Sean Spence starting for Steelers with Ryan Shazier out

Steelers fans will have to wait for their first look at first-round pick Ryan Shazier in game action.

Shazier was bothered by a knee injury in practice last week and the Steelers announced that he won’t play against the Giants on Saturday night. There haven’t been any signs from the Steelers that they are terribly worried about Shazier, who looks set for a big enough role that risking further injury in a preseason game doesn’t make much sense.

Shazier’s absence opens the door for the next step in Sean Spence’s remarkable comeback from a severe knee injury suffered in the 2012 preseason. Spence has been rehabbing since suffering an injury that could have ended his career and all that work will pay off with a start at linebacker in Shazier’s place.

It’s not Shazier, but it’s not bad for an August Saturday night.

The injury Spence battled back from was pretty nasty. HUGE credit to Spence — total stud to grind his ass back after what he suffered.

I doubt most people remember this guy, but I’m glad he’s made a recovery. His cleat got stuck in the turf and everything below the knee stopped while everything above it kept going. Really nasty.

He actually looked good. Super stoked to see this guy on the field playing ball. What a hard worker this cat is. He laid a good hit on someone too on a running play, had a couple nice tackles.

“not bad for an August Saturday night”??? If it wasn’t for his injury this guy would have been a starter a long time ago…and probably pretty darn good.

Amazing he could even return to play at all let alone at the level he showed Saturday. Comeback player of the year!
