Texans cut another 2013 draft pick

The Houston Texans have now released three of their first five picks in the 2013 NFL draft, with all three players getting cut before ever playing a down for the team.

Today the Texans cut Trevardo Williams, a linebacker chosen in the fourth round of last year’s draft. Williams spent the 2013 season on injured reserve, and after passing a physical yesterday, he lost his job today.

The Texans had two third-round picks in last year’s draft, and both of them are already gone: Brennan Williams was waived with a failed physical last month, while Sam Montgomery was cut last season for a violation of team rules.

Throw in the fact that the Texans have already waived-injured 2013 sixth-round pick Allan Bonner and cut fellow sixth-round pick Chris Jones after training camp last year, and Houston is already without most of the guys it drafted in 2013. Although 2013 first-round pick DeAndre Hopkins and 2013 second-round pick D.J. Swearinger are starters, most of that Texans draft is a big disappointment. G.M. Rick Smith has to be shaking his head at how that draft turned out.

  1. Yes a lot going on right now with the Texans, my view of the AfCS this coming season after all is said and done

    Colts
    Jags
    Texans
    Titans

  2. Well, at least they are moving on as opposed to hanging on to players like some teams do in a feeble attempt to save face when they already know a guy cannot play.

Lolz @ ufanforreal … Jaguars are terrible. There won’t be two worse teams in the league this season much less two worse teams in the division.

glad you got a laugh from it, but will see.

  4. I’ll give them credit for making the moves, though. Some teams will hang on to dead weight just to save face, and not have articles like this written about them. Other teams actually keep the best players, regardless of where they came from.

Guess Chip Kelly is right…. way too much hype over the Draft. Expectations of cookies is too great for reality so they fail.

Oreos always, meet & ultimately exceed, my expectations.

  6. Drafting is part science, part luck. Look at Spielman, he couldn’t draft a QB to save his life. Cost him one job already, its about to cost him his second NFL job, that using the term loosely considering its only the Vikings.

  7. Blame Matt Schaub???

How about the guy pictured above???

If Bill O’Brien turns outs to be the typical ex-Belichick assistant turned head coach both O’Brien and Smith have to go!!!

  8. And they say the Raiders have the worst front office and can’t draft…pot meet kettle.

  9. The draft is a crap shoot and always will be. Some years are great and others not so much.

I doubt seriously any of you keyboard jockeys could do any better…

  10. awful job drafting, but they made up for it this year by taking a generational talent with the 1st pick

  11. Nobody is forcing Bob McNair to keep Rick Smith on the job. When he has had enough of Rick Smith’s results and is looking for something more, then he will just have to find somebody better to replace him with.

Is ted Thompson in the texans war room giving bad advise?
    —————————————————–
I’ll admit Thompson isn’t as efficient as the Vikings. Through consistency of drafting and play, the Vikings have completely eliminated the need for a trophy case, while the Packers need to have an entire room to hold theirs.

  13. The fake rhino filled with Patriots scouts in the Texans parking lot just beamed its update up to PatStar-1.

  14. And so the tradition was born. All first year players will now be called “cookies”, and in the already established tradition of Dez Bryant, will be responsible for treating veterans to tens of thousands of dollars of cookies.

  15. Is that the same Chris Jones who finished last season with 6 sacks and 54 tackles for the Pats? Yikes.

  16. Smith was Kubiak’s handpicked yes man. then he turned on him and got him fired… Smith doesn’t know what he is doing. Hopefully he is next to go!

  17. A bit melodramatic on how the draft has “failed”. If you get two consistent starters that you sign to a second contract (like Houston could with Hopkins and Swearinger) then it’s a GOOD draft.

Most of the guys sticking on rosters from rounds 3-6 are special teamers. In 4 years, most of the 3-6 rounders in the 2013 draft won’t be on their original rosters either (yet I doubt you’ll revisit this article then).

You want poor drafting? How about the fact NO ONE from the 2008 or 2009 Steelers drafts are currently on the team. That’s much more debilitating to roster building than this.

  18. Nothing like blowing your draft picks. Seems like Houston has had a problem picking the right players in the past.

  19. Why give up on them so early, especially the guy coming off IR? They just came into league last year. Stupid

  20. best way for a coach to get rid of a GM is to cut
the guys he selects. wonder if that’s going on now.

“The draft is a crap shoot and always will be. Some years are great and others not so much. I doubt seriously any of you keyboard jockeys could do any better…”

Couple of points to make here. First one being this is a faulty argument to make because we aren’t paid to do the job and we are not professionals. I would certainly hope the people that do this for a living would be better at it than people that just come on to a message board.

Secondly, all teams are built through the draft. Show me a team that constantly misses in the middle of the draft or continuously tries to create a winner through free agency and I will show you a dysfunctional team. You can get your stars in the first and second rounds, but generally the core of your team comes from 3rd-5th rounders and then you hope you luck out in the last couple of picks.

The Ravens have been a model of consistency over most of the past decade because they have been doing very well in the middle of the draft and have made some good top picks. You’re right. Nobody is perfect. There have been some misses along the way like Sergio Kindle ( 2nd round OLB/DE pass rusher who probably had the talent to be good, but injured himself in a fall), Terrence Cody (2nd rounder massive NT/DT that had the size, but nothing else), Jah Reid (huge Og/OT who was 3rd rounder, but hasn’t lived up to any expectations).

Ozzie Newsome is also pretty good at supplementing his team with free agents. He doesn’t try to build the team with them, but if there is a “right player, right price” especially in a position of need, he will bring them in and usually hits on them too.

  22. I leave you a reminder that Rick Smith has his job due to nepotism, and McNair’s practically on record as saying he’ll never lose it.

That’s what happens when the son of the owner is the godfather of the GM’s kid.

Kubiak and Phillips got fired for one losing season, the first since 2010. Phillips, in particular, made the Texans defense what it is today, and got dumped for Romeo “I haven’t done a single damn thing well since I left NE” Crennel because of cronyism.

Smith is a joke, O’Brien’s another Belichick alumni with an ego the size of Texas to boot, Crennel is useless, and the entire front office has devalued the position of QB more than any other team in the NFL.

All those people forgot that you actually need to score, but hey, we’ve got Jadeveon Clowney! A once in a generation talent! A guy with more excuses than sacks in 2013! And a DC who doesn’t know what to do with two DEs so we’ll shoehorn him in as an OLB, because a guy with only one strength (pass rush) and terrible football skills will convert over to OLB so very well.

    0-16, here we go.

  23. What would it hurt????….. Take a look at Vince Young…..
There are a lot worse QBs on NFL rosters that has never had the success Vince Young has had …(NFL Rookie of the Year, 2 Pro Bowls, Playoff experience and good Mobility). Vince has a career winning record of 31-19…
I believe this guy can help a team…even if it’s just upgrading your quarterback pool… Bring the “BUZZ” back to Texas…..

  24. Chris Jones got waived by the Texans but had 6 sacks last year with the patriots. That seems like a good pick they didnt have room on their roster for at the time

  25. Rick Smith is a finance guy not a football guy. He doesn’t know the first thing about football talent. He should stick to his skill area — structuring the financial parts of contracts to stay below caps while still keeping players happy and MOTIVATED. If Coach O’Brien didn’t get autonomy and or veto power over draft selections and other player personnel issues, the Texans are doomed to mediocrity at best.

1985? What I believe we have with arianii is a Bear sheep dressed in Viking wolf clothing.

  27. Jags swept the Texans last year and got a lot better on defense. Texans and Titans do not have a qb. Look for the jags to finish second in the south.

  28. I would imagine he’s yelling “WOOHOOO” and doing cartwheels, to get away from that organization.

  29. You can only jump on the back of the success of coaches and changes with a club for so long before your caught with your pants down and the band wagon has left the building. So please lets hope the nice comfy chair with the big office lands Mr. Smith in economy class sweating across the country as a scout next year with his tail between his legs. Yes Rick, they are looking at you while you grab a soda in the press box, b/c your a joke… The only great draft pick you have made is to make Cal Mcnair your kids godfather. Man you pawned your KID……

  30. Don’t feel bad Texan fans Schiano cut Chris Jones too. You’re in great company. Drafting players is not rocket science but damn the thought of a failure pick that could define their tenure as GM/HC turns more picks into wastes or bad picks because the fall back should be “Can this kid play football?” No matter what system or scheme you run, a football player is a football player.

That guy owns your division and you’re calling him out on “bad drafting” when his entire team was basically built on draft picks, including the QB that always scores 20+ plus against that pathetic vikings defense?

  33. And in the middle seat with two snoring, overweight guys on either side and who “invade his space” on a 6 hour transcon flight. Heck, I’d pay for the ticket and get his seat in the back row where the seats don’t recline!
