Chris Johnson: I’m going to do great things this year

AP

There haven’t been many situations in the last few years when the Jets offense was compared favorably to that of any other team, but running back Chris Johnson doesn’t seem that interested in the past.

That goes for his own results as well. Johnson’s production the last couple of seasons has raised a lot of questions about whether or not Johnson has passed the point where he can be a top-flight runner in the NFL. Johnson has been adamant that there’s plenty left in his tank and thinks “it’s not hard to be the top guy” in a league where most of the top backs are running for 1,100 or 1,200 yards. He also thinks that moving from the Titans’ offense to the Jets’ scheme represents a big step forward.

“I went through a lot of situations last year. You look at [LeSean] McCoy. He got put in a great situation: great offense and great schemes. So he’s doing what he’s supposed to do,” Johnson said, via the New York Daily News. “I went through three different offensive coordinators [with the Titans]. I feel like I now have a great offensive coordinator in Marty [Mornhinweg]. And I’m going to do great things this year.”

There have been plenty of players who have seen their play take a positive turn after a change of scenery and Johnson has run for at least 1,000 yards in each of his six NFL seasons, so it’s not like he fell completely off the radar after 2009. We’ve also seen plenty of players who are unable to recapture their old magic and the answer to which camp Johnson belongs in will go a long way toward determining both the Jets’ fortunes in 2014 and his own future in the NFL.

  1. What great things? Like blaming your O line when you only average 1.6 yards per carry?
After you got your money you QUIT on the Titans…period! Glad you are gone and your the Jets problem!

  2. …like climb a tree and go to a museum and go to the top of the Empire State Building and loads of stuff!

  3. If the Titans didn’t overpay him, nobody would have anything negative to say about his play. Guy is averaging 1661 yards from scrimmage and just under 10 TDs per season for his career. That’s excellent.

  4. Dude doesn’t know what it means to be a Jet. He should have said he’ll rush for 5,000 yards this year.

  5. What would a week be without three or four boasts of greatness from various NY Jets? He’s just doing his part.

  6. Can we say delusional , it’s one thing to think YOU can still play but to declare Marty Mornhenweig a great O.C. Is going to far.

  7. CJ’s math isn’t so good either … He’s actually had two offensive coordinators the past three years: Chris Palmer and Dowell Loggains.

  8. * Apparently, it’s my reading that isn’t so good: Chris was referring to all six years he was a Titan … when he also had Mike Heimerdinger as an OC.

  9. The Geen Bay Packers have some extremely good players, and not one has forced his way into the news bragging, predicting, and declaring himself a superman who will destroy the league and set a new standard. That is why we love the Packers, just hard working, honest football players. I sure hope they destroy the jets in week 2.

  10. Chris Johnson has most 80+ yard runs from scrimmage than ANY other Runningback in NFL history.

Chris Johnson is only the 6th player in NFL history to run for over 2,000 yards in a season.

Chris Johnson has run for over 1,000 yards in each of his 6 NFL seasons.

Name other hyped runningbacks who haven’t accomplished any of that in 6 seasons or more? There are too many to count, and/or injury prone runningbacks.

It is hard to be a consistent 1,000 yard rusher in the NFL, example: Chris Johnson is the only NFL Runningback to run for over 1,000 yards in each of the last 6 seasons. No not even AP!

Give the man, some credit !

    Go CJ Go!

  11. The constant need of the Jets coaches and players to spout off about how great they are shows how huge their inferiority complex is when it comes to the Pats.

Meanwhile the Pats say little and actually are great.

  12. Its great for Jets fans that they have a top 5QB in Geno Smith, cj2k will run for over 2000+ yards, Dee Millner is the best CB in the NFL and the Jets have the best defense in the NFL as we have been told.

BUT the one guarantee we can plan for the Jets, come December 28th at 4:15PM the celebration begins as the Jets celebrate their 46 th Anniversary.

  13. The guy could have a great year. The change will do him good and the negative press will motivate him. having said that, I don’t like the guy and suspect it will only be one good year with the jets and then the real Chris Johnson will come out.

  14. Rushing Defensive rankings for AFC EAST
    2013 season

    Patriots – 3rd (Overall NFL)
    Bills – 5th (Overall NFL)
    Dolphins – 9th (Overall NFL)

……Just trying to help CJ out for next years excuses…

  15. As ridiculous as it sounds I’m not drafting this guy in Fantasy Football because of his character issues. How can you count on someone like this in real life?

  16. I think I’ve figured it out. The Jets coaches and players don’t have to convince the rest of the league of any of their boasts, they only have to convince Jets fans to sign on for one more merry go ride. Look for them to start claiming they can fly, own a chain of free tanning salons, etc.

  17. If you have followed Chris Johnson over the year, you know this is an annual event with Chris Johnson. Each year he tells everyone hoe he will gain a gazillion yards. I think it is just a self motivation tool.

  18. Dude didn’t quit on the Titans. He just sucked. He suited up and he took the handoff and ran with the ball. He didn’t quit, he was just garbage after he signed the contract. He needed out of there a long time ago. If anything, he was just unhappy

  19. What?!? No talk about how your gonna run for 2500 rushing yards this season??? Wow I’m shocked!! This is normally the time of year he would start doing that..

  20. It will be interesting to see how CJ does when he is not pounded up the middle 15 times a game on 1st down. As well I think he did very well considering the Palmer/Loggains Sunday offensive comedy hour in Tennessee.
