Tony Romo’s back injury is still affecting his deep throws

Tony Romo AP

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is most of the way back, but he is still feeling the effects of the back injury that cut short his 2013 season in one respect: His deep passes aren’t quite as good as they used to be.

That’s the word from Cowboys quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson, who said Romo has had problems throwing long.

“I think the deeper the ball goes down the field, it’s a little bit more inconsistent,” Wilson said, via the Star-Telegram. “He’s thrown all the intermediates — the fours and the seven routes and the deep outs – have been fine. It’s just the nine routes and the deep posts. Those things have been a little inconsistent. I think that’s all due to his back.”

Wilson added, however, that he expects Romo’s deep passes to improve through the next month and that Romo should be good to go for Week One.

“He can get the ball down the field,” Wilson said. “That’s not an issue. As camp goes on, he’ll just get nothing but stronger and more confident in his throws.”

Romo is expected to sit out this week’s preseason opener but take the field next week. That’s when we’ll all get a look at Romo in his first live action after back surgery.

So if he needs more reps why is he working every other day, and I’ve been a Cowboys fan since ’71. It doesn’t look good. I can see Dez acting up because he was wide open and didn’t get the ball.

yea, Romo is an int machine. had less last year than Brady, Brees, cutler, ryan, Flacco , Roethlisberger and has a 2/1 TD int ratio. You guys keep gobbling the media tho.

girls, girls…he is getting stronger every day, his back healing is ahead of schedule. His downfield accuracy? Please. I have seen him hit TO dead on the pipe at 60+ yards, without having his feet fully set. Find something else to squeak about. Why do so many rip on him, because, just like 99% of you, they get their football smarts from ESPN and other football know nothings in the FF leagues. Its already beyond pathetic and boring.

People like to point out that Cowboy veiwership #’s are good, but that cant be anything other than people wanting to see how bad the car wreck has got…

  45. ilametta91 says: Aug 5, 2014 11:30 PM

  46. tomcoughlinsdiaper says: Aug 5, 2014 11:58 PM

So wait, he can make short and mid range throws, but is having issue with back on long throws? Isn’t this the same injury most people never, ever recover from, and knocked aikman out?

So for now he can make the short, west coast throws, but assuming the back is bothering him, what happens when he starts taking hits? I am pretty certain that injury just does not heal, and it won’t be long before he can’t make any throws, when the right hut comes around.

    Do you watch football?

He’s had 40+ completions every season in the nfl and double digit completions over 40 yards each season as well. Fond a qb not named Brady or Warner who had done that for 10 seasons

  52. holdsteady76 says: Aug 6, 2014 12:44 AM

Manziel and Jones are both very brazen. I was sure Jones would draft him. They really do seem like a perfect fit.

  53. haansel82 says: Aug 6, 2014 12:53 AM

This really reminds me of last year with Peyton in Denver. I guess he had a terrible year too. Romo is one of the most underrated QB’s in the league. If he had a supporting cast around him, perhaps a line that can block and keep him off his back… Lets just blame Romo – Forget about the jokers calling the plays.

Romo teamed up with Payton in NO, Chip in PHI, Bell in NE, or Andy in KC… the list goes on… and this guy is a top 10 QB.

  72. 88xfactor says: Aug 6, 2014 9:31 AM

Romo will retire when all the other QB’s older than him retire. Like P.Manning, T.Brady, and D.Brees. Really guys the Romo jokes are getting corny and old. You haters are so transparent. Dallas has the toughest schedule in football this year. So coming out of the gate this year with the 49’er we’ll see just how ready he is. And when Romo beats the brakes off of them then let’s see what you have to say.

  73. isphet71 says: Aug 6, 2014 9:45 AM

Not smart to tip their hand even a little. An important component of having a good offense is to make the D think they can’t stop you. Knowing little things like this removes a little of that doubt.

    ==========================================

Math isn’t your strong point, is it? 95% of 32 QBs is 30. That means you’re saying that Romo is better than all but 2 QBs in the league. The top QBs are P. Manning, Rodgers, Brady, Brees. Then there’s the next tier of Ben Roethlisberger, Andrew Luck, Matt Ryan, Philip Rivers, Flacco.

    Where does Romo belong?
