Washington waives Jerry Rice Jr.

Rice

Despite being undrafted and unwanted by a couple of teams that gave him tryouts, receiver Jerry Rice Jr. landed a roster spot in Washington.

After suffering a shoulder injury last week, Rice’s roster spot will soon evaporate. According to John Keim of ESPN.com, Rice was waived on Sunday with the “injured” designation. If he goes unclaimed, he’ll revert to the team’s injured reserve list.

He’ll still be paid, but not his full $420,000 salary if his three-year contract contains a “split” provision in the event of injury. While every other team has the right to make a claim for his contract, but it’s unlikely that anyone will.

Rice, the son of Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, needs surgery to repair a torn labrum.
