Mark Ingram: I want to be the best back in the history of football

ingram AP

Mark Ingram doesn’t just want to be a good running back. He doesn’t just want to be a great running back. He doesn’t just want to be the best running back in the NFL.

He wants to be greater than any running back who has ever played the game of football.

“The sky’s the limit, man. I want to be the best back to ever play the freakin’ game of football,” Ingram said, via ESPN.

Through three NFL seasons since the Saints took him in the first round of the 2011 draft, Ingram has fallen slightly short of being the best ever. He has 356 carries for 1,462 yards and 11 touchdowns so far in his career. Those numbers wouldn’t even make him the best running back in the NFL if he had compiled them in one year, let alone three.

The Saints declined to pick up the fifth-year option on Ingram’s rookie deal, meaning he’s heading into a contract year. There’s a good chance that the Saints will move on from Ingram in 2015, with Pierre Thomas still in place as the starter and second-year running back Khiry Robinson showing promise as a backup to Thomas. Ingram, however, says he isn’t worrying about the future.

“I just want to do everything I can to be the best player I can be to help us win games and win a championship. That’s my No. 1 goal,” Ingram said.

Ingram sets his goals high.

C’mon Mark. It’s great to aspire to be the greatest, but you have to be realistic. I wanted to be the greatest baseball power hitter of all time, but I’m not that powerful and I can’t hit a curve ball.

Three years in and not even starting. Maybe being the #1 back should be a goal – not the greatest of all time.

This dude runs with his head down. I don’t know how many plays I’ve watched where he missed an opportunity to cut to a different hole because he was staring at the ankles of the guys in front of him. You know what makes Thomas effective? He makes those cuts. That’s the difference between the two. Thomas isn’t a great back. He just knows how to play with vision.

I’m a saints fan and I’m glad he has this goal but it’s not realistic. I think Ingram gets a bad rap. When he gets carries he produces. Unfortunatly we don’t use a system where he will get 20 to 30 carries a game. He looked really good in the playoff games. The fumble in Seattle imo cost the saints the game. Dude runs hard. But he won’t see the touches he needs to be a great back in this league.

Ingram will be a good back this year. He showed tons of improvement last year. I won’t even discuss being the best ever but for him to be a great back he needs to stay healthy. No more being the reason your team loses in the playoffs by fumbling either.

  56. pftisfulloftrolls says: Aug 2, 2014 11:09 AM

It’s a little late for that. The best ever tended to be hot right out of the gate, not in Year 4, which also just happens to be a contract year for him.

At the rate he is trending up, he is going to have to play about 73 seasons to become the best ever, while trending up each of those years. Best of luck to you, Mark!

  63. whodat5150 says: Aug 2, 2014 11:29 AM

Lots of shout outs for various G.O.A.T running backs. But no mention of Emmett Smith. IMO Barry Sanders was the most enjoyable RB to.watch play. And as Emmett has admitted, he should have been chasing Sanders for the record bc it was his for the taking. I HATE the Cowboys and hate giving any of their players any props. But I MUST give credit where due. Smith was a better all around RB bc he was a better receiver and blocker than Sanders. In known passing downs, Sanders came out but Smith stayed in. But to Ingram’s credit, the guy was a good blocker from day one.

  72. unlimitedcriticism says: Aug 2, 2014 11:43 AM

  74. travishenrykid says: Aug 2, 2014 11:48 AM

In 2000, Denver’s Mike Anderson…MIKE ANDERSON…had more yards (1,487) and touchdowns (15) than Ingram has had in three seasons. Dickerson, Campbell, Portis, George Rodgers, O.J. Anderson, Edgerrin James, Curtis Martin, Alfred Morris and The Bus all had more or with 20 yards of Ingram’s first three years as rookies. His career total would tie LT for the 102nd best SEASON of all time. Good luck, buddy.

This is bigger than a lot of people think. Ingram is better than Thomas, but the Saints will have trouble affording him next year. They WILL move on. And with Brees in the front end of permanent decline, the Saints will need their D to step up this year and especially next year when Ingram is gone. Thomas won’t do it so a lot is also on Robinson, a complete unknown. This is one reason I doubt the Saints actually take the NFC South this year, and will miss the playoffs altogether next year. Just wait.

  121. getadealdonealready says: Aug 2, 2014 3:03 PM

me too! I don’t play in the NFL, but I have just as much of a chance as you of being remembered as the best back to ever play the game.

  122. getadealdonealready says: Aug 2, 2014 3:04 PM

Maybe start by being the best back on your team, and work up from there.

  123. themrrodge says: Aug 2, 2014 3:11 PM

What is so bad about wanting to be the best at what you do? Seemed like he was being enthusiastic about doing what is needed to be the best at what he does to help his team. I see why Arian Foster kept saying he just wanted to be the best teammate over and over. Anything else is misconstrued.

  124. bnwpnw says: Aug 2, 2014 3:26 PM

First reaction: Is there another NFL back named Mark Ingram?

Second reaction: Wait, it’s THAT Mark Ingram?

Third reaction: BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

Why are NFL execs still drafting these all-used-up Alabama players again?

  125. babygaga19 says: Aug 2, 2014 3:33 PM

4 game suspension for substance abuse.

Long line of do nothing Alabama players…

  127. thethunderofgunns says: Aug 2, 2014 4:10 PM

Yes, and I would be the greatest CB of all time in the NFL except for the fact that instead of this I decided to sit on my lard and play PS3, eat truckloads of Doritos and drink gallons of mountain dew. :)

  134. Deb says: Aug 2, 2014 6:05 PM

If you don’t aspire to be the best at your craft, then you can’t possibly succeed. It would be different if Ingram were a slacker, but he’s not. He works at it, and there’s nothing wrong with ambition. He just isn’t the right back for the Saints’ offense. He needs to get a much higher number of carriers than this offense provides. Hope he gets a better opportunity elsewhere.

  139. codythao35 says: Aug 2, 2014 8:50 PM

Well, doesn’t matter if u wanna be the best you ain’t the best bc you just weren’t born to be the best. AP is the best and one of a kind unlike you are 1000 of a kind. Got that? Saints are still cheaters.

  140. codythao35 says: Aug 2, 2014 8:56 PM

Oh wait, he’s already a back to future HOF.

  143. axespray says: Aug 3, 2014 1:12 AM

When the Packer’s Run D shuts you down on a less than 2 yard goal line run… you know you suck as a runningback.

…and that was the 32nd ranked 2011 Packer Defense.

Those who say they can and those who say they can’t are usually both right. I learned in life never to count any human out. We were all created to do great things, the question is did we live up to our potential? Did we take advantage of every opportunity given to us? Are you willing to sacrifice what you are today for what you want to become tomorrow? He’s quite a ways behind at the start, but it’s not where you start its where you finish. I’m not a saints fan, but I love football. The kid has a world of potential hopefully he’s working as hard as he’s ever worked to achieve his success.

  145. jayfish6402 says: Aug 3, 2014 11:39 AM

We all want things, Mark. I want a billion dollars and a spot in the Hall of Fame, but that’s not going to happen either. It’s good that he is setting his goals high and giving himself confidence, but it is questionable if he will even start for the Saints this year. I think he is an underrated running back that should get the ball more and can bring up good gains. But he will never be anywhere close to Emmitt, Sanders, Payton, or Jim Brown. I think he should have a chance and it’s not like he’s saying he IS the best running back in the league, he’s saying that’s his goal. I wish you good luck, man.

  146. drunkwino says: Aug 4, 2014 4:09 PM

Walter Peyton was NOT the best RB of all time. I mean, please! Jim Brown or Barry Sanders. Don’t get me wrong, Peyton was great, but he wasn’t the GOAT
    ————
I agree. No one even remembers Walter PEyton….now that Walter PAyton guy, now he was greatness. Either him or Jim Brown is the GOAT.

Seriously, learn a guy’s name before talking about him. Contrary to what you kids think, the name is usually spelled Payton. Peyton is actually a girls name. Look it up if you don’t believe me.

  148. swagmaster808 says: Aug 6, 2014 12:17 AM

In a world, where Rex grossman is the best quarterback of all time….

  149. BigAlHeBDMan says: Aug 6, 2014 10:22 AM

Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Adrian Peterson, Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, Gale Sayers, etc. Somehow my mind is having trouble processing Mark Ingram with this Hall Of Fame group of running backs,It’s alright to dream big though.

  150. fmc651 says: Aug 6, 2014 2:51 PM

Mark how about settling for – I want to try not to be in the discussion for one of the biggest bust in history.

  151. BigAlHeBDMan says: Aug 7, 2014 3:51 PM

Mark has to first prove he’s the best RB on the Saints.

  152. 2drinksin says: Aug 8, 2014 12:49 PM

another first round alabama bust—he’s hurt all the time and not very good. he’ll be a backup for a couple of years then get out of the league—book it!
