Drew Brees out of practice again, no decision made for Friday availability

AP

The Saints continued to practice without quarterback Drew Brees on Wednesday, but they aren’t willing to rule him in or out of Friday’s preseason opener yet.

Coach Sean Payton said that Brees, who has not worked since late last week, is feeling a lot better as he recovers from the oblique strain that has forced him to the sideline. Brees’ progress hasn’t done anything to sway the team’s decision makers at this point, however, as Payton also said that Brees’ status for the game against the Rams.

Given how little starters play in the first preseason game and how much better Brees is than Luke McCown and Ryan Griffin, the Saints may see more benefit in just letting the quarterback recover while letting the backups do their thing on Friday. Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune thinks that is the route the team will go, writing that “there are better odds on a Sean Payton-Gregg Williams pregame hug than on Drew Brees playing against the Rams.”

There’s not much for the Saints to worry about on offense as long as Brees is back to work in the near future, which seems likely whether or not he gets the green light for Friday.

  1. I guess the world will see our quarterback of the future, Ryan Griffin who from what ive seen wont be a drop off…not gonna keep this team down WHO DAT!!

  2. I wouldn’t play him against the Rams even if it’s just for a series or 2. That defense is nasty and they always seem to have his number for some reason. Not to mention it wouldn’t surprise in the least if Gregg Williams brings the heat against his former team even though its sort of an unwritten rule that you don’t blitz much in the pre-season.

  3. Why do veterans play in any preseason games at all? May as well let the scrubs scrap it out.

  4. Best decision of all would be sit Brees even if he’s 100%. Because ya never know if Gregg Williams might have a NEW bounty on Drew. Without Drew the Saints are an average team. Not worth the risk. Geaux Saints!

Looks like the cheater Saints are done. Vikings offer Christian Ponder for 2 1st round draft pick. How’s that?

Better than any player on the Vikings roster minus Adrian Peterson. FYI, it wasn’t the Saints cheating. It was BRETT FARVE trying to be a hero (shining NFC Championship & Super Bowl trophies).

  6. The Saints with their third string quarterback would still have a good chance at winning the division. The offense wouldn’t be as good without Brees but this is still a team with a suffocating defense that will force a lot of turnovers. Even with the offense at half strength it’s still a 10 win team.

  7. Thinks he will play until he is 45!! I highly doubt it! Body isn’t made for it!! By the way mdd913 10 wins does not come with a lock on the playoffs!

  8. madddogg365 – Saints did cheat against Brett Favre, hitting him purposely after the play a couple of times. You can’t change that and it completely tarnishes what the Saints did that year. The Saints got what they deserved in their punishment. It should have been more.

#1. The NFL (Good Ole’ Boy Goodell) dropped ALL charges. #2. (& MOST important) Brett Farve himself said the hits were LEGAL. #3. Maybe if the Viking hadn’t FUMBLED so much & tried passing at the end of the game when there was no need for it u may had won. That tarnishes what U ALL did that season. The Viking got what the deserved. Saints NFC & Suoer Bowl Champions. Why don’t you start a campaign w’ALL your proof & get the title stripped from the Saints since you have so much proof of a bounty? That would be ANOTHER Vikings’ lost.

Some Saints fan’s pretty bitter about the comment. LOL!!!!!!!

The SWEET taste of the NFC championship on the way to a Super Bowl victory doesnt leave bitterness. Im saving that for Vikings fans. LEMONade any1? KMSL

  11. I don’t think Brees is hurt at all. I think this is to keep Williams from trying to hurt Brees. Smart move if that’s true. When Williams was DC in Nola, he did blitz in preseason.

  12. If the Vikings can hold Peterson out all preseason, the Saints should not be faulted for doing likewise.

Brees can run that offense in his sleep. Granted it would help the WRs to have him getting reps with them, but Brees could take the rest of the month off and still rip off a 400-yard game in Week 1 of the regular season., easy.

That was the dumbest thing I’ve ever read

    -Vikings fan.

  14. The old man’s body is breaking down. But that didn’t stop him from holding out for a ridiculous contract. He is going to leave this steam in shambles.

  15. Drew is fine but I would keep him out of the first one as a precaution but I’m sure Brees wants to play some and I’m sure he will get some snaps vs the titans and ravens and maybe vs the colts . Its not that he needs them but the young offense were building does
