49ers remove Ian Williams from PUP list

Ian Williams AP

Nearly 11 months after he suffered a broken leg in a loss at Seattle, 49ers nose tackle Ian Williams has been cleared to return to the practice field.

The club announced Tuesday that the 24-year-old Williams has been taken off the active/physically unable to perform list.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, Williams underwent four surgical procedures on his injured leg. A fourth-year pro from Notre Dame, Williams suffered the injury in his first career regular season start.

By activating Williams, the Niners do not gain a roster spot, as he already counted against the 90-player limit. However, now Williams can start to get the on-field work he needs after almost a year away.

Now everyone can quit freaking out about Glenn Dorsey getting hurt.

  5. allidoiswin55 says: Aug 12, 2014 5:28 PM

Good to see the guy back he’s a good player and helps dissolve some depth issues with Dorsey being hurt . The play he was injured on was legal and a part of many teams offensive schemes . Even still that play is legal if the linemen doesn’t roll after contact which he didn’t . As a hawks fan glad to see this guy back out their he deserves this opportunity .

    * side note I am really starting to not understand how so many players are coming back from knee injuries and torn acls and ligaments so damn fast . Modern medicine implies Drugs if you ask me and their is not a Chance in hell some of these “miracle” recoveries are not from HGH . Were seeing 6mo recoveries . The thing that takes the longest in recovery is exactly that ,the “time of recovery” you can not speed up rest and HGH is the only thing that will help this . And is why fat out of shape baseball pitchers were caught in HGH “for recovery” . Just odd might as well legalize it if it’s helping or test for it for transparency .

  6. RegisHawk says: Aug 12, 2014 5:35 PM

They won’t legalize it. What they will do is drag out the negotiations on testing for it until after Adrian Peterson retires and doesn’t need it any more.

Was excited to see this guy last year, Dorsey filled in and did a great job, if Ian is healthy he should be an improvement!

  8. goldrush94 says: Aug 12, 2014 5:42 PM

Too much is made of the Niners’ injuries. This team is so deep and talented at almost every position that if they stay in the playoff hunt by the time Bowman and Aldon return, they can get hot at the right time. My concern is the young secondary. But if the D-line and OLBs can generate pass rush, it’ll make take a lot of pressure off the secondary. They have as good a shot as anyone this year. That said, Arizona, St.Louis are no cakewalk. Unlike much of the 90s when the Niners breezed through the NFC west, if they can get out of this division, they’ll be playoff tested going into the playoffs. Go Niners!

Favorite news of the day. This kid is such an enigma, I can’t wait to see him get to work. The organization thinks highly of him, quietly extending him before last season because they know they found a starter. He should be hungry to prove to everyone and himself what he can do. I really wanted him and big Dorsey both to play, I was looking forward to seeing them work off each other. Go 49ers!!

Niner are “so deep and talented at almost every position”…except QB, that is. Gabbert 1.7.

The last 3 trips north for the Niners have resulted in cheap shots from Renton Seahawk players at 49ers knees:

-Mario Mannigham was viciously attacked at knee-level by LeRoy Hill
-Ian Williams getting CUT blocked with the replay clearly showing intent to injure by JR Sweezy.
-Navarro Bowman was inured by friendly fire but the popcorn incident will go down in history as one of Seattle’s most classless fan moments in history.

The facts are, Seattle succeeded in purposely injuring and thinning the 49ers troops. This is why people like myself cannot stand the site of Pete Carroll and his spouse-abusing O-line coach Tom “boom boom” Cable.

They are straight up dirty cheats. I hate them with a passion

Glad to hear Ian is back. Dirty seahawk players. o linemen rolling around like dirty dogs. No more clipping dl who are already engaged with another o linemen.

Watch the video genius. Your safety Reid came flying in and caused the injury to Bowman

^^ I think that is the definition of “friendly fire”?

Anyways, nice to see Hawk fans wishing Ian the best. Nobody likes to see injuries I don’t care who you root for.

Still amazes me to see so many (unworthy) seahawk fans troll Niners’ articles so hard. Insecure much? You won the SB, act like you’ve been there before…oh wait, you haven’t!

pretty sure thats what that whole “friendly fire” comment about

Glad to see Ian back. Will be glad to see the best linebacker (Bowman) back when he’s healthy, too.

  19. seatownballers says: Aug 12, 2014 9:30 PM

Then why are you bringing up the bowman injury? It’s a winner thread talking about the hawks, yet the bowman incident is brought up. Prepare for another disappointing playoffs, like the last 3 in a row. No rings since the salary cap

  20. winninaintsinnin says: Aug 12, 2014 9:43 PM

Love how SC fans declare “little brother syndrome” when Hawks respond to their accusations but take up half the posts on Lynch’s thread.

I’d say to act like you’d been there but let’s face it, most of you weren’t alive when the Niners last won.

Time to go rip JR Sweezy’s leg from his body and beat Tom Cable and Pete Carrol over the head with it.

  22. 64post says: Aug 13, 2014 1:07 AM

    J. R Sweazy, rolling up on a D lineman’s legs at a stadium near you.
This is the type of thing Carroll has his players do to get an edge.

Sweazy has a serious close fist shot coming from Ian, 15 yards or ejection aside. Sweazy really should have been banned until Williams made it back to the field.

  23. seahonky says: Aug 13, 2014 1:52 AM

Ya know who threw the popcorn? 49er fans. 49er fans were above the tunnel. Classy fans, huh? How do I know? I was there.

  24. allidoiswin55 says: Aug 13, 2014 2:56 AM

No “fans” threw popcorn on Bowman “A” fan threw popcorn then someone told them to cut the sh*t! We don’t get down with that crap up here, especially on the best MLB in football!

Also you’ve clearly never played high level football and possibly not even HS. Cut and crawl is no less a football move then a rb doing a spin . It happens and is practiced and taught daily . Dirty play implies intent to hurt , the intent was to get his big( but talented ) a$$ to the ground not hurt him . The Seahawks have dominated the niners at home why would they need to cheat and injure players .

The manningham play resulted in a clean and clear fumble recovery . Good defenses swarm the ball and strip , YOU should know this being a niner fan . Calling out cheaters for every unfortunate circumstance is super weak sauce and makes you look sorry!

The rule changed that you cannot cut block and roll , (cut blocks are still legal )that doesn’t mean all of the ones before were illegal or we can say anyone whose ever done one is cheating . If that’s your sorry logic Ronnie Lott would not be in the hall of fame bc he was one of my favorite safeties of all time but he was the biggest head hunter in football for nearly a decade made amazing hits ,knockout hits . After the rule change it would Make a lot of his plays illegal and causing suspensions now . Does a rule change mean he’s a cheater and cheated to the HOF . Based on your logic he did cheat right ! Obviously he didn’t! Same with cut blocks .

You embarrass niner nation with that crap just keep it logical and stop whining . Nothing but respect on here for Williams from hawks fans no need to call out anyone especially when you end up crying like a baby over spilled milk!

Many of us were alive when the 49ers bagged our 5th ring. I’m just old enough to remember the 1st as well. You should probably stop using that “what have you done lately” line of trash talk because very soon 2012 will be a distant but cherished memory, and, when it is your trash talking is going to begin with the phrase – remember when? Our past victories define our organizations and are a source of pride. You will understand this as you watch your team go from best to worst as we did. This will happen sooner than later as free agency devours your players and coaches. Very soon all you will have is 2012.

  27. shooter28 says: Aug 13, 2014 9:27 PM

I just dont see SFs defense being very good this season , they have to , many holes. Losing Dorsey is HUGE, even with getting William back. Williams is a rookie basically n could easily boost, and ones thimgs for sure n that is he will be going thru rookie growing pains. Dorsey is a much better NT.

Our secondary is terrible. Our idiotic front office let a top 10 ranked SS go, for an aging veteran whos lost more than a few steps in A. Bethea. Via pro football focus Bethea ranked 73rd in coverage out of 86 overall, and overall he ranked 50th out of 86. We let both are starting CBs go and are depending on career backups I have no faith in , guys who are true #1CBs like T. Brock n C. Culliver, who is coming off a ACL & could be suspended, and I saved the best for last, CAREER BUST K. Cook as well.

We are also without our top ILB for this season in Bowman n his replacment Borland looked H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E in Baltimore n played like it. This kid isnt ready thid year. We are also without Aldon Smith for a minimum of 8 games , possibly more, all were waiting on is for the league office to make it official which will happen this week. Justin Smith is turning 35 n could fall off a cliff n e time, his play declined significantly last season via PFF.

We also have holes on the OL. I dont trust the new center & for good reasom he didnt look good. RG Joe Looney was absolutely pathetic n was blown off the ball by the Ravens backups. Boone needs to come back because Looney isnt even backup quality n will get Kap Killed. The 49ers just have so many questions n holes I dont see a good season in store. Mark my words either AZ or SEA will win the West .

Ian Williams was the starter in font of Dorsey before he got hurt. Granted, Dorsey played very well as his replacement, but Williams had outplayed him in camp last year. If he returns to form, our d line will again be the best in the NFL.
Losing Whitner isn’t all that bad either. He was a great run stopper but a liability in coverage. Bethea is a solid replacement.
Borland is not Bowman’s replacement. Wilhoite will get those duties and should play just as well as he did last year when he took over Willis’ spot.

I can go on and on…

Basically, you don’t know what you’re talking about. The 49ers have the squad to win it all.
