Texans sticking with Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starter

Ryan Fitzpatrick AP

If Texans coach Bill O’Brien left the door open on his quarterback rotation yesterday, he closed it today.

According to Brian Smith of the Houston Chronicle, O’Brien had a one-word answer when asked if Ryan Fitzpatrick would remain the starter.

Yes,” was the one, which represents half the number of interceptions Fitzpatrick threw in the preseason opener.

O’Brien said that rookie Tom Savage and holdover Case Keenum would continue to compete for the backup job.

That’s not necessarily good news for the Texans, as their depth chart at quarterback continues to resemble that one item on the grocery list you forgot to cross off, which wrecks an otherwise good recipe.

They want to make sure they have the first pick next year as well …. How they think Fitzpatrick is gonna be an upgrade from what they had. #PoorTexans

I’m pretty sure Tebow would do better then Fitzpatrick and his hobo beard..

PICTURE: That is what Chewbacca looks like when he shaves around his eyes and upper cheeks

Easy to see why Andre Johnson is so frustrated. He’s the really nice hood ornament on a hoopty.

The headline should’ve actually read “another ex-Belichick assistant failing because of ego.”

  6. uwsptke says: Aug 11, 2014 12:42 PM

And if he fails again, he’ll be released back into the wild apparently.

  7. harrisonhits2 says: Aug 11, 2014 12:44 PM

The Texans were fated for a lousy, rebuilding kind of season this year anyway. Next year O’Brien will draft a QB he wants.

  8. bubbybrisket says: Aug 11, 2014 12:47 PM

Ryan Fitzpatrick managed to defraud the Bills out of $59 million and now he’s doing it to the Texans.

This man needs to be stopped!

  9. gayforbrady says: Aug 11, 2014 12:47 PM

    Just get mallett.

What good is a wide receiver if the quarterback can’t get him the ball.

  10. 1pwrightt says: Aug 11, 2014 12:55 PM

The Cardinals 20th pick in the fourth round (120th overall) Logan Thomas looked better then Fitzpatrick.

  11. shayeezy says: Aug 11, 2014 12:59 PM

feel genuinely sorry for texans players and fans. it’s not like fitzpatrick was their last ditch option, either – they had the whole offseason and the #1 pick, and he was the best they could muster. o’brien is off to a terrible start.

  12. surfinbird1 says: Aug 11, 2014 1:05 PM

Isn’t the qb the most important player on a team. Why wouldn’t you make it a top priority to get a decent one during the off season. Trade if you half to. I guess it only proves again if you work for Belichick it doesn’t mean you’ll be a Belichick.

  13. fordmandalay says: Aug 11, 2014 1:14 PM

Parity is gone – there’s gonna be an AWFUL lot of 2-14 teams this season.

    Drafting Winston

  15. 34defense2014 says: Aug 11, 2014 1:22 PM

They should have traded out of the first pick and drafted a QB. But, maybe the plane is they are going to pick one next year? The rebuilding process has started and it’s going to be 2 or 3 years before they are on the top again. So I guess the future looks pretty good after all!

  16. bworacle says: Aug 11, 2014 1:32 PM

At least we’ll be able to pick another defensive player #1 overall in next year’s draft (again)

  17. valentino8100 says: Aug 11, 2014 1:38 PM

    Should have drafted a QB.

  18. uglydingo says: Aug 11, 2014 1:45 PM

The Texans should never complain about not having a decent QB this season. They had the first pick in the Draft and elected to go for a DE. And with their 2nd round pick they preferred a Guard.
Conscious decisions were made to address other needs. Even Matt Schaub was jettisoned and has ended up starting in Oakland.
No whining and moaning if Fitzpatrick fails, there were many other opportunities to upgrade. Bill O’Brien lives with the consequences.

If it was Suck for Luck, I’m thinking this is Malaise for Jamais?

  20. elsantos2014 says: Aug 11, 2014 1:46 PM

They should be calling the Redskins about Kirk Cousins though I wouldn’t give up more than a 3rd round pick and I doubt the Redskins are going to let their best QB go for less than a 2nd.

  21. peytons5head says: Aug 11, 2014 1:48 PM

The sad part is that he is best QB in Texans history

  22. ragnarthemagnificent says: Aug 11, 2014 1:50 PM

I was/am kind of rooting for Fitzpatrick after he fell so far off the map since the Bills were doing well. But that performance was awful. Why not pick up Josh Freeman or someone and just let them give it a try?

  23. wisconsinhillfolk says: Aug 11, 2014 1:55 PM

    Hilarious!

  24. coltsreign says: Aug 11, 2014 1:55 PM

    The texans didnt need clowney.
Clowney is worthy of a 1st rounder but not in this case.
    QB is wehere its at

  25. natelan says: Aug 11, 2014 2:06 PM

I don’t understand the hate. Fitzpatrick is a decent QB. Serviceable at the very least.

  26. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Aug 11, 2014 2:28 PM

Ryan is pretty much their best option at this point which is not a good sign. I was surprised they didn’t address the QB situation in the draft. Instead drafting a DE for a 3-4 defense with the top pick.

  27. purpleguy says: Aug 11, 2014 2:28 PM

Well, the guy can at least grow a hell of a beard.

  28. dalcow4 says: Aug 11, 2014 2:36 PM

The Texans are gunning for the #1 pick next year– where they will pick a QB not as good as Blake Bortles…

  29. owentoo says: Aug 11, 2014 2:53 PM

They couldn’t get a guy with teeth?

  30. jpaq68 says: Aug 11, 2014 3:09 PM

The burning question remains: Will Buffalo’s starting quarterback EJ Manuel gift wrap the number one pick in next years draft to the Browns or will Buffalo’s former starting QB steal it away from them?

  31. casualmalexlfan says: Aug 11, 2014 3:43 PM

O’Brien is going to be so fired once people realize that the Texans never actually signed Fitzpatrick and instead just chose to dress up that homeless man that told Jimmy Haslam to draft Manziel as a QB.

  32. jacoburris says: Aug 11, 2014 4:42 PM

The sad element for this team is can they ever pull themselves out of despair or is an NFL team in Houston cursed. The Oilers tried and failed. You wouldn’t understand unless you were living there at that time.

I saw absolutely zero emotion Saturday from the Texan players, even JJ. The dude that O’Brien hired as defensive coordinator is puzzling, they say he is a great coach, I didn’t see it in Cleveland and it was missing in action Saturday. Bad mistake to release Wade Phillips.

Come on NBA and the Spurs.

  33. tommyribs says: Aug 11, 2014 4:48 PM

they should call Snyder and ask what the Price is for Cousins.

If it is a #2 or a #3, they should strongly consider it.

  34. mtgman2004 says: Aug 11, 2014 6:18 PM

Why did we get one of the the inbreeds from Duck Dynasty and think he could play quarterback? In my 46 years of existence on this earth have I never seen a coach call such bad offensive plays for an entire game on any level of football.

  35. sirdrinksalot says: Aug 11, 2014 7:14 PM

    That stupid beard.

  36. wallabear says: Aug 11, 2014 8:02 PM

Bill O’Brien had better hope there’s an open Coordinator position available, as of January 2015, because he is surely going to need one (evil laugh)
