The Jets lost one cornerback for the season on Sunday, but it looks like Dee Milliner avoided the same fate as third-round pick Dexter McDougle.

McDougle tore his ACL, but Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that tests of Milliner’s ankle show a high ankle sprain that will keep him out for weeks as opposed to months. Jets coach Rex Ryan suggested this outcome during his Sunday press conference when he said that Milliner rolled the ankle rather than injuring it in a way that leads to broken bones.

Still, Milliner will be out for a few weeks at least and that will both interfere with his continued development and self-professed status as the top corner in the league as well as the Jets’ efforts to identify their top contributors in the secondary. Dimitri Patterson missed Sunday’s practice with calf and ankle injuries and played poorly last Thursday night, making for even deeper issues at corner for Ryan and company to sort through.

That’s led them to reach out to Asante Samuel, although Mehta reports that it is unlikely that they will sign the veteran at this time. That could change if things take another bad turn in the coming days, however.
