Teddy Bridgewater turns in an inoffensive opener for Vikings

AP

One of the oldest football cliches is that if you have two quarterbacks, you have none.

So how many do the Vikings actually have?

None of the triumvirate of Matt Cassel, Teddy Bridgewater or Christian Ponder did much to stand out, which only serves to bolster Adrian Peterson’s MVP candidacy before he takes his first snap of the year.

Bridgewater was a just-OK 6-of-13 for 49 yards, as the Vikings and Raiders played a genuine preseason football game.

Bridgewater looked poised and competent at times, which is kind of what we expected. But he took a few sacks, one in the red zone that he can’t take if he’s playing for real.

There wasn’t much to see on either side of a sloppy game.

Raiders rookie quarterback Derek Carr completed 10-of-16 passes but threw an interception, hardly the kind of performance that will put any heat on starter Matt Schaub.

But if this kind of play holds up over the course of the season, both teams should be in position to draft a quarterback high next year.

  1. “But threw a interception” you should say it bounced off the fullback’s hands and he had like 4 drops by his wrs referring to Carr . Bustwater is a scrub
    Khalil Mack> Clowney and Barr

  2. Play calls were conservative but Teddy looked good for what occured. Not great not bad. A few drops… Is what it is

  3. Matt Cassel led a drive right to the endzone and called it a day. I’d say he’s the starter and Bridge-water played longer than I expected and looked like a rookie which he is.

  4. 6-of-13 for 49 yards and taking a sack for a safety lol.

Chin up Vikings, at least you can keep that hot garbage for 5 seasons since you traded up and over drafted him in the first round.

    #Small hands

    ##Seattle’s Farm Team

  5. Not like the Vikings first team offense (with Cassel and Bridgewater) scored 10 points in two drives or anything. Cassel looked really good, too. Not only was the snark unnecessary, but it was inaccurate as well.

  6. What!?!? No way two rookies not putting up huge numbers in their 1st ever game. Unbelievable. I thought they were all instant hall of famers.

    Manning 26 td 28 ints in 98
    Elway 7 Tds 14 ints in 83
Montana 15 Tds 9 ints in 80 after 1 year sitting
    Favre 18 Tds 13 ints in 92 followed by 19/24 in 93

    Stand strong Snyder!! Never change!!!

  7. A rookie didn’t play like an elite QB in his first real NFL action… Well I guess he’s gonna suck forever… <— ***sarcasm***

  8. I’m sure bridgewater will emerge when it’s all said and done. It’s not like he’s competing with the other two. It’s just a matter of when he’s ready. I feel sorry for Peterson

  9. Okay, Cassel did nothing to stand out?? I’d say marching down the field, completing a pass to almost everyone on the offense and easily scoring a touchdown is pretty noteworthy. Ponder shouldn’t even be mentioned (3rd stringer) and Teddy played like a rookie.

Also, the whole “if you have two quarterbacks, you have none” thing is incredibly tired, having been quoted in basically every Vikings story on this site the past two years. On teams that are trying to improve there better dang well be some competition at EVERY position. If you don’t have an elite QB you don’t have an elite QB…they don’t fall out of trees!

  10. Cassel had a five play 70 yard TD drive. Reminds me of an old blog cliche. “If your in-game updates don’t post within 5 minutes of the occurrence you’re referring to then it’s probably a dumb idea to post anything.” Make sure you post the post game quotes by 2am EST Darin.

  11. Remember Aaron Rodgers was heavily criticized in his first season as a starter for holding onto the ball too long and taking unnecessary sacks, and he turned out ok in the end!

  12. Ummm…Cassel was 5/6 for 60 yards and a TD in his one series. What else would he need to do before he “stands out”?

  13. Teddy did much better than both he and the Vikings expected. When do the Vikes fans start to justify this performance? “He looks pretty good in his uniform, dontchathink honey???” Please.

  14. What an idiot! Did you even watch the game?? Cassel went down the field easily twice! With out adrian Peterson! The most ridiculous post I’ve ever seen on pft.

  15. Congratulations, Mr. Grant. I am so glad you are such an astute evaluator of the QB position – enlighten me more.

I see you failed to mention how effective Matt Cassel and the first-string offense was. The Vikings scored on their opening drive. I guess that doesn’t warrant a mention though since you are clearly looking for page views.

As for Teddy’s day, what is there to be surprised about? The guy is a rookie. Of course he is going to struggle – in the first NFL game of his entire life. To Teddy’s fairness, he didn’t get a lot of help from his offensive line. He was under duress from the get-go.

There are still three more pre-season games to go, but I still believe Cassel will be the Vikings’ day one starter. There is nothing wrong with this.

  16. I thought he looked good for a rookie, but would prefer to see him be able to spend a year on the sideline learning from Cassel.

Not mentioned here, but Ponder looked, well like Ponder, almost threw a pick six, and 2-3 other balls that should have been picked. I know the 3rd and 4th string line didn’t give him much time, but I was expecting him to look a little better going against 4th string DB’s. I’ve always liked Speilman, but I don’t see what they ever saw in that guy.

  17. Cassell led 2 decent scoring drives. Teddy was working from a diluted version of the playbook. It’s his first real game experience at the pro level. Whose careers have been defined by their first preseason game?

    Uh, that’s a FACT alright.

The Raiders have the fewest wins in the NFL in the last 10 seasons…

    tough to do actually when the Lions went 0 & 16 in 2008, 2 & 14 in 2009 and 3 & 13 in 2006…

But the Raiders managed to lose more than the Lions have from 2004 to 2013.

Oh, the Raiders have been LAST in attendance in 4 of the past 5 seasons too…

Amazing how losing the most games is tied to having the fewest fans show up huh?

  19. What? Bridgewater looked so-so, but that’s to be expected. Cassel put on a clinic. Not bad at all for the first outing.

  20. 5 fumbles, 2 picks, 112 men in the huddle!

    Wait for it….’I can’t believe what I’m seeing right here…why ponder passing…not detroit…’

As a saints fan and genuine admirer of the viking fan…love those guys. I digress….WHO DAT!
    XLIV CHAMPS!

  21. Yeah, sloppy game well the starters for the Vikings had an AWESOME series. It was their only series!! If you asked me if the Vikings starters played the whole game it would have been an absolute blowout.

  22. The game is on NFL Network replay right now if you faider fans wanna watch it again.

    LOL

I just watched the first qt on preseason.com, and it was pretty much what I expected.

Matt Scrub for the loss. That defense too, whoa. Gonna be a long year again for the fade. That was a below average Vikes team doing that to you with their and your starters.

  23. What Bridgewater needs is a lesson from the best viking ever…Brett Favre!

One of you purple horn hat dude’s ought to bring him that tape.

  24. If you have watched the Vikings the last 4yrs, I can promise tonight’s preseason was the best game plan they’ve had for yrs… Zim and Norv will make a impact, this will not be the same predictable team we’ve grown accustomed too. THANK GOD!

  25. I was at the game, Teddy made a play that shocked the stadium, but was called back on an illegal procedure on the backup TE. On the play he rolled right leaving a defender diving at air and fired a rocket about 20 yards for a first down. All of his plays were short passes to the sideline or screens, very vanilla. He looked poised and very good pocket awareness with the exception of the fumble play that Kahlil got.

Overall some good situations for him and some fm to evaluate. You can’t jump to a conclusion after a quarter of preseason football. Manning and Aikman stunk up an entire first season and they turned out pretty good. Ridiculous article.

  26. No one can compare to the future HOF quarterback who can’t hit the broad side of a barn.
Hey y’all respond to my troll comments I need some attention.

    I’m lonely,
    -Viking fan commenter

  27. The rest of the vikings posters are in their preseason form as well, hiding when things aren’t going well getting ready for the big disappearance come week 5. By the looks of it they are in regular season form already. Just need to give a shout out to Mr. 5 alias teddy we trust who guaranteed us how well baby hands would do.

  28. Yeah, i caught the highlight on sportscenter and they did say Cassel was efficient with the ones. I will also say this pre-season is garbage, and not much should be read into it. Remember, Detroit went 4-0 in the season they went 0-16. Ponder that thought.

  29. Ok I’m a Vikes fan, but here’s what I saw tonight:

Teddy easily evades pressure in the pocket when he sees it coming, and has a quick release when he’s figured out where to throw it. Arm strength wasn’t an issue at all, and looked better than I expected from the scouting reports. On the downside, took too long in his reads at times, and held on to the ball a bit to long. Overall not bad for a rookie, and outplayed Ponder by a mile.

The D line, which is supposed to be deep according to the local media, overall didn’t look as dominant as I hoped vs the Raiders. D backs looked better coached than last year. Made some nice plays, which happened about once last year.

  30. Dear commenters. PFT hasn’t mentioned Cassel at all this offseason yet you’re surprised that this whole deal was about Bridgewater.

Former Tom Brady backups have to win a decade of superbowls to get a compliment on this site. Brian Hoyer is next to be ignored during “Johnny football bowl” tomorrow.

“Play calls were conservative … ”

    ————————————————————

Isn’t that what Norv Turner is known for — and not necessarily in a good way?

  32. Man, the Raiders have done it again. Another total loser qb behind center…………………yet Raider Nation thinks Reggie is God and Oakland is going to the SB!

    Delusional.

  33. People say African American qb’s have it harder and face more scrutiny….according to this site, Bridgewater was “ok” going 6 for 13 for 49 yrds yet mallet was bad going 5 for 12 for 55 yrds, neither were good but mallet gets the worst of the reporting. Not a coincidence, remember when Wilson went 50% comp for 100 yards and 0 td against the saints in the playoffs…you couldn’t pay a sports outlet to talk about his bad game, then follows it up with a terrible 2nd half performance the next game that kap and the Seattle defense bailed Wilson out of and yet, no analyst talked about it.

  34. That high school stadium looks great on the television. Save the taxpayers some money. Just stay there. Not like you can draw more than 20 thousand fans anywhere anyway.

  35. lol, first pre-season game and every Monday morning coach has already made up their minds…

  36. As a Seahawk fan I’m not here to talk trash. I simply wanted to read the comments from the Viking trolls that troll all the Seahawk articles. To my surprise the entire thread ate actual Viking fans & i did not see 1 comment from any of the trolls, which confirms my suspicions. The guys that come trash on the Hawks aren’t legit fans of any team. They’re just negative miserable people that would rather spew hate than have something positive to say about their own team. So, i would like to say good luck to the ACTUAL fans & i hope your draft picks work out. The Vikings have a long & proud tradition it’s just too bad those other guys have colored my opinion.

  37. I find it hilarious how the Vikings fans were all saying dynasty with Teddy this year and how amazing Teddy is at practice and how sharp he is and now they’re saying “Well you have to remember he’s just a rookie” lol. It’s funny seeing them all try to compromise because he wasn’t perfect like they were all promising.

  38. Baby hands looked better than anyone thought. Worst QB of the draft by far. I guess he needs to go play more video games and make sure the media knows how much he is studying. lol

    Da Raiduhs,

    =======================

I doubt they’ll be as bad in 2014 as your Cowgirls. Tell Jerry, that the fans of the other 31 teams appreciate the job he’s doing.

  40. Teddy looked great for potential…Footwork, avoiding the rush at times in buying time, & faking hand offs to end-a-rounds or to backs. His mindset is in the right place but needs more experience at the NFL’s faster pace.
    He’ll be great though.

  41. Cassel takes the Vikings opening drive down the field and gets a 1 yard TD run.

Bridgewater takes the next drive down the field and gets a field goal.

Both QB’s get points with the first string and the haters conclude that they both suck? What the hell are you eating/drinking and/or smoking?

Also, you haters always complain when vikings fans post. But now you are ripping the same posters because they didn’t post?

    Get a life.

  42. Ha ha ha ha WHERE IS THE PFTPOET ha ha ha ha ha DYNASTY ha ha ha LOl what a pathetic franchise ha ha ha ha

  43. Too bad soooooo sad. I love to see the vikqueen fans twisting in the wind trying to put a happy face on their turd of a team.

  44. No comments from thepftpoet? That’s a first…

I’d be hiding, too, if I had run my mouth as much as he did this offseason

  45. Ponder looked terrible. Might have the weakest arm in the league. It may be in his best interests to NOT play anymore this preseason if he hopes to pick up with another team at all. What I saw from him last night — against 3rd string defenders — didn’t even look like a capable backup.

Teddy is REALLY short and small framed.

    The Raiders [still] stink.

    That is all.

  46. Its unfortunate for the good and level headed Viking posters to have to take the grief because of all the loud mouth boasting that has went on from the cast of misfits that are now hiding. Don’t get on us because we have been waiting for this moment with all the unrealistic expectations and just flat out childish and ridiculous posts we have heard leading up to this. Might I suggest that you join the masses who get on them because the posting on this article alone shows it comes from just about every fan base.

Remember Aaron Rodgers was heavily criticized in his first season as a starter for holding onto the ball too long and taking unnecessary sacks, and he turned out ok in the end!
    ————————————————-

Aaron threw for 28 tds and over 4000 yds in his first year as a starter. Don’t fool yourself he was good even then. There are fools that still criticize him for holding on to the ball too long.

  48. I’m not too concerned about Bridgewater at this point. They’ll clean up a lot of things by the next game and more after that, just like every team does every year. If he still looks like this when the regular season starts, then be concerned.

I would, however, be concerned about Christian Ponder right now. He is fighting to be the backup and quite possibly his football life and it appeared that was what was foremost in his mind as he played. He seemed to push things too much and play desperate which just led to bad decisions.

  49. Keep this all in perspective, 1st game of the preseason, your opponent is the Oakland Raiders and not only that, the 2nd and 3rd string of the Oakland Raiders, and then to come out and play just average?

Cassel is a journeyman 2nd string Qb and the other 31 teams would expect him to maybe fill in for a game or two if the starter went down so the fact that he is outplaying Bustwater is all you need to know about Minnesota’s 1st round pick at QB.

  50. After reading the gbtrolls & others biased comments, i decided to investigate ShAaron Rodgers 1st go. Here you go, gbtrolls:
“In his first NFL game, Rodgers completed two out of seven passes and was sacked twice. He continued to struggle through the preseason, before ending the preseason by converting two third downs and throwing a touchdown pass to tight end Ben Steele against the Tennessee Titans.”

  51. what game were you watching? i’d say Cassel looked pretty good. Are you looking for him to put up 300 yards in a few series?

Bridgewater looked fine, too. no problem on your assessment of Teddy, but Cassel looked pretty good to me.

  52. I thought Tarvaris Bridgewater looked pretty average, but with a little more work and practice, he probably will be able to perfect the 6 yard pass.

  53. The Headlines after this game shows how low the bar has been set and says it all:

“Vikings fans delirious over HOF type performance from Teddy in pre-season debut game!”

  54. I was at the game and can tell you that your comments on the quaterbacks isn’t real accurate. Cassel did just what he was supposed to. Teddy looked like a rookie, but definite potential. Ponder is still exactly what he was last year. Looks like we have a starter, a rookie that needs a bit more time and Ponder. First half of the first quarter was actually kind of fun to watch. Wouldn’t expect anything more from preseason game one, would you?

well I believe da raiduhs are still worse than the cowboys. the cowboys didn’t even play their starters in preseason game one.

  56. You can only be as good as the O line. 6 of 13 is not a starting QB by any stretch. But more important is what he did with the 6 completions. Lots of difference between check downs and screens and throws for 1st downs.

  57. Caught the replay on NFL network, did I eve watch the same name as Gantt? Bridgewater did OK, Cassel played well. The Raiders dropped a lot of passes. This article reminds me of movie reviews when I think what movie did this guy describe? Same thing here, I don’t think he actually watched the game.

  58. No clockwork is you trolls commenting on every single Vikings post and saying the exact same thing repeatedly.

  59. Rookie QB has the right to be bad. Can’t say for sure what Bridgewater will be in the league yet.

You misunderstood. Analyst do not put more scrutiny on African American players. It’s the fans in forums that go back to the Jim crow days who think a Black person doesn’t have the same mental IQ of White QB’s. Usually, the only place you are going to see the media put that kind of labeling on a Black QB’s is when supposed secret wonderlic tests are leaked to the media…

  61. Teddy look good, The first play was called back, But rolling out and throwing on the run against his body and completing it with zip as well as hitting the receiver in stride shows a lot about how good this kid is going to be, A lot of drop balls and penalty’s, It was hard for Teddy to get in a rhythm. Teddy will get better with each game he plays in.

  62. As a football fan, my thoughts are that Cassell looked like the Vikings best chance to win, Bridgewater would benifit from some learning time and should take at least half the season to get used to the offense. The Defense is going to be an issue for them, they would be lucky to go 8-8 this season but should not expect to be making a run this year. The vikings have a lot of pro-bowl caliber players… just in all the wrong positions for them to compete with the elite.

    As a Packers fan….

    HahAHAHAHAHA
