The consensus around the Jets is that Geno Smith will need to fall down flat in the preseason for Michael Vick to start in Week One.
If that’s true, Smith should remain the starter for at least another week. Smith was not spectacular against the Colts in his two series of work on Thursday night, but he hardly went down in flames while completing 4-of-6 passes and leading the Jets to three first downs and a field goal before giving way to Vick. Smith connected with Eric Decker a couple of times and picked up 10 yards on a well-run read option run for a first down and both of his incompletions came with the offensive line allowing the Colts to pressure the quarterback.
Vick entered the game in the second quarter with the starting offensive line facing off against reserves from Indianapolis. Two personal fouls helped the Jets pick up big chunks of yardage and Vick’s big highlight was a 15-yard scramble on third down that showed off his own running skills. He also converted a fourth down on a short pass to Tommy Bohanon to set up Chris Ivory’s touchdown run.
Vick remained in the game for another series before halftime. He was without the starting line this time and the absence was noticeable when he took a sack to end the drive after three plays. That brought his night to an end after completing 3-of-6 passes for 17 yards and doing little to change the status quo at quarterback for the Jets.
