Steelers extend Shaun Suisham through 2018

Shaun Suisham AP

Shaun Suisham has keen kicking for the Steelers for the last four seasons and it looks like he will be around for several more.

The Steelers announced Friday that they have agreed to a contract extension with Suisham that runs through the 2018 season. Suisham is set to make $1.425 million this season, but no terms of the extension were announced.

Suisham made 30-of-32 field goals for the Steelers last season and has made 95-of-109 over the course of his time with the team. He has also made all of his extra point attempts and limited the opposition to touchbacks on kickoffs just over 45 percent of the time.

Suisham has also played for the Cowboys, 49ers and Redskins, but he’s probably wearing his final uniform if he winds up seeing out the entire extension in Pittsburgh.

Nice to know Suisham is continuing the tradition of kickers being released by the Washington Redskins, going to other teams, and then being more reliable than they were before.

Sushi’s a damn good kicker and extremely clutch. He used to have a short leg but moving up kick offs those 5 yards mitigated that factor quite a bit. There are very few kickers in the league better than he is.

If only he could punt, too.
That’s been the trouble st position for the Steelers.

This signing should help the team that was ranked 16th in points (2013).

The Bubby Brister Era has returned.

    GO STEELERS!

If you can’t get 6, go to #6. The haters can’t stand it when the low point of the decade for this team is 16-16. This season is going to be fun to watch!

    In 3 playoff games, Dalton completed 57%, 1TD 6 Int with a 54.4 passer rating. record 0-3

Sucks that both of those missed FGs were against the Raiders, a game we lost by 3 points. Story of the first half of last season.

I suppose Mr. Rooney wants him to retire a Steeler. Now as for Big Ben,,,maybe not so much.

Kickers … no matter how talented … always seem to bounce from team to team.

  13. Most of you would be rapturous if your team won just one measly Super Bowl. We won it once, then again, and again, and again, yet again, oh, look, another one. You shrivel in our shadow. We define greatness. We built the NFL. We are the Steelers. says: Aug 1, 2014 11:28 AM

Great move. Best kicker in the league right now.

Shaun Suisham is not as good as Justin Tucker, Stephen Gostkowski, Steve Hauschka,or Blair Walsh. But I guess objectivity isn’t your strong suit.

The guy is automatic. One of the best, most reliable kickers in the league. And that’s all you can ask of your kicker: to make the FGs when they trot you out there.

And I guess checking stats isn’t your strong suit. Suisham had a 93.8 FG% last year, Tucker and Gostkowski both had a 92.7%, Walsh only had a 86.7%. Hauschka is the only one who had a higher percentage at 94.3%. Furthermore Walsh is the only one who didnt have 100% on extra points coming in at 97.7%. But dont let facts and stats cloud your “objectivity!!

He’s consistent and doesn’t make off-field headlines for fighting with paper-towel dispensers. That works for me. Kickers should be seen when they’re needed and not heard from any other time.

It’s very rare to find a guy who can kick consistently at Heinz field. Not many others have proven they can do it. Good signing.

Nice signing! Swish has been consistent in making most of his field goals and thats all you can ask for from a kicker. Hopefully Big Ben and company can get the steelers back to the superbowl so Swish can get fitted for a superbowl ring. He deserves one.

Tucker and Gostkowski both made 38 FGs, Hauschka made 35, Suisham only made 30. Tucker,Gostkowski, and Hauschka all hit FGs from 50 or more yards, Suisham did not. Suisham had less touchbacks and more returned kicks than Tucker, Gostkowski, and Hauschka. I did check the stats.

pftis, you should have let us known that your criteria for assessing kickers is:
    1. minimum of 31 FG’s made
    2. FG’s over 50 yds
    3. touchback/returns ratio

Seems randomly specific, but if that’s only what you’re measuring, then yes, Suisham is not as good.

Gostkowski and Tucker have also been voted as All-Pros.
