Michael Vick’s chances of starting at quarterback for the Jets this season have a lot to do with how well Geno Smith plays in his second year with the team.

Based on Vick’s Tuesday assessment of Smith’s progress, the chances aren’t good that he’ll be moving up to the top rung on the depth chart.

“He’s going to be great,” Vick said, via ESPNNewYork.com. “He’s going to be 10 times better than where he was last year, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Those who watched Smith for long stretches of last season might feel like pointing out that 10 times zero is still zero, which would hardly preclude a move to Vick coming at some point but, for now, Vick will have to be content with a brief appearance with the starters on Thursday night against the Colts.

Should Smith handle his own run with the first team well in the preseason opener, Vick probably won’t be getting much more than that come the second week of the preseason either and Smith will be well on his way to officially earning the start for Week One of the regular season. Vick thinks that will work out well for the Jets, even if it means a bench role for himself.
