Gronk far from a sure thing to play Week One

Gronkowski AP

From time to time throughout the offseason, reports have emerged that Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski will be ready to go (or words to that effect) on Week One after suffering a torn ACL late in the 2013 regular season.  Given his slow return from a broken arm last season, that seemed overly optimistic.

Gronkowski’s fairly slow start to camp has made it seem like much less than a sure thing.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Gronkowski’s anticipated Week One availability sits at 50-50, with perhaps a shade above the even-money proposition.  It’s not a surprise; given the many surgeries and complications Gronkowski has endured in the past two years, there’s no reason to be reckless with his health.

Last year, he missed several weeks at the outset of the season due to concerns regarding whether his twice-broken and later infected arm was ready to be exposed to the physical stresses of full-contact football.  This year, it’s an ACL recovery.  If Gronkowski was careful with his arm, he’s definitely going to be careful with an area of the body that has a far more direct impact on his ability to move quickly on a football field.

    Glass-kowski.

  2. jdog5428 says: Aug 12, 2014 7:21 PM

But one thing is for sure, he’ll get injured again and then get caught on camera dancing like a drunk frat boy with his shirt off.

  3. floratiotime says: Aug 12, 2014 7:23 PM

But if you say he has injury issues you’re a hater.

  4. valentino8100 says: Aug 12, 2014 7:28 PM

The Patriots will make the playoffs with or without Gronkowski. Without him in the post-season, they will struggle to put up enough points to for Championship run regardless of how improved their defense is. Fingers crossed in New England.

  5. nflgreedleague says: Aug 12, 2014 7:29 PM

The Patriots should have done a better job finding another play maker at the TE position.

  6. raymondtx says: Aug 12, 2014 7:30 PM

He should be ready to be back on injured reserve by week one.

  7. antispy3 says: Aug 12, 2014 7:34 PM

Gronk came into the league with back concerns. . .he had back surgery as a collegian. . .

So, only black or white; no in between? Like the large contingent of NFL teams that weren’t interested in Gronk for that very reason. . .some medical experts projected his career lasting four seasons. . .

Tell me a bad back, twice broken arm & ACL AREN’T injury issues? How many games did he miss over that span? As a result how adversely effected was his play?

  8. crawfish2011 says: Aug 12, 2014 7:41 PM

Games missed over the last 2 seasons. Gronkowski – 16, Jimmy Graham 1
In order to be the beat you gotta be on the field not in the training room. Gronk had a spark when he started but now he’s just garbage.

  9. i, flounder says: Aug 12, 2014 7:44 PM

at least they still have hernandez.

  10. uglydingo says: Aug 12, 2014 7:52 PM

If Gronk isn’t 100%, he shouldn’t be rushed back.
Patriots are a 12 – 4 team at worst in the weakest division, so certain to make the playoffs.
Brady and Belichick are elite and make other players better. The addition of Revis is big for the Defense. So why rush Gronk back?
This year is about winning another Super Bowl.

  11. i thumbs down your comment says: Aug 12, 2014 7:53 PM

I’ll take Vernon over Gronk from franchise perspective. Gronk just misses too many games.

1 game, both healthy? Take Gronk.

  12. biggs13 says: Aug 12, 2014 7:55 PM

Tom Brady is the Patriots. The franchise is doomed when he retires in two years.

  13. Getoffmylawn! says: Aug 12, 2014 7:55 PM

I bet the Seahawks could have him up and ahead of schedule. Then he would just miss 4 games for PEDS, but he would be on the field.

All you Pats haters are just jealous that we have the best TE in the game. Keep hating – we laugh as we march our way to another title.

Tom Brady is the Patriots. The franchise is doomed when he retires in two years.

Then how do you explain the Patriots having the best record in the NFL regular season and post season since 1994 not 2001?

    Just another uniformed hater.

    It’s all about ownership.

  19. gayforbrady says: Aug 12, 2014 8:13 PM

44 touchdowns in is very short an abbreviated career we will still take it.

even with his injuries he still a top 5 tight end on or off the bench

  20. 3yardsndust says: Aug 12, 2014 8:16 PM

“All you Pats haters are just jealous that we have the best TE in the game.”

That would be Jimmy Graham in New Orleans. Dude gets it done week in and week out.

  21. Steeler Nation is so far above you and your lowly franchise. We built this league. Pittsburgh's three rivers are made from the tears of our opponents. Bow to your supreme overlords. says: Aug 12, 2014 8:18 PM

I don’t know if he’s injury prone or not. All I know is I would hate to see the dude who could take that kind of hit from TJ Ward that Gronk did and NOT sustain an injury. That dude would be like a real life Wolverine.

LOL at pats fans… all about ownership.. Pats have worst ownership in league… Pats are a low class “we were duped” org protected by Goodell… pats are ALL Brady…

LOL at this Pats are successful crap.. they are a nice little AFC team that has won nothing in well over a decade since being caught cheating… and I personally don’t credit them the prior SBs due to cheating… Pats are very lucky to be in the AFC East and AFC….

  31. basexc9 says: Aug 12, 2014 8:50 PM

Pats lost to the Fins in Miami last year with Gronkowski and should have lost to them in New England too

  34. politicallyincorrect says: Aug 12, 2014 9:13 PM

I doubt Gronk would have made it to the league w/o roids… now body is breaking down… I just hope he does not get paid.. would not want a guy like this to succeed

  35. patriotinvasion says: Aug 12, 2014 9:18 PM

Not concerned about September. Just as long as he’s there for then AFCCG and Super Bowl. If he was healthy in 2011, 2012, or 2013 we win at least 1 Super Bowl.

  36. scw1993 says: Aug 12, 2014 9:46 PM

When fans of losing, lesser teams who have never won anything, stop their snarky comments about NE…that’s the only time I’ll worry.

  37. somethinghappeninghere says: Aug 12, 2014 9:58 PM

BS, BB! All you are doing is playing mind games on the Dolphins! Of course Gronk is gonna play week 1! You can’t beat the Dolphins without him! (Not with crappy LBs like Wheeler anyway… I want Tripp! I want Tripp!)

  38. catquick says: Aug 12, 2014 9:59 PM

I’m much too young to feel this damn old-Garth Brooks Gronkowski.

  39. annes22 says: Aug 12, 2014 10:03 PM

We would like Gronk not to show up. If he does he will probably break something, or be carted off. He’s a disaster waiting to happen again.

  40. jchipwood says: Aug 12, 2014 10:14 PM

I remember last time the pats played the dolphins and gronk didnt play. A “top 5 qb ever” choked and cost them the game.

  41. pats777 says: Aug 12, 2014 10:20 PM

Jimmy Graham has also disappeared in a lot games due to good D or phantom injuries. Don’t be missing that fact haters.

  42. VenerableAxiom says: Aug 12, 2014 11:46 PM

Sounds like even if he gets on the field for the first game, he’s probably not going to be 100%.

  43. securb2013 says: Aug 13, 2014 12:03 AM

Gronk will be a Raider next year book it.

  44. faepernick says: Aug 13, 2014 12:26 AM

The NFL is a better product with the best players on the field. Wishing Gronk and all the other injured players out there a speedy recovery, even if I despise your team. Looking at you Seattle.

  45. 941bucs says: Aug 13, 2014 12:28 AM

I think you’re right. They drafted a QB and RB in the third and fourth rounds. Those picks weren’t with this year in mind and they’ll probably pay off down the road, but it’s going to hurt not having a tight end to make catches if/when Gronk can’t go.

For that matter, their first round pick probably wasn’t with this year in mind. Gotta give Bill credit for keeping the future strong.

  47. kissbillsrings says: Aug 13, 2014 7:07 AM

GRONK will still be the 2nd TE drafted in fantasy leagues this year…
He’s a stud that EVERY true fan of the game wishes was on their team….

  48. marcuswelby1 says: Aug 13, 2014 7:49 AM

I have said all along that Gronk won’t be on the field until week 3/4.

  49. getitrightflorio says: Aug 13, 2014 8:52 AM

Dolphins will hand the Pats and 0-1 start to the season, no doubt.

  50. peytonalwayschokes says: Aug 13, 2014 9:21 AM

Jimmy Graham is SO soft, he might be the softest player in football actually. Don’t even mention these 2 players in the same breath. Nice games against the Pats (Talib) and Seahawks (the Legion) in the playoffs, combining for 1 catch for 8 yards in 2 games against good competition.

Go run up some more fantasy points catching jump balls against crappy defenses, Jimmy.

  51. daddeeo says: Aug 13, 2014 9:53 AM

Why play him? Leave him out until the 5th week. Give him as much chance as possible to be alive in the playoffs!

U actually can’t. U have to be on the field more than 6 to 8 games a season to be talked about.
