Cam Newton came out to warm-ups, jogged for a bit, and threw some passes to his receivers.
That’ll be the extent of his action tonight, as the Panthers quarterback is going to get the night off against the Bills.
Newton’s not going to play as he continues to rehab his ankle following surgery to tighten loose ligaments.
It’s a prudent play for Ron Rivera, for several reasons.
First, Newton’s obviously not 100 percent yet, and hasn’t been running in camp practices. Secondly, the Panthers line is a bit of a hash, with a mix of rookies and guys coming off injuries and trying out new positions.
Throw in the fact they’re playing a solid Bills defensive line, and it’s simply too much to risk. Now they have to wonder how soon he’ll be ready, and how soon he’s able to play the way he has in previous seasons, with the mobility to extend plays.
