at the right time and the Falcons are looking like suckers now. Turning out to be a poor move by the Falcon leadership which seem to think highly of themselves.
