Martellus Bennett returns to Bears camp

Martellus Bennett AP

When the Bears suspended tight end Martellus Bennett for conduct detrimental to the team last week after he slammed cornerback Kyle Fuller to the ground, it came with an indefinite length.

It wound up being a five-day ban as Bennett made his return to Bears camp on Sunday. Coach Marc Trestman said last week that there would be an open dialogue with Bennett before he returned to work and Bennett confirmed that he spoke with the coach without divulging the content of their conversations. He also didn’t discuss the conditions the team imposed before he’d be permitted back at practice beyond saying that he did everything the team asked “extremely well.”

“Everything in life is about learning lessons. Whatever situation you’re going on through life, you always learn from it. Whether it’s good or bad, there’s always a lesson or moral to the story,” Bennett said, via the Chicago Tribune. “I think I could have handled the situation differently. We could talk about it right now, but, really, any way differently from what I did.”

Assuming there are no further flare-ups, the Bears should have their 65-catch tight end in the lineup come September while also making Trestman’s point about the need to be trusting and respectful of your teammates.

Good to see the coach make a statement and aid in the growth and development of the player and team. Everyone will be better because of this.

Couple of days off from practice when you know you are going to be the starter anyway, doesn’t seen like much punishment to me. Should’ve just increased the fine.

Miller tearing it up in PS game 1 might have helped him see that he is not the franchise savior

I hope Marty has moved on from this and doesn’t hold a grudge, the last thing we need is to lose a game because a grown adult can’t control himself.

I still like you Marty, but don’t bring that crap to our team again, thanks!

His backup caught 2 TDs against the Eagles, from 2 different QBs. If Bennett smart — which by all indications he is, despite his often bizarre behavior — he’ll see that Trestman has something going that is worth being a part of, and he’ll be on board with that program going forward.

The Cowboys moved on from Marty years ago. Just don’t know how many second chances this guy gets. Not too many more I’m guessing.

Did a Bills fan really just talk smack about the Bears?!?! The Bears had the second best scoring offense in the league last year, good luck with that.

…..still laughing, the Bills Defense….so scary, lmao!!

  15. bassplucker says: Aug 10, 2014 5:42 PM

Bears had almost 500 yds of offense in their first preseason game, almost 400 of those by air. Their 4 QBs combined had a passer rating north of 100. Just sayin.

Marty is not overly bright, very lazy, and much to full of himself. Had everything going for him with Dallas then threw it all away

  17. purpleguy says: Aug 10, 2014 7:07 PM

The suspension had to be about more than just that fight, which didn’t seem all that bad.

Oh REALLY calvin? Let’s have a conversation then: When was the last time the Bears genuinely TOOK the NFCN? 2006 by my count. That’s a LONG time ago. Every stinking year Packers fans put up with Bears fans (and Vikings fans) saying “THIS IS OUR YEAR. WE’LL TAKE DOWN GB BECAUSE OF (insert lame reasoning here)!”

Guess what dude – you haven’t beaten GB in a game that mattered without a serious fluke in almost a decade. Week 1 of 2006 by my memory.

    1. Bears “win” in game 1 of 2013 – ARod’s injury. Nuff said.

    2. Bears “win” in game 1 of 2010 – 21 penalty fest by GB. And you still barely “won.”

    3. 2008 – 20-17 Bears. And plus – Who cares about that game. Both teams sucked.

    4. 2007 game 2: The “wind” game in soldier field. Kind of a big advantage to have to only defend against Ryan Grant and not a resurgent BF huh?

And…we’re at 2006. So – you’ve beaten GB 4 times total (none of them repeatable) since 2006. And you REALLY think that Chicago is going to upend ARod and an equally improved defense that you are boasting? SMH.

Like I said… August is silly season for Bears fans. Then by week 6 – silence.

Enjoy it while it lasts ladies.

This guy is a wagon jumper fair weather Packer fan, don’t waste your time with him True Packer fans have mutual respect for the Bears.

txbearmeat know VERY little about the history and tradition of NFL football.

Bears lead the Packers overall 93-89 in meetings(including playoffs).

Bears have the most wins: 730

Bears have the higest winning %: .575

Bears have most combined wins: 747

Bears have higest winning % overall: .573

Go suck on your Lombardi txbearmeat….you don’t know anything about the NFL.

Goal achieved. Thanks for the laughs Calvin. I was simply pointing out the fact that GB has owned CHI for the past 10 (really past 25) years. You know when someone changes the subject that your point has struck home

PS: I lived through the 80s Packers. I am no bandwagon jumper.

    ———————————————————————–

He threw nothing away. He got out of the dump that is texass and keeps getting paid more every year.

He is just like all the others. Just can’t wait to get away from the cowpanzy’s and their totally inept ownership.

Players fake injuries, retire and do anything they can to get away from that team. Dont blame the players blame they ownership that makes it constantly happen.

  24. rl7911 says: Aug 11, 2014 9:20 AM

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Bennett get cut next year, they know he’s a cancer in the locker room, they just don’t have any other options at TE. Emery tried to build a team through FA and he got players teams didn’t want due to character issues. I see this blowing up in their face this year, it’s not looking good.

Bears won the NFC North in 2010 there big guy. I’m not going to blow smoke here, to me The Bears have to prove themselves. They have had 3 great season starts in a row (2011-2013) and then the wheels fell off each time, missing the playoffs by 1 game each year. There is only 1 team in Chicago that I have tons of pre-season expectations for and that’s The Blackhawks
