Schaub admits he fell short in Raiders debut

mattschaub AP

The Raiders’ offense was a mess in Friday night’s preseason opener at Minnesota, and quarterback Matt Schaub knows he’s going to get a large share of the blame.

Schaub played three series with Oakland’s first-string offense, and all three ended in punts, without a single first down.

“We went out and we didn’t play near to expectations or our standard and we need to go back and figure out how to play that way next week,” Schaub said after the game.

Schaub’s backup, second-round rookie Derek Carr, wasn’t much better. Carr threw an interception on his first series, and all the rest of his series ended in punts as well.

Not until third-string quarterback Matt McGloin came in did the Raiders start to move the ball. On his first series McGloin drove the Raiders into field goal range (although the kick was blocked), and McGloin later ran for a 10-yard touchdown to give the Raiders their only points of their 10-6 loss. (Oakland failed on a two-point conversion attempt after McGloin’s touchdown.)

Raiders coach Dennis Allen admitted his team didn’t look good.

Disappointed in the way that we played. I thought we’d come out and be sharper than that and execute better than that,” Allen said.

The Raiders need to execute better than they did on Friday night.

Taking ownership of fault is a lot better than pointing fingers and placing blame on others.

Watched this game and the Raiders looked really bad. I know it’s only the 1st preseason game but wouldn’t be surprised if they are picking 1st in next year’s draft. I just don’t know what they’re doing. Reggie McKenzie comes from GB who builds with almost entirely young players and here he spends all the cap money on 30 plus year old guys like Schaub, Tuck, James Jones, etc.

Anything other than 1 pick-6 would be considered a let down from Schaub

You literally have three people competing for the starting QB job in Oakland. When you have three QBs, you have no QBs.

    Give me a break….

Schaub, Jones, MJD, Penn, Howard….all new to the team and playing in it’s first live action and they should be world beaters right out the gate? Come on. It wasn’t pretty by any means and I did expect a little better but I’m certainly not going to write off Schaub or this offense after 3 series in the first preseason game.

Foles looked like garbage last night…where’s the “good thing they drafted Barkely” article?

  13. kikmor says: Aug 9, 2014 8:43 AM

So Schaub has to throw the ball and catch it as well? The receivers didn’t help.

  15. raiderinva says: Aug 9, 2014 8:51 AM

Some teams are looking at preseason with the goal of just staying healthy. They know maybe 80% of the starters and are looking to refine execution of the playbook.

The Raiders schedule is pure evil and completely brutal. To be unable to execute a first down in the preseason against another struggling franchise screams another painful season.

Who knows? Could be talking about David Carr and Brady Quinn by the 14 week.

  16. 805radr says: Aug 9, 2014 8:54 AM

The O line needs a little time to solidify, 4 new starters on the unit. I would expect this to tighten up towards the end of preseason. Not all Schaub’s fault but way to own up!

  17. McFaddensPulledHammy says: Aug 9, 2014 8:55 AM

Here’s a list of Schaub’s faults last night:

    Drive 1
Menalik Watson false start on the first play
Andre Holmes dropped pass on third down

    Drive 2
Brian Leonhardt facemask penalty on the first play
Mychal Rivera dropped pass on third down

    Drive 3
Holding on third down to negate a first down

    Yeah, Schaub sucked.

Receivers had rock hands, defensive line got pushed around, and the starting corners looked like my flag football team corners.

  18. bigwinintx says: Aug 9, 2014 8:55 AM

Well Raider fans, get ready for “Field Goal Range Offense”, cause with Matt Schaub under center, it’s pretty much what you’re gonna get!

I can’t count as to how many times a broken run or a busted secondary coverage got us into the Red Zone, only to limp away with a 3 point attempt…
    Frustrating?
Just wait and see HOW frustrating it really is!

My concern is the coverage’s we were playing. Oh to all the Denver fans that want to talk crap, your team has been good for a while and we have been bad for a while. What you have to realize is the Raiders were an unmitigated disaster. Mckenzie had to totally clean house. Therefore they are just now truly starting to rebuild. They had no players whatsoever so they had to sign any and all NFL caliber players they could. As well as using a certain amount of cap space they have to spend a certain percentage of the cap in order to not get penalized. This is basically a stabilization yr. Now Reggie can begin to build through the draft and keep our young players like they do in Green Bay. We need patience RAIDERS ON THE RISE!!!!!!!

  43. demolition510 says: Aug 9, 2014 10:08 AM

Schaub has no zip on his passes. His accuracy, anticipation and decision making better make up for it.

How about adding to the story that Carr’s interception was a tipped pass? Sure the throw was off, but it gives a better idea of what happened.

I like MM. He’d be given more of a chance if he was taller. He’s a fighter though.

  44. laserw says: Aug 9, 2014 10:08 AM

Don’t worry Raiders’ fans … RGME will be such a disaster in Washington this year that you’ll have him as your starting QB. This clown will sink the Redskins so that they can draft a real pro-style QB in the first round without mortgaging their future – and they’ll dump him so quickly you’ll get him for maybe a fifth round pick.

RGME’s weak play in the first preseason game instills no confidence he’ll ever pull his head out of his backside.

  45. jimthebuilder27 says: Aug 9, 2014 10:16 AM

  49. bworacle says: Aug 9, 2014 10:40 AM

As a Texans fan I saw Schaub take the blame plenty but that didn’t help him play better. Good luck with that Raiders fans…be prepared for more apologies. When your team hasn’t had a winning season in like 100 years and your playoff drought is just as long, YOU are the ones that really need to shut up. There was ONE team in the NFL that finished better than the Broncos last year. Admit it, you’d kill to be able to have your sorry CFL team even sniff the playoffs, much less make it to the big show. Half of your fan base is calling for the Raiders to make it to the playoffs simply because your in-over-his-head GM signed a bunch of over the hill free agents. YOU really need to shut up! And don’t worry, I’m sure it’ll be another Raider sweep this year for the Broncos, so they can get closer to that all time head to head record (since THAT’S so important). Maybe your team might be good enough this year to require our starting QB to play all 4 quarters this time.

Michael Smith’s article is a bit off target. “Schaub’s backup, second-round rookie Derek Carr, wasn’t much better. Carr threw an interception on his first series, and all the rest of his series ended in punts as well.” Let’s see, Shaub was 3-7 for 21 yards. Carr was 10-16 for 74 yards. The INT was a ball that should have been caught, it hit the backs hands. From what I saw he only threw one bad ball (a slant) and DMoore caught that one behind him. Both Carr and Bridgewater need time with the 1st teams.

  66. jmc8888 says: Aug 9, 2014 12:57 PM

Schaub was not a wise choice. They would have been better off keeping Pryor, but there are just so many things wrong with the Raiders.

Reggie McKenzie has made awful moves. He picked up a few decent guys later in FA, the problem was, he had the most space, and needed a bunch of starters and he ended up getting retread marginal starter after retread marginal starter.

Just about every GM knows you need to get better with youth. I.E. you get guys who are starting to enter their prime, and can still improve, yet are good already. You don’t want to sign very many 30+ year old guys. A guy or two if you’re close and they’re still good, fine. But you don’t rebuild by signing a bunch of has been’s.

That’s what Reggie did. He got has been, injury prone guys and signed them to some fairly crazy contracts. Some of the contracts weren’t that bad, but still…these guys won’t improve, and were overpaid. They are on the way down, and most were never very good to begin with.

This is the team that signed a mediocre, injury prone player (Roger Saffold) to almost twice his worth, and wanted to play him out of position (well out of his best position), and then voided the contract because everyone laughed at the size of the contract. He subsequently went back to the Rams and got paid about half as much.

Matt Schaub is not a good QB. He was never good.

He was decent at his best, in his past, with a ton of great players around him. But Matt Schaub is what held the Texans back.

But even with all those great players, he played like dog excrement last year. Now he’s on a team with far, far less talent. The Raiders don’t have an Arians or Andre Johnson. They lost their LT in free agency. So I really struggle to see a guy who was by far the worse QB in the league last year with quality talent around him, can suddenly become even mediocre with almost no proven talent around him.

Schaub can almost certainly play a bit better then last year, but with the crappier cast around him, it surely can’t be much better.

The problem is, a bit better, is still far from even being mediocre, and in the NFL, a mediocre QB still means struggling for an 8-8 record.

What is a team’s long term future look like when a GM is filling up the cap space unwisely with over the hill, injury prone, never good to begin with players?

Then you have Mark Davis, an idiot owner who can only channel the worst aspects of his father, without any of his greatness, at least so far saying….let’s look into moving! That’ll turn us around. Let’s screw the A’s so we can try to get a new stadium, even though we were offered a chance to be in the new 49ers one. Let’s look to moving to San Antonio.

How about spending that time focusing on improving your product instead Mark? Or asking what the hell your GM is doing?

The Raiders aren’t going anywhere fast, and the actions of their GM and owner are ensuring that.

I feel so bad for my friend who has had to endure the failure of the Raiders this past decade. It surely isn’t ending anytime soon.

welcome to the raiders Matt….you get three posssesions, and the first two, you do not even get a chance to have a first and ten, and on your final third and final drive, you get a 3rd down with 6 to go, and you throw a nice 16 yard completion, only for the refs to call it back…….all done and said give props to the vikings in the first pre season game who only had one call against them, until less than 4 minutes to go where the refs called 4 meanining less calls against them.

On their one penalty which resulted in a third down play which was an incomplete pass the refs called defensive holding on the raiders , which gave the vikings their 3rd first down by penalty of the night.

All done and said raiders had 13 penalties to the vikings 1, until the refs tried some make up calls in the closing minutes.. All I want to see is if the vikings have more than one penalty next week.

Its going to take some time for Schaub to gain chemistry with the WR’s but theres definitely talent out there. Jones, Streeter, and Moore are certainly more than “serviceable”. They got much better on both sides of the ball with their offseason acquisitions! Trust me you got championship pedigree in Tuck, Jones, Woodley, and Woodson they will help teach the young guys a winning culture.

    This doesn’t happen overnight!

The Vikes defense is a joke. The fade is just that bad. It’s everything we all told you fans to expect. The washed up vet route has never and will never work. 3-13 best case with this schedule.

Kinda WEIRD actually. All summer long, RNation tellimg us how good they gonna be…………….so like, where is the beef?

Lets have a show of hands. Who amongst you honestly thought the Raiders were going to the show?

Sorry boys, after being dialed up by every team you play, you kids need some time on the couch,

  83. platinumraider32 says: Aug 9, 2014 6:33 PM

Isn’t it preseason??? Isn’t this the time you evaluate talent on your roster???? So if the Raiders beat tha hell outta Vikings, what??? Now they ready for the big time??? I think not.

Put this on record. Carrie and Chekwa replace the current starting DB’s. Chekwa is improving every year and Carrie is looking like it’s just a matter of time, he looked good for the 1st time.

Superbowl…no, playoffs….probably not. Easy out like past years???? Think again. This team finally has actual depth, and after the 1st TD, the “D” settle down and shut the door. Don’t sleep on McGloin, I liked him last year and he has “pocket presence”, he can run the offense.

    Stay tuned………………….

Talk to me Nation, talk to me?

Is Reggie still your GOD? Are the Raiders still a SB team as professed here last week?

Dudes, where are the little boys that cant back their play? Lets take a quick look at your recent qb history:

Aaron Brooks, Andrew Walter, Kerry Collins, Rick Mirer, RIch Gannon, Todd Marinovich, Steve Beuerlein, Billy Joe Hobert; Bobby Hoying; Wade Wilson, Marc Wilson, Vince Evans, David Klinger, Rusty Hilger, Donald Hollis, Tui, Jeff George, Jim Plunkett, Dan Pastorini, Rusty Hilger, Jay Schroeder, Donald Hollis, Jbust, Duante Culpepper, Josh McCown, Hoss, Grosskowsi, Charlie Fried, Campbell, Boller, Palmer, Flynn, McGroin, Pryor, Schnaub……………….sigh.

Maybe some century you’ll get it right!

Unbelievable the idiotic comments on this post. You losers need to do something more with your time. It’s one preseason game you morons! Are the raiders going to the Super Bowl? Of course not! Will they be competitive and win more games than last year? Yes they will. Can’t wait for the real season to start to shut all you losers up.

Penalties are what really pissed me off last night. Something that’s plague this team for years. That’s one of the few very coachable and fixable problems that DA is unable to fix. Sorry, but RM revamped the team…good! Yet failed to replace a huge part of this team…Dennis Allen! At this point, I’d make the change now, right in camp. Keep the staff, bring in a Billick or Mariucci (who would have fun with the vets in this team) and let a “man” led “men”. DA is a coordinator at best, a poor man version of Josh McDaniel’s…at least he’s got some fire in the belly!

Hang tough Raider Nation. The Texicans are willing to trade Patrick Fitzryan/Ryan Fitzpatrick for a 5th round draft pick…in October, as long as the Raiders take Affirmative Action Rick Smith as their GM.

Week two will be awesome, with the Texicans winning a barn burner in Oakland…9-6 with 5 fieldgoals kicked and a combined, record-breaking 290 yards in penalities.

I doubt whoever wrote this actually seen the game. I never ever in my life have seen a game so obviously rigged..
Every time The Raiders got a 1st down FLAG, Everytime Vikings failed on 3rd down..FLAG 1 ST DOWN VIKINGS.
I don’t know if The Refs had money on the game thinking nobody would care or notice since it was pre season or if The NFL just really wanted The Vikings to win since it was their home opener in their temp stadium and wanted to lighten the mood there..
It was very obvious something was up, I watched and listen to BOTH teams broadcast and announcers said the exact same thing that there was bizarre flags being thrown that were HIGHLY questionable. Plunket went as far as actually saying “It’s like the refs WANT the Vikings to win this meaningless game very badly”
Shaubs numbers would of been great if EVERY time he converted a 3rd down there was not a flag.
Raiders would of blown out the vikings by 30 points if the Refs called the game fairly..

  95. packofoneinc says: Aug 10, 2014 9:37 PM

What does Schaub have to take responsibility for?

Dropped passes that hit his WR’s in the hands?

Dumb Penalties that negated good plays?

He played as well as he could given the circumstances.

Haters gonna hate. Keep it up, you’re going to look awfully stupid when the season starts.

  96. psj3809 says: Aug 11, 2014 5:41 AM

Not great but hell its preseason. Theres been times Oaklands been 4-0 or 3-1 in preseason and then they’re 5-11 in the regular season.

During one of Grudens years they were 0-4 in preseason.

Not worried (yet) but disappointing though

  97. jjackwagon says: Aug 11, 2014 4:24 PM

Your team loses in the preseason, Raider fan is quick to tell you how bad they suck.

Raiders lose in preseason, Raider fan plays it off as “just a preseason game”.

You can save all that. I’m just a fan, not one of those jag-offs that believe a win-loss record is a measure of self-worth. Believe me, I wasn’t embarrassed for you when the Chiefs went 2-14 not so long ago, and you were done posting for the season in November.
