Bridgewater will get some first-team reps on Friday

AP

Like Browns rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel, Vikings rookie quarterback Tedd Bridgewater won’t start his team’s preseason opener.  Like Manziel, Bridgewater will get some first-team reps in the first week of the preseason.

Via Matt Vensel of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Zimmer made the announcement on Wednesday.  And it’s no surprise.  If a quarterback doesn’t take reps with the first team, the quarterback isn’t protected by the starting offensive line.  Which puts the quarterback at greater risk of injury, especially since a backup linebacker struggling to win a job realizes that getting a clean, hard shot at a big-name rookie won’t hurt the backup linebacker’s chances of the witnesses.

Bridgewater could still be taking first-team reps as of Week One.  Zimmer will be paying close attention to several factors in making that determination.

“How [Bridgewater] handles the game situations,” Zimmer said regarding things he’ll be watching.  “When the lights come on, it will be a different deal.  It will be good for him and how he reacts to seeing different defenses he hasn’t seen very much of, how he has to adjust to the blitz, get the ball out, make the right calls. How he plays under pressure. I anticipate he’s going to play very well.”

If he plays “very well” in games that don’t count, Bridgewater will greatly enhance his chances of playing at all in the games that do.

  1. One morning I was walking down the street when I saw an old homeless man sitting at the corner of the block – he came up to me and asked me for some spare change.

I quickly responded to his request with this: “Why are you asking me for spare change when the Vikings are the real wealth of the world? if you become a fan you will obtain all the richness and greatness that comes along with it”

This man is now a millionaire.

  2. Vikings fans unite.

As we are the chosen ones!

We decide the fate of the NFL.

As we obtain greatness that is above all other teams.

Jealousy awaits us, as it should.

Our franchise will dominate the NFL for the next five decades.

    The Vikings Dynasty Begins….

    Now.

  3. The Minnesota Vikings have the most division titles in the NFL Super Bowl era with 21.

We have the third best winning percentage of every NFL franchise.

We also have the most talented team in the NFL once we draft our franchise QB.

What does your lowly team have?

  4. Skol Vikings, let’s win this game,
    Skol Vikings, honor your name,
Go get that first down, then get a touchdown
    Rock em’… Sock em”….
    Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!
Go Vikings, run up the score,
You’ll hear us cheer for more…
    V-I-K-I-N-G-S
    Skol Vikings, let’s go!

  5. My brother and I played against him when he played at Miami NorthWestern in high school. Dude was basically impossible to sack. It’ll be interesting to see if he can replicate it in the pros.

  6. I really hope Bridgewater is the deal. I’m so sick of not having a franchise QB. Nobody in MN wants to watch Matt Cassel, let Bridgewater start just like (Wilson/Dalton/Luck/RG3/etc…
We all aware of Matt Cassel’s skill set or lack there of.

Do some research before you try to bash another team, we have been to four super bowls but unfortunately have not won the big one yet. And going off of ur name, are u a texans fan? How many super bowl appearances do u guys have?

  10. If its any consolation, Bernie Kosar said Brdgewater was the best QB in the draft. I know he has his issues, but Bernie knows how to evaluate talent. Hes the one that told Jimmy Graham he should play football and worked with Jimmy Graham. Bernie has one of the shrpest minds in foot all, too bad teams dont give him a chance.

  11. Well, the season of hope is almost over for thepftpoet.

The moment of truth is upon us.

Maybe that five decade dynasty will begin not this year but next year (there’s always hope).

    Or maybe not.

  12. thepftpoet has anointed Teddy as one of the top 3 QBs in the league in nearly every post I have read since the draft. So if Teddy does not play at an elite level on Friday, should I consider Teddy a failure or the poet a fool?

Still counting those years your team played in the 6 team league as World Championships?

You have 18 Division titles, 27 playoff appearances, and 0 Super Bowl wins. Your franchise is stuck in Andy Reid mode. Meanwhile in Titletown….

  21. pftpoet needs to freshen up the bit if he’s still copying and pasting comments from before the draft. Maybe he didn’t notice that the Vikings did draft their franchise quarterback and he’ll be playing with the first team Friday night.

  22. Not news really. First round QB for QB starved team plays in preseason game with starters. Not a surprise. Raiders will have a simple version of their defense while their new people get acclimated. I bet TB looks great in this one.

Right here huckleberry! I see I struck a nerve and you are still miffed you were outed with the lame attempt to portray yourself a Packer fan when you couldn’t even spell Rodgers or Wisconsin correctly and have to say in every post you are a Packer fan? Nice try jr.

As far as baby hands the little frail qb will get demolished this year. The guy has the build of a figure skater.

  27. I’m intersted in seeing Linval Jospeh, Scott Crichton, Anthony Barr and Captian Munnerlynn play. Bridgewater will be fine, defense win championships… oh and that Harrison Smith and Xavier Rhodes could be pretty good too, plus Sharrif and Robison, Griffen, Wootton and a stable of young LB’s and CB’s for Zimmer to mold in probowlers

  28. A look at Vikings:

QB: Cassel and Ponder are backups, Brigewater probably won’t perform right away.

RB: Peterson is good, but he’s aging. If he get injured we might hear: “And the Vikings select (top college prospect here) with the number 1 pick. You better hope he doesn’t pull a Barry Sanders and leaves.

I have to admit WR and TE are pretty good but no QB to get them the ball.

    Defense is atrocious.
    Prediction:6-10

After Peterson leaves, that effectively should make the Vikings suffer 6-10 syndrome for a decade

  29. I met pftpoet’s millionaire friend and sold him a share of Viking’s stock that I mocked up on a piece of toilet paper. He’s not a millionaire anymore, but he does have a tissue to cry in while he watches the Vikings this season.

No how many titles since 1970 it is a pretty easy question?

So what point are you trying to make? Saying it wasn’t a league until the Vikings got in? Yeah they have proved what a difference they have made by not winning a title since then. To discredit the Packers history prior to that is about as stupid as saying the Yankees history didn’t count before blacks were allowed in the league or there were less teams then. Because the Vikings have a putrid history its easy to see why you fans don’t want to relive it but ask anyone whose team won one definitely cherishes it and with the Pack there have been 13!

  32. What planet are we living on when a Vikings fan questions a Packers fan about titles since 1970? SKOLOLOL!

Especially when they just added a nice shiny Lombardi trophy less than 4 years ago.

They should give a trophy to the SB Losers every year and name it the Bud Grant trophy.

  33. Seriously though, when packer fans say 13 world championships along with 4 lombardis they are double counting and padding that stats.

Its 9 world championships and 4 lombardis.

Just because packer fans are bad at math doesnt mean others are as well. Don’t try to pad the stats!

The Vikings have the been the best team in the league exactly no times.

All their fans will post: “Hey GB fans how many Super Bowls have you won in the last year”?
It doesn’t matter when they have been won, it just matters how many! get a clue viking fans! Just because your team doesn’t have a rich Championship history like the Packers and a few other teams, doesn’t mean the NFL and its records will start over again after you win! or they change the name of the NFL Championship to the Super Bowl.
Pretty soon all Viking fans will say: “What have you won this century”? Cmon, give it a rest people. Its really old now!

How about we just count the 7 world championships Green Bay has won since the vikings began trying to win one? And in those seven there is one three-peat 1965-1967.

That is something done only one other time in league history by the 1929-1931 Green Bay Packers.

  43. If numba1 is pretending to be a Packer fan, I don’t know what he gains from it. He consistently praises the Packers without feeling the need to constantly insult the Vikings or their fans. He’s making you guys look good, but it’s just so unbelievable that a Packer fan could have class that he’s attacked as an imposter.

  44. In the next 5 years, the top QBs goes like this:
    1. Bridgewater
    2. Luck
    3. Kaepernick
    4. Wilson
    5. Fole

Ha ha ha ha cheese head fans are bitter bc no peewee Rodgers on my list. He be out of the league due to Barr putting him to bed and yoga actually became his profession.

  45. For the guy who keeps saying only Detroit has fewer playoff wins than the Vikings, the Vikings have 19 playoff wins and Chicago has 17. And Chicago started playing 40 years before the Vikings. Only 11 playoff wins since 1961. Just for the sake of accuracy.

  46. Its not a question of “if” he can beat out Cassel & Ponder. Lets face it, the starting job is his. Its just a matter of making sure he has the plays & timing down so he doesn’t get killed. No matter how ready he looks in the preseason I say start Cassel at least the first three or four weeks and make sure the jitters are gone for Teddy. Even Cassel knows he is just a temporary place holder on the starting job.

  47. What’s with the fool who keeps repeating the same wrong thing about the Vikings only having more playoff wins than Detroit?

  48. Its only a preseason game, typically these games are filled with vanilla offensive play calling and little in the way of defensive schemes.

Bustwater wouldn’t begin his official march toward failure until he gets his chance in the regular season. My guess it will be Week 8 after the Vikings break out of the gate, 0-7

  49. Teddy Bridge (over troubled) water, will be just good enough every year to keep his job for another year. It will take the Viking brain trust (and I use that term loosely) the full five years of his rookie contract to figure out that he’s nothing special.

  50. Teddy Bridge (over troubled) water, will be just good enough every year to keep his job for another year. It will take the Viking brain trust (and I use that term loosely) the full five years of his rookie contract to figure out that he’s nothing special….

Really..You should approve. Ted Thompson’s last 5 first round picks are something aren’t they? How about the Burnett resigning? Peppers? The 35 year old unmotivated planter facilities case study going to be a LB? The rest of the NFC North would loves a Dom Capers extension to go along with TT’s

Everyone in the league knows that without Rodgers the Packers would be a 5 win team..

  51. silly packer fans still mad about being swept by favre back in ’09….
….or was it the fact that the vikings came into green bay last year with no quarterback and a historically terrible defense… and the pack still couldn’t pull off a win?

…i suppose my inflated ego would have been hurt too.

  52. A 4 yard dump off pass to a back up RB will touted as one of the top 5 passes in the history of the NFL.

Preseason excuses and spin will spew forth.

The best thing that can happen is the media telling the kid he is perfect and and looks wonderful at QB. He can enter the real season knowing he will be a sure Hall of Famer.

Reality then can hit him so much harder. I have a lot of confidence in the demonstrated viking history, 50+ seasons of drafting and developing QB’s. A 2nd round pick and 4th round pick is about the same price they paid to move up and draft Tarvaris Jackson (2 third round picks).

Everyone knows how this will turn out except the deluded and Rick Spielman.

  53. For Vikings Fans…..

Season of Optimism: (def:) the time between the NFL draft and the end of the preseason.

Season of Despair: (def:) the time defined between Week 1 of a new NFL season and right before the NFL draft when the realization hits it’s another year with a top 8 pick.

  54. Prediction: Minnesota Vikings 0-7 going into week 8.

I know, I know. It’s not a very bold prediction, but just thought I’d bring that thought to light for all you dreamers out there. I think you can actually get odds on this bet in Vegas right now. Not very good odds, 1.5-1, but why not take a sure bet.
