The Lions have re-signed a defensive back familiar with their defensive system.

On Friday, the club brought back Nate Ness, who spent about three weeks with Detroit in the spring.

In a corresponding roster move, the team released linebacker Cory Greenwood, leaving the Lions at the 90-player limit entering Saturday’s preseason opener vs. Cleveland. Greenwood is not subject to waivers and free to sign elsewhere.

The moves were first reported earlier today by Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com and later reported in the NFL’s daily transactions.

The 27-year-old Ness has appeared in a combined eight regular season NFL games in stints with Miami, Seattle and St. Louis. He is an Arizona product.

Ness (6-1, 190) is one of seven safeties on the Detroit roster.
