Kyle McCarthy, a safety who took a job as a graduate assistant at Notre Dame this year after spending the last four years in the NFL, has announced that he has cancer.

The 27-year-old McCarthy, who played for the Broncos and also had brief stints with the Chiefs and Raiders, revealed his diagnosis on Twitter today.

“A few weeks ago I was diagnosed with a very treatable form of cancer,” McCarthy said. “Yesterday, I began chemotherapy as the next step in eliminating this disease. I’m truly blessed to have such amazing love and support from family and friends. Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers over the last few weeks. I expect a full recovery and look forward to returning to the team during and after
my treatment. Go Irish!”

Said Notre Dame’s football program in a statement, “We continue to be amazed by former captain Kyle McCarthy’s fortitude as he continues to help the team while battling cancer.”
