The Saints continued to practice without quarterback Drew Brees on Wednesday, but they aren’t willing to rule him in or out of Friday’s preseason opener yet.

Coach Sean Payton said that Brees, who has not worked since late last week, is feeling a lot better as he recovers from the oblique strain that has forced him to the sideline. Brees’ progress hasn’t done anything to sway the team’s decision makers at this point, however, as Payton also said that Brees’ status for the game against the Rams.

Given how little starters play in the first preseason game and how much better Brees is than Luke McCown and Ryan Griffin, the Saints may see more benefit in just letting the quarterback recover while letting the backups do their thing on Friday. Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune thinks that is the route the team will go, writing that “there are better odds on a Sean Payton-Gregg Williams pregame hug than on Drew Brees playing against the Rams.”

There’s not much for the Saints to worry about on offense as long as Brees is back to work in the near future, which seems likely whether or not he gets the green light for Friday.
