Fred Jackson signs one-year extension with Bills

Fred Jackson AP

Bills practice was halted on Wednesday when some nasty weather rolled through the area, but some members of the organization were able to make good use of the unexpected free time.

They were able to put the finishing touches on the announcement of a one-year extension for running back Fred Jackson. Jackson was entering the final year of his contract, which is set to pay him a base salary $2.45 million. There were no financial details announced by the team.

Jackson’s role for the 2014 season is a bit unclear with Bryce Brown and Anthony Dixon joining Jackson and C.J. Spiller in the backfield. There’s been talk that the 33-year-old may be slated for a more limited role than he’s played in the past, but the extension suggests he’s still very much in the Bills’ plans now and in 2015.

Brown and Dixon are also signed through next season, but Spiller has a player option for 2015 that he’ll likely pass on exercising if things go well this year. Jackson’s extension could give the Bills more flexibility in dealing with any negotiations that may be coming with Spiller, especially if the Bills decide to follow recent trends and allocate less money at running back than at other positions.

Just gave a 33 year old running back a one year extension with a year left on his deal.

    Championship!

Fredex is the heart of the Bills team….but this is a CYA move for when Whaley lets CJ go Jarius Byrd style. NOT good! Watch CJ leave, turn into a top five back like Marshawn Lynch. Great move if CJ signs, terrible move if CJ leaves. GET CJ DEAL DONE DOUG!!!

Are you new to the NFL? He ends up getting more money this year and they spread the cap hit over two years. Bills are probably close to the cap limit and wanted to free up some money for this year.

one of the most underrated players in the league, when healthy.

Nope. I’ve watched football my whole life and it’s clear that RB’s 33 years+ aren’t good investments.

Save all the cap space you want. When CJ Spillers leaves next year, you’ll have all the cap space you need to sign the Ryan Fitzpatricks of the world.

Dude is 33 and still going. Mad respect. Hes a good leader and is a beast on the field when he has the ball. Nothing but love for Fred Jackson. If only every NFLer had his class, detrimination and heart.

Outstanding! He deserves to be rewarded and it’s good to see an NFL team show a little loyalty.

4thquarter magic hasn’t seen Fred Jackson before. Its a good investment. Experience doesn’t qualify for aptitude all the time.

too bad only just a 1 yr extension. i know he’s old, but he got a late start in the nfl after playing in the nfl europe….here’s hoping he sticks around a little longer than the 2015 season….best bill, and the only one worthy of the ring of fame, in the past 15+ yrs

this guy has been killing my fantasy team for years #freespiller

Another example of players chasing money rather than trying to go to a winning team smh

  19. polkhigh4life says: Jul 30, 2014 5:57 PM

Why do people hate the Bills so much…. A team that hasn’t won… A team that’s in the same division as Two of the most hated franchises in ALL OF SPORTS…. I mean you’d think people would root for or at least not hate on everything the Bills do…and now the front office has been the best since the mid 90s and they still can do anything right????….there’s been moreBills hate than the Jets and we HAVE our own stadium….I know… Buffalo’s a dump….Jersey is what happens when a dump throws up….and I live there….GoBuffaLo

FredEx has a lot of tread left on the tires for being 30+, so much for the theory of at that age RBs “decline”

  21. blackbug99 says: Jul 30, 2014 6:48 PM

The Bills gave him a shot after that NFL Europe debacle, and he’s never let us down! He likely won’t make the NFL HOF, but he’ll make ours. Too bad they don’t have a category, in the HOF, for honest hard working, team players! No Bills fan would begrudge Fred any extension!! He’ll retire as a Bill, and I hope he stays on as an RB coach and a mentor!!

  22. largent80100 says: Jul 30, 2014 7:46 PM

Respect for him, 33 years and going.

Meanwhile, Spiller carries the ball 6 times per game and gets tired and injured.

  23. billslifer716 says: Jul 30, 2014 7:50 PM

dude is old and in the twilight of his career. Hey, let’s give him some more money!

Spiller?! Spiller who? Oh you mean the fastest and most elusive guy in our backfield? Pfft! We’ll just let him go.

    #typical

  24. nupe3 says: Jul 30, 2014 7:58 PM

Notice the idiotic comments don’t come from Bills Fans. If only every team had a Fred Jackson the NFL would be a better league for It. Congrats Fred!

  25. catquick says: Jul 30, 2014 7:59 PM

Last year the Bills had the NO.2 rushing attack with both RBs getting hurt and missing time, a rookie QB, injured 6 games, a backup(Tuel) who never played in an NFL game. another backup(Lewis) who had 1 NFL start, and holes in the O line, with bad backups. So now some are complaining about him getting a small(by comparison) contract extension. He EARNED IT!!!!! It isn’t a gift. Spiller will get paid when his time comes. The Bills are all sorts of smarter than you fantasy league GMs who know everything except how to fix the slurpee machine.

  26. ghostofgilchrist says: Jul 30, 2014 9:03 PM

Have to consider career wear and tear alongside of age. Two more years sounds about right for Fred.

Not to compare physical talent, but to show how little Fred’s been hit over his career.

Fred Jackson, 8 years, 1394 touches

Matt Forte, 6 years, 1892 touches

Adrian Peterson, 7 years, 2239 touches

  27. yanksbills says: Jul 30, 2014 9:16 PM

There hasn’t been a real “Buffalo” Bill since the 90s legacy ended. Best wishes for the most loyal, lovable Bill since Flutie was sent packing.

  28. thekindone4 says: Jul 30, 2014 10:16 PM

If any Bills fans complain about this extension, they are insane! Jackson is the heart and soul of this team. Plays when injured and he is dedicated to the city of Buffalo! This contract will not impact the ability to resign Spiller if they choose to do so. But with this coaching and management staff seeming to like bigger backs,(Bryce Brown, rumor of interest in Hyde from Ohio State at the draft) and the $ Spiller will want, this might be his last year in Buffalo

  29. billsboy88 says: Jul 31, 2014 12:19 AM

Jackson is a beast and an ideal player I’m terms of production, heart, work ethic and leadership. This deal will mean nothing when it comes time to resign CJ. No chance Spiller leaves. A good move for the bills. That is all.

  30. timmyp716 says: Jul 31, 2014 2:38 AM

Hey Seattle, you have a 5th round pick and we have C.J Spiller…..
