Seahawks sign Wade Smith

The Seahawks have added a veteran offensive lineman to their roster ahead of the start of the preseason schedule.

Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com reported that the team has signed Wade Smith to a one-year deal on Monday afternoon and Smith confirmed the news on Twitter a short time later.

Smith entered the league as a third-round pick of the Dolphins in 2003 and spent parts of four seasons in Miami before moving on to the Jets and Chiefs. He finally settled into a steady job with the Texans, starting 64 straight games for the team over the last four years and making the Pro Bowl as a guard after the 2012 season.

His play slipped along with everything else in Houston last season, but he has also spent time at tackle and center at various points in his career so he should offer good competition for a reserve role at the very least. He’s the second former Texan offensive lineman to join the team in the last few days, joining right tackle Eric Winston as experienced additions to the Super Bowl champs.

The 2013-2014 Seahawks were a fluke.

Well, we’ll just have to trust that Carroll and Schneider saw something in these two guys.

It is excellent work by the ‘Hawks that between Winston a few days ago and now Wade Smith, a former Pro Bowler, we really are addressing the depth of the Offensive Line. As many people have noted, that has been our only real weakness, and guess what? We are tackling it head on. Go ‘Hawks!

Years of beating their heads against the wall watching their Vikings lose to the Packers has really taken its toll on Vikings’ fans.

  18. jayovalentine says: Aug 4, 2014 4:11 PM

Winston was a solid pick up if he still has some left in the tank.

  19. codythao35 says: Aug 4, 2014 4:25 PM

Didn’t this guy play for Wade Phillip? Or was it Dwayne Wade in Miami? Hawks will still beat the home less cheese head in little town WI week 1 of regular season though. Packers suck. Oh wait, did Rodgers hand shrink after doing yoga? LOL!!!!!!!

What can be said about the Vikings that hasn’t already been said about Afghanistan? They look bombed-out and depleted.

I bet you wish the vikings had a fluke last year

Obviously, the majority of Seahawks fans on PFT just joined the bandwagon last year, but back to the issue. Not everyone you sign is gold. This would have been a great signing 6-7 years ago and then yes…”the rich got richer”. My guess is this is for camp bodies and depth competition and nothing more. Also, Winston was picked over for 5 month, so I doubt he is a Starter solution either. I am not coming here to flame the Seahawks, but as a Dolphins Fan with the worst O-Line in NFL history last year and passed on both these guys with still one of the highest Cap$ left. Use your head on this one. It is a reasonable signing to test the old guys.

  23. sjsuguy says: Aug 4, 2014 5:47 PM

OKC needs a lot of help on the o-line.

  24. macdaddyspeed says: Aug 4, 2014 5:49 PM

While there is a very large core group of diehard Seahawks fans, there are numerous folks who have jumped on the bandwagon. This can grow tiresome in the Seattle area at times, but hey, they are Superbowl champs and if dealing with the Johnny Come Latelys is the price, it’s a small price. So I agree, to some extent, with the detractors calling Seattle out as a bandwagon fanbase.

but as a Dolphins Fan with the worst O-Line in NFL history last year and passed on both these guys

Maybe the fins didn’t pass on them maybe they wanted to sign with a winner.

When all other jokes fail. Use the bandwagon joke. Something no one can prove so it’s a convenient insult.

  27. samschellyolsen says: Aug 4, 2014 8:52 PM

He was a Pro Bowler not that long ago. He should at least be a great back up.

    Let’s get this season started!

    Go Hawks!
