Vikings plan to continue holding Peterson out of the preseason

Adrian Peterson AP

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson rarely played in the preseason under former coach Leslie Frazier, and new coach Mike Zimmer plans to continue to hold his best player out of exhibition games.

Zimmer said Peterson is the only healthy player on the team who isn’t expected to play in Friday night’s preseason opener, and Peterson said the only way he can see himself playing in any preseason games at all is if he and the coaches decide he needs some live action in new coach Norv Turner’s offense.

“It all depends on how I’m feeling,” Peterson said, via the Pioneer Press. “I haven’t played a preseason game in two or three years, so we’ll see. With the new offense, I might want to go out there and get a few plays in, but I’ll sit down with Zimmer and see what he thinks.”

The last time Peterson carried the ball in a preseason game was the third week of the 2011 preseason, and in that game Peterson carried 14 times for 81 yards. If Peterson plays at all this preseason, it’s certainly safe to say he won’t get that heavy a workload.

And really, there’s no reason to risk an injury to Peterson in the preseason at all. Last year, Peterson sat out the entire preseason, and on his first carry of the regular season he ran 78 yards for a touchdown. Peterson will be ready when the games count.

AD is the Vikings… too bad he only had a couple of opportunities to compete for a title… such a great back rotting away in Minnesota…

Good! I can’t wait to see bridgewater in action! At this point, Cassel seems to be the starter, but what a sight to see if Teddy puts on a show during the preseason and wins the job! Exciting times to be a Viking fan

  5. gloryfromheaven46 says: Aug 6, 2014 6:51 AM

RB’s don’t even need to participate in the preseason. Preseason is more about getting the right rhythm for the starters when it’s live and the RB has the least effect on that rhythm. Their better off just participating in practices until the real action begins…

I know there’s a lot of people here who take any opportunity to bash on the Vikings (I’m not a fan of the Vikes, myself), but… taking off your team-colored glasses for a few, this guy really is a monster of a running back. There’s not much to enjoy about most Minnesota games, but it’s always fun to watch Peterson break off some crazy run on the highlight shows.

Playing veteran running backs in the preseason is simply egregious. There’s literally no logic in it.

  11. schmokes says: Aug 6, 2014 7:09 AM

I’m sure the Vikings are still charging full price for admission to the preseason games….

Of course with the way the vikings have played recently, they probably shouldn’t be charging full price for their regular season games either.

I understand everyone’s concern about him getting hurt again. He’s an older player that hasn’t been able to finish 2 of the last 3 seasons.

  20. truenorth84 says: Aug 6, 2014 8:16 AM

Maybe he’ll put up 450+ yds in two games against the pack again. That’d be half of fatty laceys season in just two games.

  21. jonnyfootball82 says: Aug 6, 2014 8:24 AM

He’s going to have a great year. I predict 3600 yards and 49 TDs

  22. themeccalambeaufield says: Aug 6, 2014 8:24 AM

So in other words he is saying screw the team I am worried about me not the team, not the team, only me, it’s only practice, not a real game just practice. If he supposedly is going to be playing a bigger role in the passing game you would think the diva would play to help get the timing down and be a (I know this is going to sound like a joke) blocker to help the young qb out. But when a player announces in the offseason that he will be running for the sideline to avoid contact I guess explains it.

  23. hardrockfootballfanatic says: Aug 6, 2014 8:47 AM

Running backs don’t need preseason carries to get into the groove, no big deal in regards to him not playing in terms of how well he will perform. BUT! Another user nailed it. The NFL is still charging regular season prices for crap football. Cut the preseason to two games and stop televising the preseason games (unless they are televised perhaps locally). The games mean nothing in terms of who wins and loses and are a borefest. The atmosphere at NFL games has declined a lot anyway because the real fans can’t afford tickets. In some stadiums you can’t even get a team chant or fans to wear their team colors. It is even worse in the preseason.

  24. flexall454 says: Aug 6, 2014 8:49 AM

He’s earned it, and can you blame the Vikings? They are paranoid about getting him injured. And if Peterson is out for the season, the Vikings playoff chances are out for the season, no matter who they put out there at quarterback…

I have been a Viking 4life since 1968. I have seen every play exhibition, regular season etc. The backlash we Viking fans have taken was well deserved, we’ve had some very poor teams not to mention bad luck and the NFL couldn’t care less about having the Minnesota Vikings in the playoffs let alone the Superbowl. However as Marty Mcfly said “History is about to change”. I will be succinct, Aaron Rogers, Jay Cutler and Matthew Stafford amongst other quarterbacks will be getting up off the ground a lot. No longer will they be dealing with a super soft secondary that let’s them run to their spots untouched and hassle free. I’m not predicting a Super Bowl or even a playoff spot but with a totally different and attacking defense and a totally new and attacking offense don’t say I didn’t warn you, enjoy the season-Go Vikings!

Adrian Peterson has only won a single playoff game in his entire Viking career.

But he puts up some nice stats if you don’t mind losing all the time.

  31. golforepar says: Aug 6, 2014 9:15 AM

As a Packer fan, it only makes sense to hold him out of the meaningless games. How many more years he has left in the tank is anybody’s guess, but there’s no denying his greatness. He may very well be the greatest of all time.

Anybody saying otherwise is just trolling and quite possibly nothing more than extra identities of “Super Troll.” I know for a fact that he/she has numerous Viking troll identities, at least one Redskins troll identity, at least one Jets troll identity, at least one Steelers troll identity, and I suspect one or more Packer troll identities.

I’d have to guess that he/she has at least one troll identity for every NFL team. I get drawn into his/her nonsense myself at times but if we can all just ignore it, he/she will revert back to World Of Warcraft sooner rather than later.

  34. fwippel says: Aug 6, 2014 9:41 AM

No surprise here. However, I do think most “experts” are underestimating this team.

Consider this: During the last two seasons, the Vikings record during the first half of the season was 5-3 and 1-7. Their record during the second half of the season was 5-3 and 4-3-1. Not that you throw out the first half of 2013 altogether, but that early season collapse made last year’s team look much worse than it actually was.

Down the stretch, the Vikings logged wins against teams that were fighting to make the playoffs, including Chicago, Detroit and Philadelphia. Minnesota is not a great team, and they have holes to fill and questions to answer. However, they are not as bad as that 5-10-1 record they posted last year.

Hate to see RBs take a pounding in games that dont mean anything at all, when your roster spot is 100%.

Let Chris Polk take some time for the Eagles. And even let Sproles get a few carries…but keep the guys healthy and fresh.

I think Shady has less yards this season than last, but if Sproles doesnt take too many carries from him, I honestly think he can shoot for 2,000. He has the big play ability for it.

I agree that AD should be held out, but the point about all running backs not needing to participate was a terrible argument. Backs need to block blitzing defenders, swing out for passes, run routes, take handoffs. Besides, the offensive linemen need to know the habits of running backs and run blocking assignments.

trolls gotta troll about something. Pre-season games are meant to figure out who is going to make the 53-man roster and to figure out position battles. Guys who are unquestioned starters have no need to play extensively. Is Aaron Rodgers going to play extensively? No, he’ll probably play a couple series and then turn it over to the two headed monster of Flynn/Tolzien. And the only reason he’ll get that much work is because he’s a QB. Is Peyton Manning or Tom Brady going to play extensively? no. Why put 30-40 carries worth of beating and banging on someone in pre-season when that can be saved for the regular season? The only reason the Packer trolls want him to play in the pre-season is that they’re hoping he gets injured so they don’t have to face him during the regular season.

  63. vikesfan says: Aug 6, 2014 12:12 PM

No sense in bashing on Peterson or
Rodgers. Anyone who does is just jealous that they aren’t on thier team. They are both great players, but unfortunately for the Vikings, the way the NFL is today, a great quarterback can take your team much farther than a great running back. That’s why the Packer’s have domonated the Vikings over the past several years. If the VIkings could have gotten even above average QB play during AP’s tenure (other than 2009), things may have been different, but unfortunately for us Viking fans, they weren’t. I really hope that Bridgewater ends this trend.

You can’t even call me a troll cause i was on the Green bay post about Don Barclay wishing him a speedy recovery you see there duchie there is a difference between being a troll and not, you are the definition of a troll!!!!!

tokyosandblaster- I have a feeling that that statement vikings fans feel the same way you feel we have to keep doing our civic duty till you can get a clue!!!

These Vikings fans are funny. I will miss them when they all vanish in October!

Who is your team are you a Seahawks fan?

  82. numba1wiscosportsfan says: Aug 6, 2014 1:53 PM

I get that trolling takes place both ways. I’m just above it, and it annoys me that fans of my favorite PROUD franchise – the GREEN BAY PACKERS – will stoop to such immature nonsense. The Viking’s trolls are no better. But I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, show some class Pack fans (or are you?). Act like you’ve “been there” – because we have!!!!

  83. In Teddy We Trust says: Aug 6, 2014 2:08 PM

The fact is, there are a small number of commenters who purport to be Viking fans who comment on every story and say ridiculous things just to get a rise out of people. The majority of us are knowledgeable Viking fans who support our team and don’t like the Packers. People should be able to tell the difference.

The problem with these people who are all upset about Viking fans who have the nerve to make a comment is they consider anyone who doesn’t call Teddy Bridgewater a bust before he’s played his first preseason game a troll.

And I’ll use as many screen names as I want. I only use one at a time, unlike many Packer commenters, and you all know who I am. I didn’t realize there was a rule.

With AP, the Vikings have a 4-10-1 record against GB.

In 2 head-to-head match ups last season, Lacy clearly outperformed AP (more total yards, more TDs, fewer fumbles).

These are facts and they cannot be disputed.

I guess AP isn’t the game-changer you think he is. Lots of yards, lots of losses.

Wow tuff to do with that Swiss cheese Defense the vikings played last year, and you may want to re look at them stats lol
    At-Yd-Avg-TD
    AP- Sun 10/27 @ MN 31-44(GB) 13-60-4.6-1
    EL- Sun 10/27 @ MN 31-44(GB) 29-94-3.24-1

    AP- Sun 11/2 @ GB 26-26 (OT)32 -146-4.6 -1
    EL- Sun 11/2 @ GB 26-26 (OT)25-110-4.4-1

    ——————————————————————–

You forgot their RECEIVING statistics. Remember I said Total Yards.

AP – 231 total yds, 2 TDs, 1 Fumble (Lost)
    EL – 270 total yds, 2 TDs, 0 Fumbles

Again, facts cannot be disputed. I did err by saying Lacy had more TDs. They both had 2. My bad.

What is a troll? I think I’m allowed to have an opinion of a fellow NFC North division team, I don’t ever respond to other commenters (unless they say something so ridiculous that it really requires a response).

  86. wallyswfl says: Aug 6, 2014 2:36 PM

So what your saying is Eddy Lacy is better cause he plays with a better QB and the defenses can’t stack the box…. Even with the stacked box had the same # of TD’s so now what were you saying again?????

Oh my God you just proved my point two-fold. Still protesting and not being able to spell Wisconsin correctly! Like I said we have seen this plenty of times, not hard to pick out trolls disguising themselves.

  90. tokyosandblaster says: Aug 6, 2014 3:31 PM

    You’re right. I don’t live in Wisconsin.

But unlike you, I am actually a Packers fan.

I never said Lacy was better. I said he outperformed AP in the 2 games they’ve played so far. You can make all the excuses you want for why that happened but don’t twist the facts as I’ve presented them.

  93. tokyosandblaster says: Aug 6, 2014 4:37 PM

You’re a really bad Vikings troll.

  94. tokyosandblaster says: Aug 6, 2014 4:38 PM

I’m saying that right now, Lacy is a better running back than Adrian Peterson.

And your opinion of the Vikings is “4 Super Bowls, 13 world championships”?

    I don’t get it.

  96. zerochampionshipsmustsuck says: Aug 6, 2014 10:20 PM

Poor little vikings fans, super bowls are for real teams. Signed, the Saints, The Seahawks and the Packers…SKOLOL

  97. bobnelsonjr says: Aug 6, 2014 11:31 PM

There are better games on satellite and the vikings are not on national television.

I bet most people in the country have seen Peterson play less than 6 times.

It really doesn’t matter if he plays or not as the outcome will be the same.

  98. formcritic says: Aug 7, 2014 1:29 AM

I just drafted Peterson. I damn well HOPE they aren’t stupid enough to use him in preseason.
