Teddy Bridgewater needs to play faster

Teddy Bridgewater AP

Whether they were drafted in the first round or signed as an undrafted free agent, there’s a learning curve that every rookie experiences when he makes it to the NFL.

Lions tight end Eric Ebron feels like he’s already scaled it, but another NFC North neophyte knows there’s still work to do. Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has been hearing from offensive coordinator Norv Turner and head coach Mike Zimmer about the need to speed up his game if he’s going to thrive against NFL defenses.

“Coach Turner always tells me I have to be quicker with my decision making,” Bridgewater said, via the Pioneer Press. “He has been telling me I’ve got to get back from under center fast. … That’s been the main point for me. Just playing faster, progressing faster and just getting rid of the football faster.”

Bridgewater hasn’t faced a defense that’s trying to plant him in the turf yet and that will be the easiest way to figure out the benefits of getting the ball out as quickly as possible, so it’s something worth watching when the Vikings kick off their preseason schedule later this week. If he doesn’t progress quickly on that front, the chances of Matt Cassel starting could increase because it’s a core part of Turner’s system and one that the Vikings aren’t likely to sacrifice in the early part of the season just because Bridgewater isn’t there yet.

Then again, Zimmer said it’s been an issue for all of the quarterbacks so Bridgewater may not find himself too far behind as he tries to adjust his game to NFL speed.

The Biggest Knocks on Teddy Bridgewater:
    1. He had a bad pro day.
    2. He has small hands.
    3. He can’t throw the ball deep.

Why these knocks are completely wrong:
    1. Jamarcus Russell had one of the best pro days of all time, which ultimately proves why the “Pro Day” is a horrible evaluation of whether a QB will be good in the NFL.
    2. His hand size is actually in the upper echelon of all the current Quarterbacks in the NFL, and larger than Tony Romo’s, Philip Rivers and only 1/8 of an inch smaller than Aaron Rodgers.
    3. His deep balls in OTA’s have already been completely flawless according to Norv Turner and the coaching staff and the only reason they lacked in college because they weren’t his first read, which all the QB’s who throw the deep ball well, have the same exact or even lower % on accuracy of deep balls that isn’t their first read.

Overall proving, none of you have actual arguments against Teddy Bridgewater except lame insults that have no validity.

There’s nothing stopping Teddy Bridgewater from being a top QB in this league.

Stop copying and pasting your word doc into every comment.

Bridgewater just admitted he doesn’t have a hang of the offense and the NFL yet. He is going to be a bust.

    Enjoy your dreams

Why rush him out there ? The Vikes will be garbage this year anyways ….. let him learn. Trade away Peterson while he still has value and quit letting him rot away in Minnesota …

  4. glennsyank13 says: Aug 5, 2014 11:07 AM

I like the argument that pro day performance means nothing. Perhaps it doesn’t mean anything if you have a great one, but if you have a bad one, it is a whole different ballgame. Using the Jamarcus argument is just asinine.

  6. jimmysee says: Aug 5, 2014 11:09 AM

Oh no — you got that backwards.

We already know from certain Vikings fans around here that Teddy is an all-time great — a lock for hall of fame — maybe even now while he’s still playing.

So instead of Teddy speeding up his play, the rest of the league has to slow it down.

As for the true nature of the article….Id like to say this about Bridgewater. None of us has any clue whether he’ll be handed a yellow jacket, a clipboard or a pink slip. Get real. Who knew Russell would be a bust? Ryan Leaf? Heath Shuler? The list goes on. Who knew Tom Brady would be a HOF’er? Norm Van Brocklin? Sonny Jurgenson? Johnny U? Roger Staubach? Bottom line is, some guys get it and some never do.

#4 Apparently, according to his coaches, he’s slow in his progressions and in running the offense in general. He’s going to be an EPIC bust.

  28. wydok says: Aug 5, 2014 11:47 AM

  30. whatjusthapped says: Aug 5, 2014 11:49 AM

Wait till the season starts, the slow speed at which Bridgewater makes decisions will only be exceeding by the number of INT’s he throws when he eventually gets around to throwing the ball.

Qb busts are not that uncommon, its just the consistency of the Viking’s GM’s in picking the busts that separates the Vikings from the rest of the NFL.

  31. ruvelligwebuike says: Aug 5, 2014 11:51 AM

Bridgewater will be fine. The question is..How is Patterson doing with the Turner offense? I know he had a tough time mastering Musgrave’s playbook…er, post-it note. Has he mastered a route beyond bubble screen yet?

  32. sonofsamadams says: Aug 5, 2014 11:53 AM

Bridgewater has the temperament of a kitten over a warm bowl of milk. He’s going to fold and be the next in a long, long, long line of huge disappointments for Queen fans.

  33. iman62 says: Aug 5, 2014 11:53 AM

I may not be the highest on Bridgewater, but you really have to give him time to learn the offense and his progressions. He’s a rookie, this is why they have practice and the preseason.

  34. sportsfan18 says: Aug 5, 2014 11:56 AM

Ultimately it comes down to brains…

Gotta be able to read defenses, know where to throw the ball to…

And this all has to be done very quickly.

To be able to do this requires film study, to learn about the defense and players you’re facing, what their tendencies are etc…

Then you have to carry that info over and be able to pull it out of your mind in a second or two as the top QB’s like Peyton routinely get the ball out of their hands in 2.35 seconds to around 2.5 seconds from the time of the snap.

Can’t do that if you don’t know what’s up.

THIS is what will determine whether Teddy will be good.

Not the size of his hands.

    Not his pro day.

    Not his deep ball.

Too soon to know about Teddy. He could have a really nice career…

    Or he might not.

  35. bucksnknucks says: Aug 5, 2014 11:59 AM

  37. crapsandviche says: Aug 5, 2014 12:02 PM

  39. GenXJay says: Aug 5, 2014 12:04 PM

ShAaron changed his stance by putting his left leg forward prior to hiking the ball. All because it fits his style. He, also, sat for 3 years holding a clipboard while having time to dream of being fast.
So, as a rookie with the potential to start, Teddy is progressing ASAP in a lot shorter time. He is going to be revered by quarterback coaches throughout the league.

  43. bobnelsonjr says: Aug 5, 2014 12:11 PM

Low Wonderlic score guys take more time to get up to the NFL level.

Bridgewater’s Wonderlic is not too low for a another position but it is low for a quarterback.

Making him the starter right away would do wonders for his career.

He can gain the experience during a season where expectations are low and the vikings can see if they want to draft another QB in the first round next spring.

I’m a little concerned because he hasn’t gotten the praise in the local media that Tarvaris Jackson got when he was starting his career.

  45. In Teddy We Trust says: Aug 5, 2014 12:12 PM

What this article tells me is that the Viking coaches have high expectations. If you saw Teddy play in college, you know that he makes quick decisions. If you’ve seen him in camp, you know that he drops back quickly and has a quick release. When you’re learning a brand new, complicated offense, it’s going to take a little time before you’re playing as fast as you need to. Can we let him play in his first preseason game before declaring him a bust?

A good Pro Day can be an exception.

A bad Pro Day means you could not produce even when no one is rushing you to knock you down into the turf. The only pressure is the one in your head to produce.

If you can put together a decent Pro Day, that says a lot and anyone who ignores that is DOOMED.

No one was this confident in Ponder. Every Viking fan was skeptical because he wasn’t a big name in college and he was drafted much higher than expected. He never did anything in training camp that was eye-popping. When he got into a game and did some positive things, people started hoping he would be good.

With Teddy, he was going to be the first overall pick until he had a bad pro day. He was a spectacular player in college. He’s drawn nothing but praise from his coaches and media observers during OTAs and training camp.

    There is no comparison.

  59. ialtomn says: Aug 5, 2014 12:31 PM

Never been sold on Bridgewater as an NFL QB. I think he’s going to look an awful lot like Geno Smith, without the wheels.

That’s not going to be a pretty sight IMO but I understand why MN drafted him. He was the last QB around who had a name and they couldn’t take Garappolo or Carr and expect their fans to stand for it.

Probably would have been better off drafting Savage later in the draft and letting him sit a year behind whatever crappy QB they trot out there.

No one yet can point to someone who’s had a BAD pro-day and then went onto a GOOD career.

That’s the part Viking fans don’t want to admit.

  66. mnvikingsfan says: Aug 5, 2014 1:17 PM

Everyone that is so down on Bridgewater need to remember one little fact……

Tom Brady was picked LAST in his draft class. No one, not the fans, not the scouts expected him to amount to anything in the NFL. Now umpteen years later, ppl talk about him as a first ballot HOFer!

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it!!

  67. purpleguy says: Aug 5, 2014 1:26 PM

If anyone has the gumption, check Bridgewater’s college stats, particularly those relating to accuracy under pressure, the telling stat for proper and quick decision making. Those stats were among the best of the upper round QBs drafted. This guy may not be a HOFer, and he may not start this year, but he’s going to be good. Besides by season’s end, Bulaga’s arms will still be short, Clinton-Dix will still be dumb, and half the other Pack 1st and 2nd year players will be on the IR.

    Yes, an inch, which is the difference between the hand size of the quarterbacks — Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers and San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick — as measured at the NFL scouting combine when they entered the draft. Rodgers’ hands (101/8 inches) are large for a quarterback;

So there you really are wrong but something tells me you are used to hearing that.

What!!!! Your brilliant GM Spieladope obviously did drafting him 12th when the consensus was he should have been a 3rd rounder. Didn’t he also bring in Feeley and resign Fiedler expecting him to start. This guy has no judge of qb talent that’s why he was fired in Miami and inexplicably was allowed to draft another qb in the 1st round 2 years later in Minnesota.

Looks like more of the same for the Vikings the next three or four years.

Bridgewater will be ‘okay’ at most, leading to 4 or 5 win seasons. After four years of this, Zimmer will end up fired. Norv will take over as interim if Zimmer hasn’t blamed him and fired Norv to get the heat off himself. A new GM and coaching staff will be hired…

    Sorry Vikes–

Odds are, the vikings are in for a rough year. Rookie coach, new stadium, new offense and a tough opening schedule adds up to a tough year. But I’m still headed to buffalo to watch the vikes in week 6 !

Another 4 decades? Really? How about your Hawks? They’ve been horrible their entire history until last year other than 1 or 2 decent seasons here and there. You win a superbowl and now all of the sudden other teams suck for four decades? Give me a break.

“Always been mediocre” Again, really? For years they were one of the the best teams in the NFL. As a matter of fact, I bet in the short time the Seahawks have been in existence they finished in last more than the Vikings.

The Hawks are a good team and truth be told they may just win another superbowl. But don’t act as if they’ve been a great franchise. They’ve stunk for most of their existence in the NFL.

If you want to play that game….
How about no late hit call?
How about the false 1st down when Thomas fumbled?
How about the phantom PI call on 3rd down? Or better yet…
How about the non-catch called a catch to set up the FG?

Yeah there were several reasons why the Vikings didn’t win the 2009 NFCCG. One reason was the 12th man in the huddle as you stated. One was the many turnovers. But there is no denying the Vikings kicked the Saint’s rear ends up and down the field that day even though they were outscored thanks to some very nice calls by the refs in OT.

The true question to you is what does that have to do with this thread? The answer. Just another person trolling a Viking thread celebrating one great year from their favorite team.

Here’s a fact for you. The Saints have won just 5 playoff games in their entire history including the 3 post season games they won their superbowl year. Meaning other than the superbowl, the Saints franchise has stunk most of their existence. You better save up though. Soon you will need a new brown paper bag to put over your head when Brees retires.

  94. bobnelsonjr says: Aug 5, 2014 8:07 PM

The Seahawks joined the NFL in the 70’s. They have been to 2 Superbowls this century winning one of them. That means 2 George Halas and 1 Vince Lombardi Trophy.

The vikings have zero trophies in over 50 years yet attempt to talk down to the current WORLD CHAMPIONS. The vikings passed on Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers, and Drew Brees in the draft.

Until Bridgewater actually can win an NFL game talk of his “greatness” is premature.

  95. tokyofilthblaster says: Aug 5, 2014 8:11 PM

After the Packers and Seahawks, the Saints are probably next on the list of teams that totally own the Vikings.

You are right… Packer TE RICHARD Rodgers has a hand size of 10-1/8

But AARON Rodgers has hand size of 9-3/8″

so really – you are wrong.

Well since my last post was deleted I will come back with a more simple response.

@ Bengalguy – Thin Skinned? You got me all wrong. I welcome all the trash talk. I just don’t think a Bengal fan has the right to talk down to fans of other teams.

@ poorcalvinisstuckonthecrappylions – Not sure what you are trying to prove with your troll messages from Viking fans. I never denied there are trolls out there as Viking fans now did I? What I called you out for is saying it is FACT that the Viking fan base is the most embarrassing in the NFL because they troll other boards. My requesting you show me a link to this was to prove your comment was a ridiculous statement and you were playing it as if it were fact which cannot be proven. Understand or do I need to spell that out more?

By the way, you will never ever find me on a thread from another team talking about anything other than the topic at hand. So all of you TROLLS from other fan base that come into Viking threads to talk about things other than the topic are no better than the Viking fans that do the same. A little hypocritical of all of you to say Viking fans are embarrassing for trolling yet you are doing the same thing. Don’t you think? BTW, I have called out Viking fans for trolling as well. I don’t discriminate.

For those of you that come in to talk intelligent football no matter who your favorite team is, I welcome you and thank you for the debates and information.

No one yet can point to someone who’s had a BAD pro-day and then went onto a GOOD career.

    ———————————————

For current starters in the NFL, how bout Nick Foles, Cam Newton, Drew Brees to name a few. All had either bad pro days or bad performances in combine throwing drills, or both.

With the complexity of modern football Xs and Os, QBs really should be given at least 3 years of pro time before we as fans try to write the book on them. Some, like Bridgewater, maybe only deserve 2 since they essentially played in pro offenses in college (by that account, Manziel could arguably get 4-5). But our attention spans are short, so nowadays, we’re ready to draw conclusions midway thru the airing of a season’s first Hard Knocks episode.

Every draft pick’s a gamble, and potential is no guaruntee of performance. The kid played solid ball in school, and played it the way they do in the pros. That’s as good an indicator as any. He’s saying the right things, he’s not getting in trouble or making waves. Sounds fine to me.
