Report: Cardinals, Patrick Peterson close to extension

Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson has gone a few rounds with Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman this offseason about which of them is the best cornerback in the NFL and Peterson may soon have a new contract to use as further ammunition for his case.

Rand Getlin of Yahoo Sports reports that the Cardinals and Peterson are close to an agreement on a contract extension that would keep Peterson in Arizona for the near future. Per Getlin, there are still some hurdles to cross but there’s a “good chance” something gets done shortly.

It’s unclear if one of the hurdles is structuring the deal so that it puts him above Sherman and Browns cornerback Joe Haden in the league’s pecking order. Sherman signed a four-year deal this year that includes $40 million in guaranteed money while Haden signed his name on a five-year deal that has $45 million in guarantees, although some of those guarantees are against injury only.

Peterson is entering the fourth year of his rookie deal, which is set to pay him more than $2.8 million, and the Cardinals exercised their fifth-year option on the 2011 first-round pick’s pact earlier this offseason.

Top number is 45 million guaranteed?

    Peterson will get 46.

Might as well pay him because they don’t have a
QB. Well they have one but he throws like 23
    ints a year.

Hey, AZ, remember 2009? LOL! That’s the closest you’ll ever get.

  7. jirashon says: Jul 29, 2014 5:21 PM

He is the best corner in the league. And the numbers won’t lie, Richard Sherman.

Somewhere right now Revis is exclaiming, “Now hold on just a second, this is getting a little bit out of control”.

This is going to be a huge contract. That guy is a beast.

    @The Pittsburgh…God’s team.

I had to thumbs-down you for that ridiculously screen name alone.

LOL, Seattle fans remember Peterson fondly thanks to his fumbles. It’ll be fun watching him get pwned again this season, too. Keep biting at ankles Peterson and let me know when you get anywhere near Sherman’s stats. I love that AZ is going to overpay this guy. PAY THE MAN. Just pay him more than Sherman, so we can continue laughing at the Cardinals for paying players MORE money for LESS production.

That’s why they’re #3 in the NFC West and couldn’t even make the playoffs.

Top players deserve top money, but when does it get to the point where their ego and needing the highest paid contract interfere with hurting the TEAM as a whole because they have so much money tied up in one guy?

Wasn’t it most of you fans claiming Peterson’s value so much more than Sherman’s bc Peterson was a kick returner or bc he played on the offense . Now like I’ve said of Sherman all along in that debate ,he’s too valuable to be playing out of position and risking injury no matter how capable he is. Did many of you forget Richard Sherman was an all PAC 10 freshman WR. Only after a knee injury did Sherman become a cb and that was his junior year ! He’s still learning the position and has already ascended to the elite of the nfl.

My point is this , pp is an incredible athlete but he also allows one of the highest passer rating/ passer compilations against and that reflects what many people see . What we see is PP getting absolutely abused ALOT . Regardless if he’s following another teams number one . He’s one of the worst cbs at doing so and the stats and eye test shows this . He would be better suited locking down one side of the field then being one of the worst statistical cbs one the move . I understand his argument , but honestly it’s a clever spin , why does pp give up soo many yards passes targets and tds . Bc he follows the other teams number one ,if he so superior why in the hell is he being abused at the statistical rate that he is . Id understand your argument if his stats were comparable bc the level of competition would fall in PPs favor. But comparing two opposite ends of the spectrum statistically and your only point is he follows opposing teams number ones is asinine when that guys getting abused regularly !

You simply cannot argue that Sherman. Albeit on one side, doesn’t far exceedingly outperform PP.

Pp has all the athletic tools , Sherman uses Smarts and savy from being a former wr to read route combinations and qbS . Different approaches both excellent but ignoring PP poor stats is crazy . That being said PP will soon take over the highest paid cb mark shortly . Going forward Cards have all the pieces in play in the secondary . Of they can gel which usually take a year or two they will be among the elite top 3-4 units . Good future for you cards fans .

@juliusanonymous: That’s why we beat you in Seattle huh. Richard Sherman isn’t anywhere near Patrick Peterson.

  15. philwauke says: Jul 29, 2014 5:35 PM

He doesn’t play on offense anymore so we don’t have to pay him as much.

  16. scmems07 says: Jul 29, 2014 5:41 PM

Sherman gets $40 mil to be a shut down corner of 2nd and 3rd string wr’s then Peterson should get much more for being a real corner who shuts down the other teams best receivers.

  17. afcdomination says: Jul 29, 2014 5:55 PM

chiefs need to do the same with Eric Berry.

Sherman shuts down literally half the field. Peterson takes out one guy and does an OK job at it. Which is more difficult?

  19. allidoiswin55 says: Jul 29, 2014 6:02 PM

scmems07- he isn’t shutting the number one recievers down he’s simply covering them but giving up all kinds of yards catches and tds . Hardly setting to brag about !

    Arizona 17 Seattle 10

The Cardinals took advantage of a huge pass interference call on SHERMAN to get back inside the red zone and Feely added his third field goal of the day to take a 9-3 lead

“Sherman gets $40 mil to be a shut down corner of 2nd and 3rd string wr’s then Peterson should get much more for being a real corner who shuts down the other teams best receivers.”

Patrick Peterson would be a lot better as a corner if the Cardinals used them as a fixture at LCB like Seattle uses Sherman.

Peterson allowed a 9.9 passer rating at LCB (Sherman 39.8) with no TDs and 3 INTs, meanwhile, at RCB he allowed 4 TDs compared to 2 INTs and a 95.9, in the slot, even worse, 3 TDs, no INTs and a 156.3 (yes, close to perfect) passer rating for the QBs.

If playing outside his position and giving up lots of TDs is being a “real corner”, I take Seattle being smart with their “fake corner” creating a island against the WR2 while the free safety and the opposite corner taking care of the WR1.

  23. juliusanonymous says: Jul 29, 2014 6:32 PM

Hope you enjoyed that win playing against a team whose OL was missing 2 starters and were missing the #1 and #2 WRs. Granted, AZ brought a great game and I’ve given them credit. But don’t act like that was on Peterson, he almost cost you the game and if you were actually watching it, you’d know that. You’d also know that Carson Palmer was getting absolutely destroyed by the Legion of Boom (3 INTs), including Sherman who had a statistically better game than Peterson.

Also, congrats on being the only team to beat the Seahawks in Seattle in 2 years. Enjoy that regular season victory. I won’t take that away from any Cardinals fans. I’m too busy drinking champagne and enjoying this Lombardi.

Week 16, 2013: AZ vs SEA stats:
Patrick Peterson: 2 tackles, 1 pass defensed, 0 INT
Richard Sherman: 8 tackles, 2 pass defensed, 2 INT

Yeah, Peterson is clearly superior. 3 INTs for all of 2013, while Richard Sherman put up 8 INTs for 2013 including 2 against Peterson’s own team (almost as many as Peterson had all year).

The two aren’t even in the same stratosphere, but keep on talkin’ Cards fans. Like the whiners, that’s all you got. Talk.

Meanwhile, we’ll keep enjoying this World Championship.

It’s funny how clueless Seattle fans are about how football works. It’s all about stats, it’s like they just look at pieces of paper and say “hey, that guy it’s good!”

people love to throw in who their a fan of like the people with sense are going to be like “he’s right. absolutely right because he’s a fan of that team, making that comment.”

  28. vancouversportsbro says: Jul 29, 2014 7:58 PM

No one cares about this guy. People saw Sherman pick off Crabtree and call him a sorry receiver. Sherman also has a ring to prove he wins. Yeah right this guy Peterson is the best in the league, more like biggest talker no one listens to in the league

  29. seahawkonthemenu602cards says: Jul 29, 2014 9:45 PM

Sherman blows. That guy gets away with so much holding its not even funny! PP dont hold and thats why het gets a few balls caught on him. He’s only gonna get better! RS will get exposed playing man D for 4 qtrs. Even just a half. With seattles pass rush and pressure, my grandma can pick off 8 floaters in a season. Peterson and cardinals are hungry! Seattle not as much. I wouldnt be surprised if AZ finishes near or better then seattle this year. Nobody’s talking about all seattle lost this offseason. That D wont be as dominant. AZ will be one of the highest scoring teams in the leauge this year. And a playoff team nobody wants to dance with. #GO CARDS
