Kelvin Benjamin making a good first impression for Panthers

Kelvin Benjamin AP

The Panthers don’t have wide receiver Steve Smith to make the big plays, but they found someone to make them.

First-round pick Kelvin Benjamin just made a lot of fans in Charlotte with an acrobatic touchdown grab, giving the Panthers hope they have a No. 1 receiver.

Benjamin fell down/was pushed, but regained enough balance to make a falling/diving 29-yard touchdown reception from Derek Anderson.

Benjamin has shown excellent hands throughout training camp, and has developed a quick rapport with starting quarterback Cam Newton.

That’s something Smith and Newton never had, and that was part of the reason Smith’s with the Ravens now.

This guy was highly regarded in NfL circles prior to the draft. He’s gonna make a lot of media “experts” look silly during his career who tried to down in him with the same usual nonsense they shovel in anyone whom they randomly elect to put a target on.

You know the stuff. Questions about his “intelligence” and blah blah blah. Oddly enough, it’s the same thing they said about his QB. Now they can torture Secondaries together for the next decade.

Yes, Steve Smith still has some gas in the tank, but he’s been replaced by a genuine Rookie of the Year candidate. Meanwhile, two of the other Panthers’ receiver positions have also been upgraded. The moral of the story? Never trust the national media’s spin when they’re writing about a smaller media market’s team.

The catch was really spectacular and very good for the limited action that he got in the game. Awareness, coordination, and effort to make the dive really stood out and people were amazed he even caught in the first place.
