Baltimore police ID the guy who peed on Art Modell’s grave

MODELL AP

Those stalwarts of law enforcement in Baltimore have found the guy who urinated on Art Modell’s grave, not that he made it that hard for them.

According to Colin Campbell of the Baltimore Sun, 61-year-old Paul Serbu of Franklin, Ohio has been charged with disorderly conduct in a cemetery.

He was identified by police Tuesday, after he posted a since-removed YouTube video of himself urinating onto the grave of the late Ravens owner, who moved the team from Cleveland.

Modell’s son David said only: “It’s in process and we look forward to the adjudication.”

Serbu was given a summons ordering him to appear in court on the misdemeanor charge, which carries a maximum sentence of two years in jail and a $500 fine.

Browns Fan logic: Screaming “YOLO!” as they’re hauled off to jail for exacting some revenge, apparently, on a mound of dirt

  3. vmu2 says: Aug 6, 2014 11:18 AM

2 years in jail is rather excessive, but the guy was stupid enough to film it and then post it online. At 61 years old no less!

  4. floriosnuts says: Aug 6, 2014 11:18 AM

Just think of all the folks who have wizzed on Art’s final repose without being dumb enough to post a video of it on YouTube.

You have to be an idiot to upload a video of yourself doing something like this. Did this mongo know that the police would check YouTube?

shouldn’t that be moved the team from Cleveland not to Cleveland.

  9. riggo08 says: Aug 6, 2014 11:24 AM

Sentence him to 250 hours of community service cleaning up cemeteries in West Baltimore. That will make him think about pissing on another grave.

  13. vancouversportsbro says: Aug 6, 2014 11:27 AM

Baltimore has it’s priorities together! Cheer a wife beater and jail someone for peeing. You can beat the living but don’t piss on the dead. Sounds like a great place to raise a family but don’t explain this to them because you can’t.

I can’t condone the guy’s stunt, but it was probably worth whatever happens to him. There’s no way he goes to jail over this, as long as he has a pretty clean record. He should be booked, all right — booked to appear on every football show in Ohio!

The only thing more stupid than posting the video on YouTube is wasting valuable resources to chase down and prosecute. Yeah – the max is 2 yrs but no way this is anything more than a fine and probation. No way Maryland will expend the resources necessary to extradite this guy from Ohio. And even if they do they still have to convince Ohio this is serious enough for the governor to sign the extradition papers. Or just hope the guy is stupid enough to go to Maryland and be brazen about who he is.

  24. stoolerz says: Aug 6, 2014 11:48 AM

And based on my recollection of the team leaving for Baltimore, I would guess that there are a LOT of Browns fans that would gladly pay $300 for the ability to do the same thing. I think it is a bit juvenile and lame, and certainly dont condone it, but did the Modell family not take this into account when they chose Art’s final resting place???

But, smirking aside, whatever your take on Modell- and I know he’s just a liiiiitle bit unliked in northeastern Ohio- that’s still a man’s final resting place. Respect for a man’s grave should trump your sports allegiance every time- so while we’ve all laughed about something like this as an absurdist laugh now and then, to actually do it is pretty heinous. Glad they’ve got this guy.

I’m guessing Modell ruined zero lives by moving the team. Especially since they got a new one 2 years later. I think the NFL considered it a win-win situation. They ended up with 2 new teams and 2 new stadiums, and a rivalry which to financially exploit later.

  58. uglydingo says: Aug 6, 2014 12:50 PM

When Brian Billick coached the Ravens they had a playoff game in Miami (which they won). In preparation for the game they trained at the ground and allegedly every Baltimore team member was encouraged to show their contempt for the Dolphins by urinating on the surface. It was described by Billick as harmless fun to build team spirit led by the great Ray Lewis. (Modell was the team owner).
It is ironic that actions against the Mr Serbu urination were taken so seriously in Baltimore.

Mr. Serbu should be awarded not arrested.

What Benedict Arthur Modell did to the city of Cleveland is to this day unforgivable.

Much in the same way what Mr. Irsay did to the city of Baltimore is unforgivable.

Here’s to hoping that this event is repeated over and over for may years to come for the both of them.

Whiny Ravens fans! You have players that were accused and tried for murder. You have a player that got only a two game suspension for beating his young girlfriend unconcious in an elavator. And the Ravens had like 6 players arrested in the off season. They led the league in this category. Yet they whine about some old coot peeing on a dead ole coots grave. Crazy! Geaux Saints!

Definition of irony: Idiot recommends another poster to go back to Googling facts, when he screws up the entire relocation history of Baltimore football.

You just told the story of how Bob Irsay moved the Colts away from Baltimore. Art Modell had publicly announced he was moving the team to Baltimore when he was convinced there was funding in place for a new stadium. There was nothing secretive about his actions.

  67. itsfootballbaby says: Aug 6, 2014 1:53 PM

  68. TheDPR says: Aug 6, 2014 1:55 PM

Whatever one believes about the afterlife or lack thereof, you have to admit that there is nobody there in that grave (he is either in hell, heaven, purgatory, has reincarnated, or he doesn’t exist at all). The grave is nothing but a symbol to spark a memory. Sure, you don’t want dudes whipping it out and whizzing in public but I don’t think it should make any legal difference that he was in a graveyard or on a street corner.

2 Superbowls in the Ravens’ 20 years in Baltimore is enough punishment for this man and all the other inbred browns fans.

However, jail time in a Baltimore prison does sound like a wonderful lesson to this simpleton.

I’m not a Browns fan, but I thought what Modell did to the City of Cleveland was cold hearted. It’s funny that Ravens fans seem more upset about this than Ray Lewis’ missing white suit – but heck, that was only a murder.

Also, seeing how Art Modell is dead, my guess is that his corpse doesn’t much care about anything that happens above ground.

  78. ravensterpsarmystrong says: Aug 7, 2014 7:38 AM

Baltimore is one of the most crime infested cities in the USA, yet its cops take time to investigate a minor misdemeanor. Baltimore cops should really spend their time and resources protecting the citizens of Baltimore instead of pursuing some buffoon from Ohio.
