Tom Brady to sit, Ryan Mallett to start tonight

Tom Brady got some good work in joint practices with Washington this week.

So they’re not going to bother with any more tonight.

According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, Brady will sit and Ryan Mallett will start tonight’s game for the Patriots.

Tom Brady has paid his dues this week.

Brady has sat out three preseason openers before (2005, 2008 and 2011), so it’s not a new thing. And he completed 60-of-80 passes in the joint workouts this week, so he’s obviously feeling sharp.

If anything, it gives the Patriots a chance to polish up Mallett for a potential trade, since they drafted Jimmy Garoppolo this spring, and Mallett’s in the final year of his rookie deal.

But playing well would be the first step in that process, and it starts tonight.

  1. 37 year old Tom, last season’s 20th best pass completion % QB, is kept in cottonwool surrounded by bubblewrap in controlled temperatures protected by his personal security team. The Patriots are going nowhere without him this season and Bill knows it.

  2. .
The only way to prove your worth during the preseason is to play against your opponents starters.

Mallet has been the NFL Man of Mystery since being drafted. Very few have actually seen him play.

  3. I doubt Mallett is going anywhere…no way do they rely on Garappolo as Brady’s backup.

  4. Tom doesn’t need to play . He’s that good and too valuable to risk injury. I only would have been surprised if this report said he WAS playing.

  5. Local paper talking how Brady shredded the Skins in practice sets (also how Pats schooled Skins in how to conduct professional practices), so nothing to prove by playing.

  6. The road to the Super Bowl starts tonight. The last dynasty in the modern era of football begins another one tonight. 2001,03,04 zero asterisk. The greatest Quarterback of all time Brady adds to his championships

  7. finally he gets to play with the starters and show what he can do. ever since hes been in ne hes had no playing time or threw to backup scrub wrs and the pats havent really had any depth at wr or te to start with. still dont have a deep wr and gronk is out, but hes got the oline and starting wrs so its a good opportunity to see what he can do. im betting after this preseason teams will be on the phone ponying up a 1st round pick.

  8. Ryan mallet has more upside than geno smith.

I am going to watch both games tonight. Obviously it’s preseason and the games don’t count.

The jets are a team in gastric distress.

  9. I’m a Pats fan but I don’t care who starts at QB in the preseason. I want to see the starting defense!

  10. @jetsbandwagon. The patriots have 3 titles to your Jets 1. So basic math dictates we have more. Zero asterisks since it wasn’t against the rule during those years. Plus we must remember it was the jets who turned in the patriots even though they were doing the same thing. The jets zero superbowl titles since jets became snitches
