Donovan McNabb, David Diehl will call games on FOX this year

FOX broadcast a lot of games that Donovan McNabb played for the Eagles, Redskins and Vikings and he’ll be back on the network on Sundays this fall.

The difference is that McNabb will be in the booth rather than in the field. The Associated Press reports that McNabb will call some games as a color commentator alongside Dick Stockton during the regular season. McNabb, who also works for FOX Sports 1, will split the job with former Browns first-round pick Brady Quinn and former Raiders linebacker Kirk Morrison as the network looks at a variety of new voices in the booth.

One can never know what will happen on any given Sunday, but McNabb will draw the responsibility of explaining the overtime rules in his first week if the football gods have a sense of humor.

They won’t be the only new additions to the broadcast roster this year. Former Giants tackle David Diehl will also move behind the microphone and join Thom Brennaman to fill one of the slots on the FOX roster in 2014.

In addition, Ronde Barber will join Chris Myers after working with Stockton last season. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman remain the top team at FOX with the Kevin Burkhardt/John Lynch and Kenny Albert/Daryl Johnston/Tony Siragusa combos also staying intact for another season.

Hopefully Ronde does better than Tiki.

  5. dawkphan says: Aug 6, 2014 2:40 PM

Oh Lord, please keep him away from Eagles Games. I don’t want to hear all the whining about how he wasn’t appreciated when he was here ! we had a great run with him but let it Go Donovan !!

  6. taylorgangtrippymane says: Aug 6, 2014 2:41 PM

I really do not want to listen to donovan mcnabb while I am watching my super bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. Although, I probably won’t notice because they will be dominating their opponent.

  7. darkneptune73 says: Aug 6, 2014 2:41 PM

McNabb and Stockton will give Aikman and Buck a run for their money as the worst commentary team on Fox.

I’d rather listen to joe buck.

  10. bigbrad184 says: Aug 6, 2014 2:42 PM

I really wish they would get rid of Siragusa. The guy brings nothing of value to the broadcast.

  11. hakunamangata says: Aug 6, 2014 2:42 PM

Just wait till the 4th quarter. Fox better have those barf bags ready for Donovan.

  12. lonskils says: Aug 6, 2014 2:44 PM

This guy is still so biased, how can anyone think this is a good idea?

  13. patinphilly says: Aug 6, 2014 2:44 PM

should be a riot for any games that go into OT.

McNabb will have all the fans waiting for that elusive second OT period.

  14. wcdunkenfield says: Aug 6, 2014 2:46 PM

There is no truth to the rumor that McNabb will have to pass a test of the football rules first. Fox Sports is completely confident that McNabb knows the NFL rules…

  15. fmc651 says: Aug 6, 2014 2:47 PM

Donn McNabb is such a negative person. Who wants to listen to that? I do not. He is still pissed off at Washington and Minnesota for paying him an extra 2 years he didn’t deserve. Most people would be glad he got paid more than he was worth for 2 years. Not Donn, he is still bitter to this day. Go away Donn you still stink.

  16. bassplucker says: Aug 6, 2014 2:48 PM

McNabb won’t last a season. He’s bound to say something on the air at some point that will get him demoted to off-air duties if not fired outright.

It’s a very bad idea to put him on a mic. Too much of a loose cannon and too much bitterness he hasn’t dealt with yet.

  17. crownofthehelmet says: Aug 6, 2014 2:51 PM

Instead of talking into the microphone, McNabb will talk to the ground 5 ft in front of the mic.

  18. litemater95 says: Aug 6, 2014 2:54 PM

Got rid of Brian Billick for this?

  19. cueghost says: Aug 6, 2014 2:59 PM

I’ll give McNabb 3 games before they can him!

  20. wiskybuck says: Aug 6, 2014 3:00 PM

When will this guy go away?

  21. captainwisdom8888 says: Aug 6, 2014 3:01 PM

I think that a lot of the time the mistreatment of McNabb is unwarranted, the guy has never been known to stoop to low levels like other people and will always take the respectful high road no matter what. The only legitimate knock on hm revolves around his inability to bring his team to victory in the Super Bowl.

This treatment of him, however, has shaped the way Donovan sees the NFL and speaks about the NFL…and you can sense a bit of saltiness in his words, and almost pessimism at times when he speaks about issues regarding the NFL and it’s players. McNabb probably once held a dream-like view of what it must be like to play in the NFL, but reality turned out to be quite different, and now when he broadcasts I get a sense that he still has a bit of a negative view on a lot of things and still continues to carry some of the sting of what he went through as a player.

  22. laserw says: Aug 6, 2014 3:01 PM

Troy Barkman and Phil Simms need to be fired. It is all about them and they add nothing to the coverage of the game. It is as if they never played the game. Barkman is unprofessional, arrogant, uninformed, and dead wrong on most occasions. Phil Simms is all about him – he is arrogant, just plain lies, and makes stuff up. Both are so bad that each game they cover I end up having to report to their respective networks of the list of infractions that professionals should not commit.

  23. raidordie says: Aug 6, 2014 3:01 PM

    NBC must hate fox

  24. chargrz says: Aug 6, 2014 3:02 PM

  25. Brandon in Northwest Suburbia says: Aug 6, 2014 3:04 PM

I imagine Quinn will be better at calling games than playing them. And I really have no idea about Morrison.

However…I can’t think of anything McNabb has said in front of a mic up to this point that would make anybody at Fox believe this could possibly be a good idea.

  26. jimmysee says: Aug 6, 2014 3:04 PM

Fox really should be hiring me.

I’m as colorful as it gets.

  27. randomcommenter says: Aug 6, 2014 3:04 PM

Could be the worst idea Ive heard of. I cannot stand McNabb. He was a whiner and a loser as a player. I sure hope i dont have to watch a game with this idiot announcing

TV volume off…. Frank Zappa real loud.

  31. bradygirl12 says: Aug 6, 2014 3:08 PM

I don’t think Fox cares about his skills in the booth…(none). This is more about how many people want to watch/listen to a train wreck. Sometimes it brings good ratings, until he’s shown the door.

  32. richardmb52 says: Aug 6, 2014 3:08 PM

Oh God, please don’t let him call any Bears games

  33. thefirstsmilergrogan says: Aug 6, 2014 3:08 PM

finally, we know the answer to the eternal question:

“who could be worse than troy aikman and joe buck?”

  34. ridingwithnohandlebars says: Aug 6, 2014 3:11 PM

    Brady Quinn?

  35. politicallyincorrect says: Aug 6, 2014 3:13 PM

    this is absolutely absurd

  36. politicallyincorrect says: Aug 6, 2014 3:16 PM

just when you thought it could not get worse than Aikman and Buck….

McNabb is IMO the single most disgusting and unprofessional player of the past 25 years

and he is basically an idiot… truth.. just look at his wonderlic

  37. FeedtheOldtotheYoung says: Aug 6, 2014 3:17 PM

I know which games I’m avoiding.

  38. davekva72 says: Aug 6, 2014 3:18 PM

If his commentary during live games is half as idiotic as some of the things he’s said on twitter, this should be entertaining. #trainwreck

  39. ajgreenhof says: Aug 6, 2014 3:23 PM

    CBS is better.

  40. drs76109 says: Aug 6, 2014 3:23 PM

Isn’t it funny? Stockton ‘s partner was originally supposed to be Mike Shanahan.

  41. starcatcher56 says: Aug 6, 2014 3:23 PM

Well, now Donovan will have a lot of the American people not caring what he says.

  42. soundsofsuccess7 says: Aug 6, 2014 3:25 PM

    I hate Joe Buck

  43. atepper001 says: Aug 6, 2014 3:29 PM

oh man, where to start? ok, here goes:

    1) will donovan puke in the booth during a big game?
    2) will donovan study up on the rules of overtime prior to the game?
    3) will donovan be able to get through an entire broadcast w/o running out of breath?

  44. americas88team says: Aug 6, 2014 3:30 PM

  45. tjacks7 says: Aug 6, 2014 3:30 PM

Oof. Hope McNabb doesn’t call any Viking games. I couldn’t watch it. Don’t care if it’s the Super Bowl.

  46. mrlaloosh says: Aug 6, 2014 3:32 PM

Thank God for the mute button. Turn off the sound and listen to some Black Sabbath. Makes the games enjoyable.

Thank god for the mute button.

  48. drs76109 says: Aug 6, 2014 3:35 PM

CBS was better when they did the NFC…and when Pat and John were their lead team…

Some Summerall minimalism would go a long way these days in sports broadcasting.

  49. justintuckrule says: Aug 6, 2014 3:35 PM

Former rivals make an interesting pairing. Hopefully they get into a bit in the booth. That would be entertaining.

  50. ragnarthegreat says: Aug 6, 2014 3:37 PM

McNabb collected a paycheck from the Vikings and did absolutely nothing. I anticipate dead air when he is supposed to speak.

  51. dapollock69 says: Aug 6, 2014 3:40 PM

I know most I the comments are McNabb related, but speaking of Deihl- man, what a big head. How is it going to fit on my 46″ TV? It’s like Sputnik! Really, he’s got a face that was made for radio. Yikes.

  52. tjacks7 says: Aug 6, 2014 3:45 PM

“Joe Buck and Troy Aikman remain the top team at FOX”

This is when you know every single one of your broadcast teams suck.

  53. tebowislife says: Aug 6, 2014 3:45 PM

McNabb will be so lame. I would pay to hear Randy Moss do color commentary someone needs to hire him.

  54. johnnycash19 says: Aug 6, 2014 3:46 PM

At least Diehl will be a good addition. But McNabb and the rest? I’ll pass.

  55. bamboozle99 says: Aug 6, 2014 3:49 PM

Donovan McNabb? Really ?? And there I thought they couldn’t do worse than Dierdorf.

When McNabb calls the game, Time to vomit … like how McNabb did in the Super Bowl.

  65. rodvmunchiii says: Aug 6, 2014 4:07 PM

Chris Myers is terrible, I don’t know how he still has a job. Easily the most boring and generic man in the booth – I’m sad to see Ronde’s development is going to be blunted by that dullard.

  66. rajbais says: Aug 6, 2014 4:08 PM

  68. ampats says: Aug 6, 2014 4:31 PM

Hopefully we won’t see a repeat during the 4th quarter of the game with McNabb hyperventilating and puking.

  69. schmitty2 says: Aug 6, 2014 5:22 PM

Pairing a goof like McNabb with Stockton who hasn’t been relevant since the 1988 NBA finals. What could possibly go wrong here?

  70. tformation says: Aug 6, 2014 5:27 PM

Yeah, I give him a year at this gig. Maybe not even that long. You never know though. His bitterness might be entertaining.

And he can’t help but be better than Collinsworth. Of course, a toy monkey continually clanging its cymbals together throughout the entire game would be a vast improvement over Collinsworth.

  77. tfoz5150 says: Aug 6, 2014 11:25 PM
